The charming St. Charles, IL rests on the Fox River and usually presents opportunities for interesting photos. Many old homes in small towns along the river have been turned into little shops or cafes. This shop is run by a semi-retired couple who run an antique business for fun.

This past weekend was just another reminder how brutal the conditions can be on Clingman's Dome in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I woke up at around 5:00 AM to make it to the parking lot here from Smokemont Campground, on the NC side of the park. Upon arriving at the Clingman's Dome parking lot, I was greeted by massive gusts of wind (I was occasionally afraid of getting blown over...), bitterly cold temperatures, and thick layers of fog. I walked to the end of the parking lot, trying to find some large trees to dominate the foreground of any shot that might materialize through the fog. Shortly before the sun broke over the horizon, the fog began breaking up into large sheets rolling over the mountain. The conditions when this occurs are incredibly dynamic - it seems like every picture taken from the same spot has an entirely different character.
If you look at the EXIF info, you'll see that I'm using a Canon 16 - 35 f/4.0L IS USM lens rather than my normal 17 - 40. Unfortunately, this is because two weekends ago a large gust of wind on Black Balsam Knob blew over my tripod, ruining the lens. The filter pushed into the barrel, skewing the protective plastic element surrounding the front element. Broken glass from the filter got inside the body. Canon initially quoted me $190 to fix the lens, but then revised their estimate to $535. So, I rented the 16 - 35 because I wasn't willing to miss out on the fall leaves! This upcoming weekend, it's unfortunately back to the t2i and the 10 - 22mm lens - can't afford a new lens for the 6D or another rental!

As the weekend approaches, Gusi and I wish y'all a happy weekend.
I will spend my weekend loving on my kiddos and hugging them even more than usual.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by this horrific tragedy in Boston.
*Big hugs*
....not really. But we had a great time in London in the past weekend. This is just the window of Byron, at Soho. I loved the happy vibe of the bokeh background and it was a fun start to the trip.
