Taking a glimpse at 'who-eats-whom' in the natural world.
Warning: I know some may not be too keen in looking at predation images. Mother nature is not always pretty. Part of me is always rooting for the prey, but the predator needs to eat too. It must kill prey in order to eat and survive. As difficult as it might be to see, it is all a part of the natural food chain.
Merlins, whose close cousins are the famed peregrine falcons, are primarily hunters of small birds, and there are plenty of small birds in the park.
This individual, presumably perched at the edge of the woodland earlier, had suddenly sallied out on an aerial pursuit when it spotted a flock of Waxwings flying across the terrain. By the time my friend Ivan and I located this illustrious predator, it had already ripped into the unfortunate prey.

*The Northern Pike, which itself is a fearsome nasty predatory fish, is preyed upon by the Great Blue Heron and Osprey.

A predator* became the prey.
A Northern Pike caught its last glimpse of daylight before being swallowed whole. As difficult as it might be to see, I realized it was all a part of the natural food chain. All living creatures need to hunt and eat in order to survive.
*The Northern Pike is a carnivorous predatory fish. It eats fish, frogs, insects and even small mammals. It'll hunt and eat another pike if hungry. When I was living up north in the Canadian Northwest Territories years ago. I'd witnessed these notoriously nasty pikes catching and eating small ducklings.

I just loved that bell and the watchman, who seemed to be in deep thought looking, as I leant over the low boat side rails to get a good reasonable capture from some distance, and with the boat going up and down a bit, due to the river water getting a bit rough at this point. I said thanks to my brother Lee, who realized what I was trying to do, and he started supporting me by holding onto my back teeshirt and the next passenger to my side: " Are you ok and alright?
I said Yes, He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother!
This is one of my favourite captures of that day, and I am well pleased with my editing and processing on this one!

Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866), whom I've often mentioned in these pages, in Japan had a versatile assistant from 1825, Heinrich Bürger (or: Burger) (1804-1868). Bürger had studied mathematics and anatomy at the university in Göttingen, Germany, and then followed a course in pharmacy at Batavia (now Jakarta), Indonesia. He ran Siebold's pharmacy just off Dejima Island (Nagasaki) and in 1828 became Siebold's successor. Apparently they got along fine, and Siebold named our shrub for Bürger as Buergeria stellata in 1846. That name caused confusion and was incorrect: Buergeria became Magnolia.
In the Hortus it's in full Spring flower now, well before the Magnolia grandiflora whose green leaves form a backdrop against the Cumulus Laden blue sky in this photo.

Elephants are among the most intelligent of the creatures with whom we share the planet, with complex consciousnesses that are capable of strong emotions. Across Africa they have inspired respect from the people that share the landscape with them, giving them a strong cultural significance. As icons of the continent elephants are tourism magnets, attracting funding that helps protect wilderness areas. They are also keystone species, playing an important role in maintaining the biodiversity of the ecosystems in which they live.
During the dry season, elephants use their tusks to dig for water. This not only allows the elephants to survive in dry environments and when droughts strike, but also provides water for other animals that share harsh habitats.
When forest elephants eat, they create gaps in the vegetation. These gaps allow new plants to grow and create pathways for other smaller animals to use. They are also one of the major ways in which trees disperse their seeds; some species rely entirely upon elephants for seed dispersal.
On the savannahs, elephants feeding on tree sprouts and shrubs help to keep the plains open and able to support the plains game that inhabit these ecosystems.
Wherever they live, elephants leave dung that is full of seeds from the many plants they eat. When this dung is deposited the seeds are sown and grow into new grasses, bushes and trees, boosting the health of the savannah ecosystem.
Sidenote: (This kind of digital art is certainly not one of my strengths, I don't use photoshop so cutting out the model to place into a background wasn't as easy as I thought. I still have much to learn with this but felt proud enough with what I had achieved to publish this with regards to the subject. Elephants face so many more threats than loss of habitat, as do many more wild life species.)

