Whitby Yacht Club, pano view from the marina across the harbour

Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England, split by the River Esk. On the East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea, the ruined Gothic Whitby Abbey was Bram Stoker’s inspiration for “Dracula”. Nearby is the Church of St. Mary, reached by 199 steps. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, in the house where Cook once lived, displays paintings and maps. West of town is West Cliff Beach, lined with beach huts. ― Google

Whitby Abbey was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey church was situated overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby in North Yorkshire, England, a centre of the medieval Northumbrian kingdom. The abbey and its possessions were confiscated by the crown under Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries between 1536 and 1545.

Since that time, the ruins of the abbey have continued to be used by sailors as a landmark at the headland. Since the 20th century, the substantial ruins of the church have been declared a Grade I Listed building and are in the care of English Heritage.

The abbey is perhaps best known as the inspiration for Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. The author stayed in Whitby in the summer of 1890 and, although he was to spend six more years on his novel before it was published, researching the landscapes and customs of Transylvania, the name of his villain and some of the novel's most dramatic scenes were inspired by his holiday in Whitby. The innocent tourists, the picturesque harbour, the abbey ruins, the windswept churchyard and the salty tales he heard from Whitby seafarers all became ingredients in the novel.

Finally after many years of visiting the Yorkshire town of Whitby I managed a trip up the 199 steps to the Abbey, all other times I have visited it has been closed, more research should of been done I think, but I got the shot I have wanting to get for such a long time this weekend.

We were revisiting the coastal town of Whitby and finally decided to actually climb the 199 steps to St Mary’s Church and Whitby Abbey having not had the time to do so on several previous occasions!

Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula featured Count Dracula as a creature resembling a large dog which came ashore at the headland and runs up the 199 steps to the graveyard of St Mary's Church in the shadow of the Whitby Abbey ruins. There is a legend that a white lady is seen in one of the windows.

Taken just before Halloween having walked up from the town to get the sunset view. I often think that a good sunset shot needs a good silhouette and the Abbey certainly provides that. A wonderful town to visit with so many interesting shops, bars, cafes and the brewery opposite the Abbey is worth a visit as well.

...and if you turn around from the previous view you come to the Abbey....

Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England overlooking the North Sea. It is one of the most beautiful and popular harbor towns in England. Although it was basically a cloudless sky on the day I took this picture, I was still very pleased with the composition. It's definitely a "bucket list" location for photographers.
