I'm sure that Keith will be shocked and stunned to learn that I've upgraded my operating system in work. I've jumped from XP to Windows 7, and I was pretty much forced by XP's reluctance to address my RAM and make the most of the multi core CPU.
The installation wasn't too bad, but I did have some nervous moments wading through all the pointless glass and aero effects. I needn't have worried. With an hour or two of carefully directed industry and a dedicated mind you can make Windows 7 look just like Windows 98!

Now that Windows 7 is really close to coming out, I've decided to give it another shake, just to be fair. My main curiosity is how some of my favorite Mac apps will fair against equivalent Windows apps. Of course, I really doubt that there will be an equivalent for Final Cut Pro or Keynote or Garageband or even something basic like iChat, but there is at least one App that has an obvious Windows equivalent this time around and that's Handbrake, my DVD ripping favorite.
In fact, the people who make Handbrake, have released a Windows version. Of course, the last time I checked, there was no GUI version and it didn't convert commercial grade DVDs, no doubt due to the DRM in Windows. So I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they had a GUI version and quickly downloaded to give it a try.
As a film buff, Handbrake is really important to me. Before switching to Mac, I used a piece of shareware crap call Magic DVD and it only encoded to AVI, which is, despite it's popularity, an outdated-no-longer-supported format. Handbrake outputs using the H.264 codec.
So I've tried Handbrake with three different movies, at least two of which I've ripped on my Mac without a problem. Every time I tried to choose a DVD source on the Windows version of Handbrake, I got an error message like the one shown above. It reads:
"No Title(s) found. Please make sure you have selected a valid, non-copy protected source. Your source may be copy protected, badly mastered or a format which..." blah, blah, blah...
Looks like the Windows DRM is still in place. Strike one for Windows 7. More comparisons to come.

i used the windows 7 wallpaper which i find really funny and psychedelic and stuff. i used geek tool to pretty much do everything else. the fonts i downloaded from dafonts.com. i think it's a nice way to put it together given the variety colors in the background.
Attention span for Win7 ran out for awhile, but will try Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC).
Driver nightmare and I don't want to mess my machine up by swapping hardware, but it was a fun two days learning 2/13/09

ps - the problem was no driver for SiS 900 Network adaptor on ASUS motherboard. No network= no internet= no fun.

On 2/16/09, I had some extra time, installed a wireless card to get internet going, also AVG free, it works.

Here's my workspace. I'm a college student still living at home and I needed a nice place to do my work when I'm not in class. The dual monitors allow me to view four documents at a time, or more recently a Virtual Machine on one, my lab document and my lab report on the other.
I have a set of rope lights giving me some ambient light behind the monitors. Both monitors are mounted to the wall with swivel / tilt mounts. I can rotate them 180 degrees vertically or horizontally independently of each other. I can also bring them as far forward as I want or push them up against the wall for maxim desktop room. I installed an outlet behind the monitors and run 1.5ft power cords to keep the wires hidden. The DVI cables are routed though the wall down to my town under the desk.
