The Queluz National Palace (Portuguese: Palácio Nacional de Queluz) is a Portuguese 18th-century palace located at Queluz, a freguesia of the modern-day Sintra Municipality, in the Lisbon District. One of the last great Rococo buildings to be designed in Europe, the palace was conceived as a summer retreat for Dom Pedro of Braganza, later to become husband and then king consort to his own niece, Queen Maria I. It served as a discreet place of incarceration for Queen Maria as her descent into madness continued in the years following Dom Pedro's death in 1786. Following the destruction by fire of the Ajuda Palace in 1794, Queluz Palace became the official residence of the Portuguese prince regent, John VI, and his family and remained so until the Royal Family fled to Brazil in 1807 following the French invasion of Portugal.

Work on the palace began in 1747 under the architect Mateus Vicente de Oliveira. Despite being far smaller, the palace is often referred to as the Portuguese Versailles. From 1826, the palace slowly fell from favour with the Portuguese sovereigns. In 1908, it became the property of the state. Following a serious fire in 1934, which gutted the interior, the palace was extensively restored, and today is open to the public as a major tourist attraction.

One wing of the palace, the Pavilion of Dona Maria, built between 1785 and 1792 by the architect Manuel Caetano de Sousa, is now a guest house allocated to foreign heads of state visiting Portugal.

From a discussion of domains-as-usernames on metafilter, I got the notion to check out cortex.com, and, well, it's pretty much what you'd expect from a semi-common dictionary word:

Domain-camped crap.

The results of whatever templated content-generation system they're using are a little interesting, though. Most of it seems like generic keyword stuff, but the close thematic repetition of items is curious. 'Mp3 Players', 'Mp3 Player', and 'Dvd Players' all in the sidebar there.

And hey, Crotchless Panties? Sure! I am wondering what the hell a 'Cortex Styling Iron' is, though -- sounds like something out of absurdist science fiction.

From BC Living....

Vectorial Elevation might sound like a lofty physics experiment run by some mad genius, but this large-scale temporary art exhibit that launches on February 4 is part of the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad’s Digital Edition.

I hadn’t even heard about Vectorial Elevation – the brainchild of Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer – until my neighbours shared their apprehension at having lights beaming into their water-facing living room.

And if anyone every remembers that Seinfeld episode where the neon light from the Kenny Rogers Roasters chicken restaurant sign keeps Kramer up at night, then you’ll know their fears are warranted.

But I digress.

West End condo dwellers needn’t worry about klieg lights turning their sky-high abodes into X-Files fodder. Although the installation is considered to be one of the world’s largest interactive artworks, the 10,000-watt robotic searchlights will actually be beamed skyward from locations in Kitsilano’s Vanier Park and at Sunset Beach, reportedly casting a magical glow that will stretch as far as Richmond and Grouse Mountain.

And unlike the annual fireworks fest, there will be no noise – the installation is silent – smoke, or hoards of people boozing it up on the beaches and leaving their litter behind.

Even better, anyone with an Internet connection can try their hand at creating their own patterns, effectively showcasing their personal lightshow on the world stage.

All you need to do log on to www.vectorialvancouver.net between February 4 and February 28. Creative your own patterns by deciding which angles you want the lights to beam, and setting timing clusters. A personal webpage will be generated for each person that decides to participate.

I’ll be creating my silent showpiece on February 4. Create your personal lightshow and share the link with BCLiving.

This is a photograph from the Rathfarnham 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which took place in Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin, Ireland on Sunday 28th September 2013 at 10:00. This is one of the most popular runs in South County Dublin and is held in support of St. Luke's Cancer Hospital, Rathgar. This year's race attracted over 1,300 participants and the run is open to runners, joggers and walkers. The course is one of the fastest 5ks in the country with a downhill start and finish. This is an excellently organised race with marhsalling at every junction and Garda enforced road closures for the duration of the race. This race was held on a beautiful autumn morning. There was little or no breeze and there was mild temperatures of around 15C for the race.

