Briarlake Forest Park

DeKalb County (Amberwood), Georgia, USA.

2 May 2018.

****************

▶ "Briarlake Forest Park is located in Districts 1 and 2 of central DeKalb County. This rare urban forest consists of an old home site and 21 acres of land, much of it old growth forest, that was originally part of a 100 acre land lot. The Creek Indians inhabited this area of DeKalb County until they were forcibly removed in the early 1820s. The land in this area was then divided into land lots that were either awarded by a lottery or later sold. According to local resident Grace Gresham Flowers, in 1850, the first home was built on the current home site that is now part of Briarlake Forest Park.

In the 20th century and for nearly 100 years, only two families had ownership of the property – the Gresham family and later the Cathey family. According to Grace Gresham Flowers’ memoirs, her grandparents, John and Alma Gresham purchased the 100 acre land lot #192 in 1918, and settled on the property that is now part of Briarlake Forest Park. The Gresham’s subsequently sold the property to Charles Cathey Sr. and his wife Lenora in 1949. In July 2015, DeKalb County purchased the property, which consists of three separate parcels, as greenspace in July of 2015.

While portions of the park have been impacted over the years by human and natural activities, a great deal of the land and trees have remained fairly undisturbed. This is evidenced by some of the older specimen trees, most notably the 250 year old white oak that stands majestically next to the old yellow house and the great beech trees at the corner of Amberwood Drive and Briarlake Road. The site also shows evidence of its agrarian history. There are still remnants of terracing from when the land was farmed on both the south side of the 15.5 acre parcel where it borders the backyards of houses along Blackwood Road and on the 3.3 acre eastern parcel that abuts Silverpine Trail.

The Friends of Briarlake Forest Park wish to express our gratitude to Kimberly Ellis, UGA Heritage Preservation graduate student, and Grace Gresham Flowers, historical archivist and former resident of the park property, for their work in collecting, archiving, and bringing Briarlake Forests Park's fascinating history to life."

Mini Challenge #4 We visited this place during our holiday. Where is it? (A clue - it is a place in the answer to the main challenge). Extra points if you can tell me how old the big tree is, and where it is from / what it is called.

This charming town is my photo, but I have no idea where it was taken. I had it in a folder called, "Work on These". Not enough info, and probably taken off an old hard drive. Anyway, it does look charming and may be Italy or France. but could be anywhere in the World.

Weeds grow from the turret of the 'Pabst Castle.'

▶ In the early 20th-century, this building was the site of the Pabst Brewing Company's bottling operations in Baltimore, Maryland. A century later, in 2012, the now-vacant building was under consideration as a new 'craft' brewery. The brewery's plans have since been changed to open in a larger building, a few blocks away. But the landlord of the Pabst Castle has continued to spruce up its exterior, making the building's provenance more obvious.

▶ More photos: here.

***************

▶ And, by the way...

Since 1996, the Pabst Brewing Company has been a brewery in name only, owning no physical brewing plants. In fact, since 2001, all of Pabst's beers sold in the U.S have been 'contract-brewed' by SABMiller...including current 'hipster' fave Pabst Blue Ribbon.

The Waffle House Museum ...

Avondale Estates, Georgia.

*****************

"Joe Rogers Sr., the restaurateur who founded 24-hour diner chain Waffle House with his partner Tom Forkner, died on Friday [3 March 2017]. He was 97. As a young man, Rogers worked as a short-order cook and manager at the now-defunct Toddle House chain. He opened the first Waffle House with his neighbor Forkner in Avondale Estates, Georgia, in 1955. Rogers and Forkner decided to call it Waffle House because waffles were the most profitable items on the menu.

The duo expanded slowly, opening just a few more locations during the restaurant’s first decade in business. But growth accelerated in the ’70s and ’80s and now the chain has more than 1,900 outposts, most of which are located in the South. Even though he was the co-founder, Rogers liked to hop behind the counter from time to time. In 2004, the restaurateur told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “I’m not an executive, I’m a waffle cook.” Rogers pulled himself out of day-to-day operations of the chain decades ago, but he was still active at the company’s headquarters into his mid-80s."

▶ "The original building, in what is now Reston, Virginia, was constructed circa 1892 under the guidance of Dr. C.A. Max Wiehle, a physician from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who tried to establish a town and farming community known as Wiehle on 3,228 acres of land he purchased in 1882. The first floor served as the Wiehle town hall, and the second floor housed the Wiehle Methodist Episcopal church.

Abram Smith Bowman bought the building in 1927 as part of a 4,000-acre parcel called Sunset Hills, in what is now, Reston, Virginia.

Bowman opened his eponymous distillery in 1934 on the day after Prohibition was repealed, and the building originally served as the warehouse of the distillery. The first bourbon produced by the distillery was shipped from the warehouse in 1937. Between 1934 and some point in the 1950s, Bowman's was the only legal whiskey distillery in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The primary brands were Virginia Gentleman and Fairfax County bourbon whiskeys."

▶ "Grant Park, Atlanta's first city-owned public park, now houses Zoo Atlanta, [formerly] the Cyclorama, and a residential area. The park was named after Lemuel P. Grant, who donated the land to Atlanta in 1883. Grant was a railroad engineer, who designed the fortifications for Atlanta during the Civil War, and, later, a successful Atlanta businessman. Grant Park, now 131.5 acres, has an average of two million visitors each year.

A zoo (later Atlanta Zoo) was added to Grant Park in 1889. The animals were a gift of Atlanta lumber dealer George V. Gress, who had purchased a defunct circus for the wagons and railroad cars and offered the animals to form Atlanta's first municipal zoo. With the addition of the zoo, the city desired more land. The park was extended to 131.5 acres on April 4, 1890, when the city purchased 44 more acres from Lemuel Grant to the north of the original tract."

▶ "Kirkwood Urban Forest and Community Garden is a seven and one-half acre plot, previously an illegal concrete scrap dump, purchased by the City of Atlanta in 2005 through the Georgia Greenspace Program and a Georgia Forestry Commission program.

Classified as a conservation park, 'managed for environmental protection, but open for public access,' the preserve was created in 2010 by neighborhood volunteers and is supported by the local neighborhood organization with additional grants.

Now, the urban forest features trails among mixed hardwood trees, spring-fed Hardee Creek, a butterfly meadow of native Georgia grasses, a fruit and nut orchard, a pond, a community garden, and a covered pavilion."
