This morning I traveled to my workshop in the fog. I went down a road I hadn't been on before, and on my way home I was surprised to see these wind turbines so close to the road. I hadn't even known they were there.

Contractors are hoisted aloft to check the power head atop the 120-foot mast of the wind turbine during final assembly March 13, 2013, at Black Butte Lake, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District park near Orland, Calif. Expected to go online within 30 days, the turbine can generate 11 kilowatts of energy and will help supply the needs of campers in the park. (U.S. Army photo by Robert Kidd/Released)

Wattle Point wind farm on Yorke Peninsula. A road that runs north of the Troubridge hill lighthouse provides this view from slightly higher ground than most of the area. The sheep and ruin were conveniently placed.

Aside from being ideal conditions for windsurfing … what do wind, waves, and sun all have in common? They are all sources of renewable energy and each will be showcased at OMSI in a new permanent, bilingual exhibit officially opening January 17, 2013. Renewable Energy/ Energía Renovable invites OMSI visitors to learn about emerging sources of energy as well as consider the tradeoffs involved in using any energy source. Interactive exhibit pieces demonstrate how alternative technologies can be integrated into the existing power grid and how visitors’ individual energy choices affect the environment.

What's not to like? Summerside PEI offers a 5 cent per kilowatt hour discount to residents who get involved with their Heat for Less Now program. The furnaces and hot water heaters store energy and help the utility use more cheap wind energy. In return Summerside gives the discount. The creative program has netted 99% customer satisfaction. You might be wondering why these turbines are all pointing in different directions.

There are fifteen in this group, by the A30, not far from Truro ( a couple are out of shot). There was a nice steady moderate breeze. Of the fifteen, six were turning.

I am unconvinced of the worth of these things, hugely expensive and unreliable, they contribute a tiny percentage of our power needs. Cornwall in particular is blighted by hundreds of them.

With 44.947 MW, Germany has the most wind power capacity [32%] installed in Europe and was the leader in new installations [47%] 2015. Last year 26.772 wind turbines on-and offshore generated 13.3% of the electricity in the country. Wind made the largest contribution to generating electricity from renewable energy sources with 86 terawatt hours total and it is also the largest employer among the renewables with 149.200 jobs. In a worldwide comparison, Germany comes in third with 10% of the installed capacity, right behind China [34%] and the United States [17%]. strom-report.de/.2v5

This reconstruction of Robertson's windmill in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, uses wind power to grind grains. The entire structure turns on the vertical post seen at the bottom of the enclosed area. The covers of the windmill's blades that catch the wind are not in place in this photo. Unlike the modern windmills cropping up in many places, this eliminates the "middleman", directly providing power to perform the work to be done.

Since the first of the week (it's now Friday night), I've been unable to access pull-down menus in Flickr, making it impossible to conveniently check recent activity on my photos, to organize sets, send Flickr mail (except a reply to a message in my box), and so forth. I've also been unable to add or modify picture titles and captions, so I have added no photos until now. It turns out the problem is with Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which I finally discovered when I looked closely at the error message produced in trying to access a menu. I'm working at the moment on my MacBook Pro using Apple's Safari, and everything works as it should -- I'll be making comments this weekend. I really do have to go ahead and buy the iMac and complete my changeover, so even the desktop computer is not dependent on Bill Gates. [PS - Full use of Flickr finally returned -- mysteriously -- to the PC on Sunday, 1/17]

Portable, environmentally friendly solar and windpower generator, powering NASA's exhibit tent on the Mall for Earth Day. Pretty good idea to combine the two, because chances are either there will be some sun, or wind, or hopefully both, at any given moment.