Never let it be said that there is no controlling in the home office. One of my two cats is often visiting me, laying herself behind me on the sofa and watching if I do everything right. I didn't find out yet to whom she is reporting, I think to my wife.

In 1937 Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the civil war there for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from "the good fight," For Whom the Bell Tolls. The story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain, it tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. In his portrayal of Jordan's love for the beautiful Maria and his superb account of El Sordo's last stand, in his brilliant travesty of La Pasionaria and his unwillingness to believe in blind faith, Hemingway surpasses his achievement in The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms to create a work at once rare and beautiful, strong and brutal, compassionate, moving and wise. The Goldfinches were out in numbers when I went for my walk yesterday. At one point I counted 15 juveniles, some of whom are possibly offspring of this one, lined up on a fence.

Out at Cobbledicks Ford for our monthly planting, weeding etc day today. It was lovely to see this busy Kingfisher catching lunch. We think they have young in a nest. Unfortunately due to the arrival of thunderstorms I didn't have time to climb the escarpment to see where we think the nest is. We saw this one catch 4 lizards.

IN EXPLORE 30/05/2022 NEWCASTLE SUNSET CO DOWN WALK ABOUT ON 29-05-2022...............The name of the town is thought to derive from the castle built by Felix Magennis of the Magennis clan in 1588, which stood at the mouth of the Shimna River. This castle was demolished in 1830.[4][5] The town is referred to as New Castle in the Annals of the Four Masters in 1433, so it is likely that he built on the site of an existing structure.[6][7][8]
The Montgomery Manuscripts record that Newcastle was besieged and later captured by Sir James Montgomery of the Ards in April 1642 in the aftermath of the 1641 Rebellion (pp. 128–134). Prior to 1641 the Castle belonged to the Magennis', but after the rebellion the property was confiscated and granted to Robert Hawkins, great grandfather to Robert Hawkins who assumed the surname of Magill. The date 1588 was inscribed on a stone placed over the front entrance of the Castle, built by Felix Magenis. Newcastle passed from the Magills to the Mathews, and subsequently to the Annesleys. In the late 1700s the Castle was modernised by the Matthews and then the Annesleys, and rented by the Board of Customs for the accommodation of revenue officers. Around 1830 the castle was demolished and the 'Annesley Arms Hotel' was constructed within the original castle compound. The 3rd Earl Annesley built a new 'marine residence', called 'Donard Lodge' on the lower mountain slope above the town (it was demolished in 1966). St. John's Church was also opened on 'The Rock' in 1832 to accommodate the visitors and growing population in Earl Annesley's developing seaside resort.
The Newcastle fishing disaster occurred on 13 January 1843 when boats from Newcastle and Annalong set out for the usual fishing stations, and were caught in a gale. 14 boats were lost in the heavy seas including a boat which had gone to the rescue. Only two boats survived, the Victoria and the Brothers.[9] 73 men perished, 46 of whom were from Newcastle. They left twenty-seven widows, one hundred and eighteen children, and twenty-one dependents. A Public Subscription was raised and the cottages, known as Widows Row, were built for the widows and dependents.[10][11] A local song about the disaster says "Newcastle town is one long street entirely stripped of men"[12]
In 1910 Harry Ferguson flew a small plane across Newcastle beach in one of the first engine powered flights by aircraft in Ireland. He completed the flight in an attempt to win a £100 prize offered by the town for the first powered flight along the strand. His first take off ended badly, but according to a modern newspaper report 'He flew a distance of almost three miles along the foreshore at a low altitude varying between fifty and five hundred feet'. This event is recorded by a plaque on the promenade.

Jungle Jim's International Market, formerly Jungle Jim's Farmer's Market, is a large supermarket in Fairfield, Ohio, with a satellite location in Union Township, Clermont County, both near Cincinnati. The main location has been described as a theme park of food. Founded in 1971 by "Jungle" Jim Bonaminio, the store started as a small produce stand, and has grown to over 180,000 items, about 60,000 of which are international items, and over 300,000 square feet (6½ acres or 26,000 square meters) of floorspace.
