Brown-winged Kingfisher, Pekaka Bakau Emas, Pelargopsis amauroptera
Brown-winged Kingfisher can found in Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. In Malaysia, the bird can only be found on the island on Langkawi. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical mangrove forests. This is a lowland bird and also a mangrove bird. The bird can usually be spotted on exposed twigs in mangrove area to make its call, where the loud call can be heard over longer distances. Not a shy bird but for sure it is limited in numbers, so it hard to find.

If any one bird embodies the character, mood and spirit of raw Africa, it has to be the Fish Eagle.

A recent trip to a dry lake bed to search for a Great thick-knee was not successful, however while walking around, I was harassed by this black-winged stilt that thought I got a little too close for its comfort to its young. I took advantage of the situation and managed to find the right moment where the birds was flying directly at me for a click!
The Great Gray Owl has an average wingspan of about 5 feet. I was lucky to see this fella flying towards me with the wings stretched out in flight (otherwise referred to as “on the wing”).
A male Green Winged Teal cruises the shore - I was lucky to get this somewhat shy duck - but wanted o get the nearby Female - but sometimes we take what we can get!
Up until this month, I have been pretty much winging it with my bird photography. I was doing okay with the birds if they kept still. Then I watched a couple of videos of Simon Paul D’entremont’s bird photography on You Tube. I wanted to be able to capture birds in flight with better details and I needed more tips on how to do that. His tutorials are excellent. So now I am practicing with my limited gear. I won’t be investing in a new lens just for birding. I simply want to make the most of the lenses and camera I already have. This Egret is one of my practice shots. I do prefer having habitat included with the birds which is particularly challenging when they are flying!
One of 11 warbler species in the yard/pond today. Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, Sept 15, 2021.
A rare one for the yard and always nice to see.
We had The golden-winged, Tennessee, Magnolia, Cape May, Blackburnian, pine, Palm, Bay Breasted, Blackpoll, Black and White, and American Redstart. A bumper crop.
Vermivora chrysoptera
Golden-winged parents may use trickery to protect their young from predators. Adults feeding nestlings have been observed repeatedly carrying food down other plant stems away from the nest, possibly as a decoy, when they detected humans nearby.

A small duck of the marsh, Blue-winged Teals can be found feeding amongst the cattails and sedges along with Mallards and other dabbling waterfowl.
They get their name from the brilliant band of blue feathers under the wings which is normally only seen in flight.

Black-winged Stilt has a wide distribution including Africa. Asia, and Europe, and we saw many of them on our Thailand birding trip. However, perhaps because of their very abundance and the ‘distraction’ of other more unusual species, I didn’t do much photography of these birds. They are an elegant combination of black-and-white, with the addition of long pink legs — which this image at least hints at…
A rare bird because of decline in its habitat, they are beautiful. This one was singing on fresh maple growth. Oh and I love the colors of the young fresh maple.
While at the Werribee Open Range Zoo with Lance www.flickr.com/photos/lankee2009 and his wife (from New Zealand) we spotted two Brolgas in the 'back paddock' of the Zoo. I was wondering if it is the same two we saw at the WTP last week.
Happy Wing Wednesday!

Tu seras toujours dans mon coeur Claudette.
In the spring and throughout early summer, the air is filled with the calls of the red winged blackbirds which, by end of summer, have faded away. And so I was tuned in when this pair of blackbirds called out to each other on the last day of September. A pair coming through on their way south somewhere....
