This is spider webbing strung between old seed whorls of native Black Sage (Salvia mellifera, Lamiaceae) in the woods today. I believe this is the work of a Mesh Web Weaver spider in the family Dictynidae. The webbing joins the seed whorls like rigging on a dusty ship model. Happy Web Webnesday! Webbing for Diaper bags. Towel to make bibs and washcloths. Yes, I know the yarn is RH, but I'm not a yarn snob. I love to use natural fibers, but they aren't necessarily the best for charity knitting for Africa!
I trapped this spider in an upturned glass. It's body is less than 1 mm accross. You can clearly see the 8 eyes. The legs are so thin that they were hard to see with the naked eye.
Taken with a Canon EOS30D, MPE65mm, 4 x magnification, ex550 flash with diffuser, remote trigger and tripod. 1/250 exposure, ISO 250. Raw.

Salma pyrastis. When I first stumbled across this large (approx. 45mm) caterpillar I was impressed by its size, vibrant colour and markings. Easy to photograph I thought, but not so. Not only did the wind blow its twiggy home around wildly but the caterpillar seemed to detect my presence from about a metre away and immediately retreated to the safety of its silken shelter. Shortly after its retreat it routinely turned around to face head down, not to emerge until hours later, if at all. My almost daily visits over a 10-day period resulted in just one occasion when I came across the caterpillar fully emerged. I eventually found the silken shelter empty and no sign of the caterpillar in the foliage. I assume that its bright colours and daytime feeding mean that it is unpalatable to birds, so it may have left its feeding to pupate elsewhere on the Eucalypt.

Ok, so see that webbing there? Looks like the lock has not seen a key in a good while. Yet the sign towards the street says that they have mass twice on Sundays. All the doors were locked, as was the wanamaker tower, and the parish house and rectory across the street. I'm fairly confused as there was some controversy here and I'm not sure if they really do have mass or not.
