The pretty Eco Pond there in the Everglades. A three image stitch to get the wide view ... captured with the CPL filter.

Like the tropical clouds hanging over the scene.

Having visited the area this morning and noted the extent of the engineering works west of the Dore West Curve, another visit was planned. Surprisingly on a day of rail strikes threes freights were booked through in a 20 minute period, helped by a late running Toton to Dowlow and early running Dewsbury to Earles.

Taken remotely, this little guy was inquisitive of the strange object showing his reflection...

Here is an example for the first weeks lesson assignment. This is a wide angle landscape image from Great Falls National Park in Virginia.

I shot this with a D300 (aps crop sensor) and used a 12-24mm wide angle lens. Notice the sweeping perspective created by using this lens at its widest setting.

In order for these wide angle landscape to work well, you need to get in close to your foreground. For this image I choose the rock as a great foreground and positioned the lens within 2 feet of it. This creates what is known as a near/far composition. This image works well also because of the dramatic clouds at sunset. If the sky would have been clear, this image would not be nearly as strong and I would have need to consider shooting a completely different composition with much less sky in the shot.

- www.kevin-palmer.com - Before leaving this spot I switched lenses to get a wider view of the supercell.

This was taken this week whilst we were away. Tixall Wide, as it is known, is one of our favourite stopovers on the canal. It is very wide at that point and appears much more like a lake than part of the canal. Favourite for people watching swans and Canada geese nesting in the reeds. A very peaceful and picturesque spot.

Tixall Gatehouse: the medieval mansion was demolished, but the Gatehouse still stands

Tixall Gatehouse is a 16th-century gatehouse situated at Tixall, near Stafford, Staffordshire and is all that remains of Tixall Hall which was demolished in 1927. The gatehouse is a Grade I listed building. Tixall was used as a prison for Mary, Queen of Scots for two weeks in 1586.

This poster appeared at various places around the EMR network, with this one being on the exterior wall at Derby station. EMR’s bizarre purple mascot, Miles, has bagged himself a ride on a rather *WIDE* ALX400 in London!

I think it’s weird the illustrator went to the effort of doing a recognisable type of real life bus, but made the proportions so wacky and did a half-job on the side. Still it’s nice to see. And Miles has his lesser spotted female companion with him, who I don’t know her name so I’ll call her Kilometres.

There’s a couple of video adverts EMR have made with the “EPIC” branding; one where Miles is doing a virtual assault course to read his emails, and another where he has to fight off animated enemies in the form of London landmarks. The latter one is pretty cool but they play it too often, so it has become quite annoying. I wish they’d made a series of them so we could see Miles getting up to different stuff each time – perhaps one for each major city on the Midland Main Line.

Sadly we don’t get an animated open top ALX400 in the advert, but there is a taxi. One thing I particularly like on the bus drawn here is that it a grey rectangle on the front that makes me think they had a reference image of an ALX with a school bus sign folded up, and they drew it on in grey. It also has one of the latches (sideways) for the centre front panel, and at least on the front is remarkably accurate.

Of course the real question I bet everyone's dying to know is... what kind of ALX400 is it? Well obviously it’s out of proportion and not meant to be anything in particular, but I reckon it best matches an early DLA class DB250, because:

- The lower deck side window pattern is correct (save for missing the final small window)

- The destination glass has sharp radius corners (which only the early bodies had)

- It’s centre staircase (Miles has rows of seats behind him)

- No nearside grille (so not a Trident)

- It’s full height (again confirms not an S-BWC to T-KPU)

- The glazing looks bonded but the viewing angle is so narrow it could still be gasket, or have painted pillars

The only annoying thing is it looks like, after making it so accurate, they then incorrectly drew the offside tyre visible underneath, but we can just claim it’s just something hanging down behind the bumper to satisfy that faux pas.

A wide-angle image deforms the subject matter slightly but otherwise it is impossible to get all the colours of the Bahamas into a single shot. Once the Cygnus spacecraft leaves it won't photobomb the shots anymore.
