Been a while since I've got a whole clear night to do some shooting. Got skunked last weekend up in the mountains, cloudy all weekend at night, so I spent yesterday watching the IR satellites trying to decide whether or not risking another trip up there. Wasn't looking good with the monsoonal moisture we've been getting every day here in Utah so instead I decided to make the quick trip out to Delle and shoot the infamous bus. Moon was just about set so I decided to get snapping so I could get the Rho Ophiuchi Complex still in the sky, it's getting later in the year now and there's limited time before that region sets below the horizon. Used some small puck lights to illuminate the interior of the bus and my red headlamp to light myself up. Exterior lighting is caused by the truck stop that's a few hundred yards away.

6 shots for this image, 4 for the sky, 2 for the foreground, all shot consecutively with no gaps in time/tripod location. Shot with a Nikon D800E on a Sky Watcher Star Adventurer tracking mount, sky shots are 2 minute exposures at ISO 800 and f2.8, foreground shots are 2 minute exposures at ISO 400 and f2.8. No stacking done, just stitching to create a wider field of view.

I blew up a suitcase.

But that's probably not enough info.

Briefly - Tannerite is a legal binary explosive used in reactive targets for long-range shooters. When its two components are mixed, it is still stable, only detonating if struck by an object moving at 2,000fps or faster.

The charge in this video is a half-pound, the standard-sized charge. I had shot at over a dozen Tannerite targets prior to this shot, and while the explosions were loud, they weren't all that impressive. So when my neighbor gave me an old suitcase he was throwing out and I got the brilliant idea to put a Tannerite charge in there, I thought that, at best, it would simply tear a big ragged hole in the suitcase or something.

Had I actually taken a physics course in college, I probably would have had a better understanding about explosions and the expansion of gases and such. Hell - I even got CLOSER because I didn't think it'd be that bad. As you can see, this went way beyond a ragged hole in the suitcase - the whole damned thing blowed up, smacking me and my friend Jose with debris.

This was actually incredibly stupid and not something I'd repeat - at least not at such close range. We really could have gotten hurt.

That said - it's still funny as hell and I can't stop laughing about it.

Our second trip in 2023 wasn't very long. Just a day trip to a wildlife refuge about an hour and half from our home.

Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge is well known as a stopover for migrating Snow Geese. It's common for over 1 million geese to hang out for a few days at the refuge during their migration to their nesting grounds in far northern Canada.

The official count five days after our visit was over 400,000. The official count. The official count the week before was 1.3 million. So my best scientific estimate for a count on the day we were there is somewhere between 400,000 and 1.3 million. That qualifies as a whole lotta geese.

My Take on the Game Character Pinocchio from Lies of P

The whole idea was from The Pinocchio skin made by the talented Miu Littlepaws. maker of Utopia skins. From there was quite the hunt for all the things used to make Pinocchio come to life. I hope I did the Character proud.My hope is Walton Wainwright someday might make a tailcoat either mod so can remove a sleeve or one where they are removable so I might show off his Prosthetic Arm in full which does show on Pinocchio game character. Shot @ The Looking-Glass sim , perfect backdrop for this shoot. Im glad I got him done as starting tomorrow , Im on deck to begin shooting Fantasy Faire as I have for many years and again am honored to do it again this year. Look forward to seeing you all when the mists part.

It rained the whole weekend, and now the forests are full of these.

Something that caught my eye on returning from hospital a few days ago triggered my photo brain to want to come back and see if there was a image to be had.

Subject: It's All About The Natural Light

This fun technique creates some amazing abstracts. I fill a flat glass dish with whole milk, add a few drops of food color then add a bit of Gain dishwashing soap on a Q-tip swab and the colors explode. Once the food color stops moving, I use a toothpick to gently swirl the colors. This was photographed using natural light from a north facing window.
