Ancient Greek plate with a painted boar - isn't he just wonderful? (he is probably not meant to be the domesticated kind, but a wild boar, which were popular to hunt)

Pottery dating to the first quarter of the 6th century B.C., from the Doric region of Greece, probably Rhodes (where it was found).

Bonne journée.

Wildschwein - Wild boar

Finally, I made a postcard about the castle !!

Grimmenstein Castle above the Pitten valley on the Kulmriegel in Lower Austria is a hillside castle. It was left to fall into disrepair and has only been renovated since the 1960s. Since the last decade, it has been inhabited again by the new owner and can be visited.

Cofrentes is a village 104 km from Valencia. The town is located at the confluence of the rivers Júcar and Cabriel. The economy is based on agriculture and livestock. Crops are cereals wheat, barley and maize, wine and olive trees. The economic activity of this town also revolves around its nuclear power plant. The Cofrentes nuclear power station covers practically the entire domestic consumption of the Valencian Community. There are many water sources in the area. The most important is the Los Hervideros well. Cofrentes has the only river route in the Valencian Province with a journey of 14 km one way and the same amount back, through the Canyons of Júcar in a modern boat of the same name. This boat is accessible all year round. Today, thousands of visitors enjoy the native flora and fauna, who can observe mountain goats, mouflons, wild boars or ospreys in the spectacularly beautiful cliffs that can be seen from the boat. Castillo de Cofrentes sits high above the river on a volcanic rock with a volcano on the other side of the river. Its origin is Islamic, at the time it served as a castle-fortress, so inaccessible height of 95 meters on which it stands, and palace-residence between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The castle of Cofrentes is a fortress built at 394 meters above sea level, the highest part of the capital of the municipality of the same name. It is built in basalt rock of volcanic origin, on one of the chimneys of the volcano Cerro de Agrás. Ceramic remains from the Roman, Iberian and Bronze Ages have been discovered on the site of the castle. the castle was declared a property of cultural interest. Photo taken at Puente de Hierro de Cofrentes, a bridge over the Cabriel river with a sublime style, overlooking Castillo de Cofrentes.

The wild boar Richard came into the secretary's household and family many, many years ago. Already some time ago the simple "Richard" of the early years became a respectable "Sir Richard". He carries the burden but also the privileges of old age with dignity and knows how to be regaled with his favourite dishes.

... for a HMBT!

Parque natural Sierra de Andujar (Andalucia) Spain

Here is another one of the wild boars I met earlier in January, an adult female. I took quite a lot of photos of them and may post some more occasionally. They look so cute and nice and it's hard to imagine how nasty and even outright dangerous they can be.

A quiet morning meeting.

:-)

Here is another one of the wild boars I met in January. This is obviously a young one. They were not really tiny anymore but still considerably smaller than the adults and of a lighter colour.

a shoat / wildboar piglet / Frischling / Wildschwein /Schwarzwild (Sus scrofa) sleeps 10042023

I hasten to add that she was on the other side of a fence, like the rest of the wild boar gang. Without the fence I would probably have stayed as far away from them as possible as they are not as nice as they look.

... for the weekend -TGIF!

Bolton Castle, nestled in the stunning Wensleydale region of North Yorkshire, is one of England’s best-preserved medieval castles. Built in the late 14th century by Sir Richard le Scrope, it has a rich history, including serving as a prison for Mary Queen of Scots in 1568. The castle offers a fascinating glimpse into medieval life, with intact rooms such as the Old Kitchens, Dungeon, Solar, Nursery, Armory, and Great Chamber. Visitors can explore its atmospheric halls, enjoy falconry displays, and even try their hand at archery.

One of the more unique attractions at Bolton Castle is its wild boar enclosure. Wild boars were once native to Britain but became extinct in the wild centuries ago. However, Bolton Castle has reintroduced them, and visitors can see these fascinating animals up close. The castle recently welcomed a new litter of wild boar piglets, adding to the charm of the experience. There’s even a scheduled wild boar feeding time at 16:00, where guests can observe them in action.

If you visit, be sure to check out the castle gardens, which have been restored along medieval lines, featuring a herb garden, rose garden, walled vineyard, and maze. The tea room, located in the atmospheric Guest Hall, serves homemade meals, including boar pie, which is a nod to the castle’s historical connection with these animals.
