WEEK 29 – Columbus Kmart Closing, Set 4
We’re briefly diverting our attention away from that right actionway and into one of the middle cut-through actionways, this one separating the home departments (on the right) from the pantry department (on the left). If you would, I’ll ask you to please pay particular attention to that Coke endcap on the left. You’ll see that the top of it has a repeating image, featuring a stylized Coke background, the Coca-Cola logo, and the word “Real.”
Besides the fact that, well, the fixture itself seems dated in its own right, and the Coke background does as well… that word “Real” most certainly serves to date this fixture back to the first decade of this millennium, as the “Coca-Cola… Real” slogan debuted in 2003, according both to the company's own webpage and this nifty article.
Having read that article, it would seem that this endcap is perhaps even cooler than I first thought, for it sounds like that 2003 packaging redesign not only brought us the “Real” slogan but also the reintroduction of the famous Coke ribbon – described by Coke’s marketing representative as “the dynamic ribbon device, or what people call the wave” – after what amounts to approximately an eight-to-ten year absence, if this graphic is to be believed. The ribbon’s return in turn jettisoned the pop top design, “the graphic of the glass bottle with the product and cap splashing out of it,” aka this (not-so-great) look.
The reinstated ribbon was to appear as multiple ribbons, “intertwined,” and “modified with a thread of bright yellow.” Obviously, that would later be ditched in favor of the simpler, classic, iconic single white ribbon on solid red background… but, for the time being, this gave us a unique, very-2000s design. Pretty cool stuff indeed!
