Wimbledon Common is a large open space in Wimbledon, southwest London.

The Common is home to The Wombles, a series of characters created by Elizabeth Beresford.

The windmill stands near the centre of Wimbledon Common as usually understood; in fact the unmarked parish boundary with Putney Common runs right past it.

The Windmill has stood pride of place on Wimbledon Common since it was built in 1817 by Charles March to serve the local community. Its hollow construction mirrored that popular in Holland, rather than the traditional British structure, but it’s unknown why Charles March chose to build it this way. The grain-grinding, working mill only operated for almost half a century when, in 1864, the machinery was removed and replaced by residential accommodation. As well as its day-to-day role, the Windmill was also interestingly the vantage point of choice for watching the many duels that took place on Wimbledon Common and Putney Heath back in the 19th century.

Whilst the inner workings of the mill are no longer in place, the sails have been restored to working order and the residential accommodation converted into the much-loved museum, housing interactive exhibits on rural life and local history.

Can you spot any Wombles? There is certainly no rubbish here.

Three officials captured at the Wimbledon Championships, London UK for the theme "odd one out". The silhouettes caught my eye and I managed to capture the trio before the moment was lost.

A nice spot for a stroll on a Saturday afternoon. The skies might have been totally grey, but in the thick of the woods in Wimbledon, green was the colour of the day. And silver, on the silver birch trees ...

A very clean loco and stock get the green light at Wimbledon for Waterloo. Unfortunately though - not a breath of steam! 15th September 1963.

15/06/22 Wimbledon: South Western Railway Class 455 5734 & 5859 working 2J18 08:40 Raynes Park - London Waterloo. The train should have started from Hampton Court but a points failure on the branch was affecting morning services.

My first long distance outing for 3 months was to the SWR suburban network to photograph the Class 455's and 458's prior to their withdrawal. The Class 458's will return as 4 car units for the Portsmouth Direct line and will no doubt be repainted.

The day started well but went down hill thanks to cancellations ruining my planned shot at Chiswick and a line block on the Down Fast between Clapham Junction and Barnes scuppering my preferred shot of the Class 69 hauled gypsum at Barnes. I'd wanted to look across from the Down Slow platform and photograph it on the Fast. The line block was removed just in time but it was too late and I'd opted for a record shot elsewhere. Still, I managed to get some good unit shots on the whole and they'll be uploaded over the coming days.

Near the end of their time on the southern region two class 508s wait at Wimbledon. I think this was taken from the carpark of a B & Q. 508036 nearest the camera.

15/06/22 Wimbledon: South Western Railway Class 455 5861 & 5731 head along the Up Fast working 2F96 08:17 Woking - London Waterloo. Not many Class 455 workings get free reign on the fast lines but this working runs non-stop from Surbition to London Waterloo, crossing to the fasts at Berrylands.
