IN EXPLORE 30/05/2022 NEWCASTLE SUNSET CO DOWN WALK ABOUT ON 29-05-2022...............The name of the town is thought to derive from the castle built by Felix Magennis of the Magennis clan in 1588, which stood at the mouth of the Shimna River. This castle was demolished in 1830.[4][5] The town is referred to as New Castle in the Annals of the Four Masters in 1433, so it is likely that he built on the site of an existing structure.[6][7][8]

The Montgomery Manuscripts record that Newcastle was besieged and later captured by Sir James Montgomery of the Ards in April 1642 in the aftermath of the 1641 Rebellion (pp. 128–134). Prior to 1641 the Castle belonged to the Magennis', but after the rebellion the property was confiscated and granted to Robert Hawkins, great grandfather to Robert Hawkins who assumed the surname of Magill. The date 1588 was inscribed on a stone placed over the front entrance of the Castle, built by Felix Magenis. Newcastle passed from the Magills to the Mathews, and subsequently to the Annesleys. In the late 1700s the Castle was modernised by the Matthews and then the Annesleys, and rented by the Board of Customs for the accommodation of revenue officers. Around 1830 the castle was demolished and the 'Annesley Arms Hotel' was constructed within the original castle compound. The 3rd Earl Annesley built a new 'marine residence', called 'Donard Lodge' on the lower mountain slope above the town (it was demolished in 1966). St. John's Church was also opened on 'The Rock' in 1832 to accommodate the visitors and growing population in Earl Annesley's developing seaside resort.

The Newcastle fishing disaster occurred on 13 January 1843 when boats from Newcastle and Annalong set out for the usual fishing stations, and were caught in a gale. 14 boats were lost in the heavy seas including a boat which had gone to the rescue. Only two boats survived, the Victoria and the Brothers.[9] 73 men perished, 46 of whom were from Newcastle. They left twenty-seven widows, one hundred and eighteen children, and twenty-one dependents. A Public Subscription was raised and the cottages, known as Widows Row, were built for the widows and dependents.[10][11] A local song about the disaster says "Newcastle town is one long street entirely stripped of men"[12]

In 1910 Harry Ferguson flew a small plane across Newcastle beach in one of the first engine powered flights by aircraft in Ireland. He completed the flight in an attempt to win a £100 prize offered by the town for the first powered flight along the strand. His first take off ended badly, but according to a modern newspaper report 'He flew a distance of almost three miles along the foreshore at a low altitude varying between fifty and five hundred feet'. This event is recorded by a plaque on the promenade.

Stony Point Nature Reserve conservation

This unique mainland seabird breeding colony is the home to three endangered seabird species and one rarity, all of whom are visible from the reserve’s elevated viewing boardwalk.

The iconic black and white African penguin is the focus of conservation efforts. Our hardy endemic arrived from declining off-shore island colonies to this rocky mainland location in 1982 and has thrived ever since to currently support the largest penguin colony in the Western Cape with over 2 000 seasoned breeding pairs (data correct as of 2014).

The uniformed black Bank cormorant pairs, with courting white rumps, predominate at the rocky outcrops of Beacon Bay in Stony Point. The clumsy Cape cormorant roosting numbers are increasing at this location due to their symbiotic foraging relationship they share with the deep diving penguin and other neighborly marine predators. Finally, our rarity at this unique location is the Crowned cormorant whose pairing numbers are also increasing. They too brood alongside the Bank cormorant and also predominate the rocky out crops of Beacon Bay. Their tea-pot form, crest of plumage and ruby colored eye amongst the black and turquoise of the larger Bank cormorant

Another shot from Wedge Pond but after the sun had risen. The Autumn colors were vivid and the reflections, playful. Fortunately the clouds played their part as well saving me from a bland blue sky. As well, another photographer (whom I later met) sets up on the far side of the Pond.

There is a song in Ireland that speaks about the forty shades of green and spring is the most opportune time to see all of the shades of green. This image shows up a beautiful shade of green namely lime green. Don't you just love green my fellow photographers. I know that you do because I have been enjoying your wonderful images. Dedicated to Aiden our little star whom we lost in a fire.

The title is a quote from John Donne, who died in 1631.

For 30 years I have been playing "Doppelkopf" with friends, a card game with 40 cards that is usually played by four people. Who plays with whom is regulated in each new game, two Re / two Contra partners. The players who have the cross ladies in their hand form the re team, the other two players are contra. Fixed rules, as with skat, there is the double head not. The game is said to have evolved from the card game "Schafskopf", game rules / explanations are available at Wikipedia. We have created our own rule according to which we play.

