I spent about 12 hours on the road, in total, going to two different locations on the Quirinthe peninsula with three different drivers. The drivers varied in their willingness to stop for pictures, unfortunately. Some of the time I was forced to take very "quick" pictures. I did see a good deal of the countryside and the very primitive living conditions of the Macua people.

Homes are mud huts with thatched roofs. Usually there is no electricity and certainly no running water. Merely existing takes up a good deal of the day. The roads were remarkably good, but I saw few vehicles. The locals see very few travellers so to the children of the area I was their mystery for the day.

Happy Wing Wednesday!

We just had to take a gondola ride, no matter that it was quite expensive. We got to see a very different side to the city by doing so.

Elephants may spread their ears when they are excited, surprised or alarmed and try to make themselves look bigger. They may also spread their ears to cool off by aerating the blood vessels in the ears which circulates cooler blood throughout the body.

This elephant cow was accompanied by her calf. It was so small it practically disappeared in the tall grass - maybe that's why she was vigilant.

I've been having fun with the panoramic shots lately. This one is a six shot capture of the Big Quilcene river.

Kohleria eriantha - red trumpet - after rain.

Kohleria is in the Gesneriaceae family. The most well-known members of this family are African violets. However, Kohleria is a genus from the New World. Kohleria plants are generally tropical herbs or subshrubs with velvety stems and foliage. Red trumpets are native to Colombia.

The drops of water are at the tips of fine hairs on the flower.

As promised, here is the color version of this Red Admiral butterfly, which I posted in black and white yesterday.

Do you have a favorite between the two images?

They really are beautiful and showy butterflies and I'm blessed to have had so many on our flowers this summer!
