I've been setting up my "new-to-me" Dell Inspiron 11z laptop. I love it! I installed Rainmeter on top of it to make these cool overlays. I have about 30 wallpapers that I have shuffling every few minutes. This machine is very nice!

It's currently not finished. One of the Rainmeter skins still has a few kinks to work out. Mainly a typo and resolution issues. As well as the day of the week problem, the author says he hadn't accounted for the longer names.

Dull, dull, dull. Today was prepping stuff for the Sixth Form exam results tomorrow, and this evening has been all about rebuilding my machine.

Just before we went to Finland I ordered a new hard drive and a copy of Windows 7. I can't believe that having been forced to use Windows to stay compatible with work I've actually been running Vista for 18 months. It's such a crock.

Anyway, tonight was about getting stuck into a rebuild. I could have migrated my installation to the new drive and then updated it, but that in itself would have been an opportunity lost. Mozbackup was my friend, and the important stuff moved quickly. It still means that I've lost out on a good night's spodding though!

Hopefully I'll see this finished by the weekend. :)

The little triangles that Windows 7 forces to use to expand a folder are an abomination. It used to be possible to just click on the icon for the folder to expand it, but now we are forced to click on the miniscule little triangle, that glows a smug shade of greeny-blue, if we want to expand the folder in the right hand window.

I've successfully installed Windows 7 on this 6-years-old Acer TravelMate 234FX laptop, Celeron 2 GHz, RAM 384 MB. The Intel 82845G VGA card driver is for Window XP, but it works fine in Windows 7. Other drivers were installed automatically via Windows Update.

Testing Turbo Boost feature of the 2.93GHz Mac Pro Nehalem with CPU-Z in Windows 7. Was easily getting a sustained 3.19GHz while encoding with HandBrake (60% core saturation). Will try to see in what situations it boosts to 3.33GHz. Anyone know of a similar software in Mac OS X?

So - MS hopes netbook users will upgrade from XP to Win7. But you can't do an in-place upgrade from XP to Win7; if you want to preserve your files & settings you need to use Easy Transfer. But Easy Transfer won't run on a resolution < 800x600. Many netbooks do not meet this - for example my HP Mini is 1024x576.

Conclusion: Win7 Netbook fail.

Suggestion: MS update EasyTransfer so it does not require 800x600 to function - it will not even execute. Let us netbook users live with a compromised interface but don't fail entirely.

Here's the bug report I'm going to file on Connect, but MS wants me to use the Feedback tool from the machine having the problem, so I'm going to write it up here until the Win7 upgrade finishes....

See www.flickr.com/photos/76217291@N00/3492360092/

Repro: take a netbook running Windows XP. (In my case, a HP Mini 2140 with 1024x576 display.) Attempt to upgrade to Windows 7 RC1. Launch install. Attempt in-place upgrade.

Expected(but not the bug I'm reporting here): in-place upgrade from XP to Win7 works. (Yes, I know that's not a supported scenario. But it's still a big gap for Win7. Sure the folks who've upgraded to Vista will upgrade to Win7, but the folks who've stayed on XP will want to upgrade too.)

Actual (but not the bug i'm reporting here): Dialog appears ; in-place upgrade not supported for XP to Win7. Dialog explains that to preserve settings & files, need to run Windows Easy Transfer.

Repro (now we get to the bug I'm reporting) download, install and run Windows Easy Transfer for XP.

Expected: Easy Transfer launches, collects data and packages it up, then says "done" and I'm ready to upgrade to Win7 with my data ready to bring over to my future Win7 user profile.

Actual:

1. Easy Transfer installs, but does not automatically launch or even offer to launch when installation is complete. Should at least offer to launch when installation is complete.

2. - (this is the key issue that this feedback item is about!) When Easy Transfer launches, it refuses to run on the Netbook display of 1024x576 because it does not meet minimum resolution requirement of 800x600. Easy Transfer should allow execution with part of the UI cut off, or adjust size so it fits on a typical Netbook display. Refusing to execute at all is not good - netbook users will follow all the instructions, and end up at a dead end. Better to have a compromised UX than none at all. Best to fix the UI constraints for XP Easy Transfer so it can be run on netbooks.

FIX IS HERE.

Do not bother reading this unless you too have the Invalid Numeric Entry problem. I expect sufferers to come to this page via a search engine.

Plagued by this error box.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 -- Invalid numeric entry. A number between 0·07% and 3200·00% is required. Closest value inserted.

Unable to work out why it was happening. Every operation in Photoshop CS3 was peppered with this box to the extent that I was clicking 'OK' six times for every action that should have been completed with one click or key press.

The program had been working well for years. Went down the wrong route in suspecting the cause to be a Windows 7 automatic update. In a way I was right. It was Windows but something that I had done and not an update. [KEEP READING TO THE END. THE ANSWER IS NOT THAT WHICH THE NEXT SENTENCE MAY LEAD YOU TO EXPECT.] Did a bit of research and found the cure was to install Microsoft’s AppLocale Utility and set it to Ελληνικά (Greek). This bit of software facilitates the use of multiple alphabets and conventions. It is mainly used when software is produced for one region and language and is used on a computer with different settings. I realised where I had gone wrong.

It all started back in the 1960s with Tom Langley my maths teacher at Prenton Secondary. He was insistent that the decimal point was not a full stop but what would be described in Unicode as 00B7 (alt+0183) or middle dot that sits higher than the full stop. In my wisdom I had entered Control Panel>Region and Language>Additional settings…>Numbers and changed the decimal symbol to ‘middle dot’. Put it back to full stop – problem gone. Reset it to middle dot – problem returned.

If you suffer from the problem try restoring the system default settings for your country or using the US or UK settings.

Curiously, the author of the error box went to the trouble of using the middle dot as the decimal point.

Please leave a comment below. It is just nice to know that the words were useful. Thanks.