We started with four women, one friend, she was / is not working, was traveling frequently and we could not play, then we were five, the same dilemma. There were also appointments with five women, today we are six women and the problem has not been solved, the world is luring and so much is still traveling.

From the beginning money was played, base price 5,00 DM / 5,00 € each point 0,5 penny / cent, the money is paid into a cash register, brought to the bank and once a year we travel together for a weekend, so we were in Copenhagen, Prague, Barcelona, Poland and many cities and coasts in the Federal Republic. Concerts / Balettaufführungen are on our program, once a year we go together with our men in the Advent season in a restaurant for Advent dinner.. It is still difficult to arrange common appointments. I wish you a wonderful week, dear friends. Thanks for your visit, comment and Fave <3 <3 <3

Cancale

is a commune in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in Brittany in northwestern France.

Cancale lies along the coast to the east of Saint-Malo.

It is a picturesque fishing port popular with visitors, many of whom are drawn by its reputation as the "oyster capital" of Brittany.

Though a small town, it is well served by a large number of restaurants, many specialising in seafood.

When not eating one can sit and watch the bustle of this busy little town with many stalls selling crustaceans of all types.

Hinulugang Taktak, the waterfall in Antipolo, Rizal province is so named - according to local folklore - because the townsfolk back in t he 1500s where so irritated with the ringing sound of a church bell that they seized the latter and threw it down the falls into the river.

The Parthenon (/ˈpɑːrθəˌnɒn, -nən/; Ancient Greek: Παρθενών; Greek: Παρθενώνας, Parthenónas) is a former temple, on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron. Construction began in 447 BC when the Athenian Empire was at the peak of its power. It was completed in 438 BC although decoration of the building continued until 432 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered the zenith of the Doric order. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece, Athenian democracy and Western civilization, and one of the world's greatest cultural monuments. To the Athenians who built it, the Parthenon and other Periclean monuments of the Acropolis, were seen fundamentally as a celebration of Hellenic victory over the Persian invaders and as a thanksgiving to the gods for that victory. The Greek Ministry of Culture is currently carrying out a program of selective restoration and reconstruction to ensure the stability of the partially ruined structure. MM contribution 18/3/19, theme something to do with the first letter of my surname!!

Well this does indeed begin with the first letter of my surname. It then goes on to use the second, third and fourth letters of my surname in order. Then it stops.

Some flash usage here again but not interesting as it was all trial and error!!

Spangles44’the cheerful photographer’ whom many of us have known for a long time, has left us the morning of April 25, for a better place where there is no pain.

She loved Siesta Key, FL., the birds, water and beaches..

When I joined FLICKR almost ten years ago as a new photographer she was one of my first friends; encouraging, enjoying her own camera experience and living a full life through her family & friends, painting, traveling, squash, etc.. She was a true leader on FLICKR, always wanting the best to happen on the site and in her groups.

Do check out her stream...Spangles44 The cheerful photographer!!!!!

As Lins would say, “I’m off to catch up with everyone!”

I am a better person for having known This cheerful photographer and will greatly miss her....Pat...xo

Nothing is more practical than finding God, than falling in Love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, whom you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in Love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.

-Fr Pedro Arrupe (1907–91):

George M. Allison, architect.

Architect George M. Allison, about whom little is known, designed several costly dwellings on Delaware Avenue in the 1860s and 1870s. Only the Sternberg house remains.

Charles F. Sternberg

Sternberg owned a grain elevator on Ohio Street. Unfortunately, he died before the mansion was finished.

The house contains more than 20,000 square feet, has 18-foot ceilings, and has 200 windows, including several 12-foot tall bay windows which flood the interior with light. According to Tim Tielman, director of the Preservation Coalition, "This would not have been unusual for house in the Second Empire style at that time on a large American lot. Like the Gothic, the fenestration helped to emphasize the verticality of the style." 255

If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee." Mum was sat opposite watching them and watching the area. She seemed to be ok with us being a distance away and not making noise.

I think the most heartbreaking aspect of this lovely Cheetah mother's story is that she used to have four cubs, so it's understandable that she was so watchful. We were so privileged that she allowed us to hang out for the time she gave us. Cheetah are vulnerable to poaching and of course habitat loss... but these cubs are vulnerable until they get a lot bigger.... to Lions, Leopards and Hyena, all of whom are in the reserve. I hope they make it.
