Charm on Judson Street, Philadelphia

Philadelphia City Hall, August 6, 10:48 a.m.

This photo was taken from the east side of Philadelphia City Hall. It's an old building, so they apparently had to use window air-conditioners.

A weathered red brick building features a rusted metal door, with two bricked-up windows and an air-conditioning unit on its wall. Near the building's corner, there is an overgrown patch of grass, and in the background, a blue pickup truck is parked alongside urban structures.

Write me a song called "The Building is from 1959." No don't.

The teal panels and the pale green glazed bricks and the rounded corners of selected windows are attractive even yet. The awful plastic films on the windows are very unattractive, really really bad-looking.

The venetian blinds and vents and air conditioner are neither attractive nor unattractive.

This residential building is one a row of three closely-spaced, detached brick houses with Gothic details on Claflin Avenue, between Eames Place and W. 195th Street in the Bronx, New York City.

Based on a brief item in the NY Times, dated 24 October 1925, it appears this group of houses was designed by Horace Ginsberg (who later changed his name to Ginsbern), a prominent Bronx architect. The text in the paper: "Claflin Avenue, west side, 79.04 feet north of Eames Place - Three 2-story brick dwellings, 30 x 54.4 feet. Keliman & Rosen, owners. Horace Ginsbeg, architect. $25,000"

Ginsberg/Ginsbern is better known for his work designing apartment houses, including the Art Deco style Park Plaza apartments on Jerome Avenue, which is a NYC Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the "Fish Building," on the Grand Concourse.

Claflin Avenue takes its name from the Claflin Estate, a large property in the northern Bronx which was one of the last large properties sold when it was subdivided and put up for auction in 1919 as the area urbanized with the extension of subway lines providing service to Manhattan. H.B. (Horace Brigham) Claflin was a "merchant prince of New York" and when his former estate was put up for sale, an ad for the auction, alluding to his mercantile background, stated that "Real Estate is Merchandise." July 1, 2017 - We are now heading to dinner on a busy night in Hong Kong. Today is the 20th anniversary that Hong Kong was returned to Mainland China and after dinner we walked through Temple Street known for shopping followed by a ride on the subway since our bus was stuck in traffic. We then met up with our bus and drove up Victoria Peak to watch the celebratory fireworks display.

"If it weren't from 1946 I wouldn't care about this building at all!" I exclaimed as I took pictures.

During fallout emergencies will the freemasons be required to refrain from inflicting their creepy rituals onto the gathered shelterees. Ha ha the "raining missile" graphics on fallout shelter signs look like Trivial Pursuit gamepieces don't they.

I am architecturally sad to have the full expression of the fascinating grid of ornamental Xs be interrupted by a bulky and cumbersome air conditioner but I can understand that people would want to try to be cool in summer.

The signs "Del-Rich Co." and "Neat Stuff" would have us think that there are two businesses here, but no it's a single pawnshop named "Del-Rich Loan & Neat Stuff Antiques." Each pawned antique you buy will come with an implied sad story of the poverty and desperation for which the U.S. is renowned.

Is the inside comfortable?, but it's definitely neat to look at from out here. Pieces of woodland seem to "butt" against its backside, and I can see where siding was applied to a first-floor door there on the corner. People don't look like they lack for tv channels. That's a whole lotta balcony to have to safely support.
