I've thought a lot lately about the difference between taking pictures... and making pictures.
Many of my Flickr friends... like Art of Gold and WhyNot Studios... truly make pictures. They use photographic images... and other things... to make, to create something totally new. Out of Tune does a lot of picture making, too... in a somewhat different way... placing herself in disconcerting circumstances... using her limbs and face and hair and personality to create an entirely new perspective on some domestic, industrial or institutional scene. And I really admire that.
This pic was, of course, taken. As in... stolen. As in... we were at a park, and there was a wedding starting up... and I was struck by the contrast in this scene. There was no time... no opportunity to try to get the light right, or even the framing. We were walking one way, they were walking the other way... and, as always, I was leery about pointing my camera at strangers in public.
Stealing from nature is easier. Go to the forest. Wait for the moon. Time the exposure to capture the movement of clouds, of branches, of wind, of insects. No one hassles you. No one claims you're robbing them of anything. But... as the person behind the camera... you know you're some kind of thief.
Making pictures, for me, is easier psychologically. Use yourself... or something of yours... as a primary subject. Use your own surroundings... your home, your office, your back yard. Things that are undeniably yours. (The picture-making done by my aforementioned Flickr friends is much more sophisticated, much more pleasing to the eye... and I wonder if they feel the same type of "ownership" and freedom when they make these images.)
Bah. I have no idea what I'm babbling about today. Just that I kind of like this picture... and kind of don't... for various reasons.
I like the relative irony of the tattooed, all-in-black bridesmaid dragging on her smoke with one hand as she holds up the so-white traditional dress with the other. But I hate that distracting patch of greenery in the middle. And yeah... I'm uncomfortable with the "snapping strangers and putting them on display for my own amusement" factor.
I'm not shooting much right now... just posting stuff I took on vacation.
But I think... when I have the time and get back to serious shooting... I would like to focus more on making, rather than taking.

Now I've just got to get Panther Burn, Hot Coffee, etc. etc. etc.!
Ten things I've never done before today:
1. Made a double pie crust from scratch.
2. Ate/Made a Peach pie. Had to after this.
3. Tasted my own homemade vanilla ice cream.
4. Skype'd with my sister & mother.
5. Felt the world shrink just a bit.
6. Heard my youngest son say, "We're just two friends shopping today" during our solo grocery trip.
7. Dealt with an over-tired kid & didn't have a crib to toss him into.
8. Packed a book bag not for myself.
9. Realized that tomorrow I will have to visit two different places to scoop up my children.
10. Used shortening for the first time.
That's enough new things for me. I'm exhausted.
