North American Beaver

I'd been watching this beaver for about 15 minutes as s/he repeatedly fetched sticks and took them back to the same spot to eat. Uncharacteristically, the beaver eventually looked up and sniffed the air ... my clue that something was different. I looked behind me to see someone else quietly approaching, although still at quite a distance. The beaver knew the other person was there long before I did. :o)

The beaver resumed eating as we two humans quietly watched from a distance.

The Burrowing owls are back and this was the first day they were seen since their return

Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) flight_w_9066

The common cuckoo is a member of the cuckoo order of birds, Cuculiformes, which includes the roadrunners, the anis and the coucals.. This species is a widespread summer migrant to Europe and Asia, and winters in Africa. It is a brood parasite, which means it lays eggs in the nests of other bird species, particularly of dunnocks, meadow pipits, and reed warblers.

With the more popular signals 2 miles north at South Holly, the 53 signals less than a 2 mile drive away were also equally cool, and harder to shoot. With trees on both sides and shadows always finding a way to creep in, getting a train timed right was tough. We got lucky with a late 127 when Lake State still ran it without CSX power, but the photo has its obvious blemish: a ginger Jeep parked in the worst possible spot. Oh well, can't redo this shot now since these signals, like South Holly, were replaced a few months ago.

Oft I sing for my friends

When death's cold hand I see

When I reach my journey's end

Who will sing one song for me

I wonder who

Will sing for me

When I'm called to cross that silent sea

Who will sing for me

When friends shall gather round

And look down on me

Will they turn and walk away

Or will they sing one song for me

So I'll sing 'til the end

Contented I will be

Assured that some friends

Will sing one song for me.