This is a photograph which is part of a large set of photographs taken at the 1KM and 4KM mark on the course. The entire set of photographs can be found here on our Flickr profile at the following link: www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157647710188747/

Timing and event management was provided by Precision Timing. Results are available on their website at www.precisiontiming.net/result.aspx?v=2100 with additional material available on their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/davidprecisiontiming?fref=ts) See their promotional video on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-7_TUVwJ6Q

The race starts at the easterly side of the N81 Tempelogue Road and Springfield Avenue. The start area is shown here on Google StreetView (goo.gl/maps/kg7FY). The race follows Springfield Avenue along the side of Bushy Park. The race overlaps the final kilometer and the finish as it proceeds to the Rathfarnham Road (Shown here Google Streetview goo.gl/maps/gRrI6). The route heads north on Rathfarnham road as there is a very gentle incline until the junction with the Temleogue Road is reached and runners make a sharp left turn onto the N81 (shown here Google StreetView goo.gl/maps/51S2t). The race then heads south along Templeogue Road where the runners can see the course unfold straight infront of them. The race turns left at Springfield Avenue again (start area) and the final Kilometer is as the first to the finish area (Google Streetview goo.gl/maps/1R08S) just before the Rathfarnham Road Junction. Overall this course is a flat and fast course. There is a net gain of 15M over the whole course with slightly downhill gradients at the start and towards the finish. The course is completely left-handed which makes for favourable conditions. All being equal the course provides an excellent opportunity for every from elite competitors to joggers to set a fast time for themselves.

Your mobile, tablet, or desktop device will also offer you several different options for sharing this photo page on your social media outlets.

We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us.

This also extends the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?

You can download the photographic image here direct to your computer or device. This version is the low resolution web-quality image. How to download will vary slight from device to device and from browser to browser. However - look for a symbol with three dots 'ooo' or the link to 'View/Download' all sizes. When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.

I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?

If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. For offline usage and printing all of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution.

Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.

I would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Creative Commons aims to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

The Queluz National Palace (Portuguese: Palácio Nacional de Queluz) is a Portuguese 18th-century palace located at Queluz, a freguesia of the modern-day Sintra Municipality, in the Lisbon District. Jiuzhaigou National Park is a stunning (from what I've seen/read about in various books, the most stunning) park in northern Sichuan province. It's near the Gansu border.

Jiuzhaigou literally means "nine fortified villages." The nine are Tibetan villages, as the park is on the edge of the Tibetan plateau. Seven of the nine villages are still inhabited.

The park is over 180,000 acres in size and ranges in elevation from 2,000 meters (6,600 ft) to 4,500 meters (14,800 ft).

Jiuzhaigou is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 1992) and a World Biosphere Reserve (1997).

Not having been to Yellowstone National Park in the US (but based on pictures), I think the topography is a bit similar.

There are a lot of things I love about this park. Though the entrance fee (~310 RMB, if I recall correctly) is steep, I love that the Chinese do a much, much better job with conservation in this park than in the others I've been to.

For starters, access is very controlled. There are very well-maintained paths and the only way between the various parts of the park -- by transportation -- are via buses they provide. You also can, of course, hike up and down the length of the valley.

The only downside is that -- Chinese being Chinese -- you still find people smoking in the parks and they aren't always good at being environmentally conscious/aware. So...you find areas where people don't throw trash in designated areas. However, compared to most other places I've been in China, they are MUCH better here than in other parks. Overall, I was very pleased, except when passing by inconsiderate smokers.

Getting to the park from Chengdu (nearest main city) is pretty easy. There are really two choices: a reasonably-priced 10 hour bus ride or an obscenely expensive (over $300) 45 minute flight, which is still followed by a ~2 hour ride in a private car which costs close to another $80-100.

On this trip, time was more important than money, so Doug & I went with the flight. It was a fun flight. Basically flying from roughly 2,000 ft in elevation (Chengdu, which is also at the end of a broad valley/plain) up to the Jiuzhaigou Valley...over 4,000 feet in elevation higher. The drive from the airport to the park was some of the most amazing scenery I'd seen anywhere in its own right. I hadn't expected that, though, and didn't have my gear out, nor did I feel like asking the driver to stop every three seconds just so we could take pictures.

We had two nights in the Jiuzhaigou area, but our hotel -- unfortunately -- was about 30-45 minutes past the park, so we only spent one day in the park...though it was a day well-spent, as far as I was concerned.

To imagine the layout of the park is pretty easy. You buy tickets at the main gate, walk in, and immediately take a bus about 15 km up to one of the 9 villages. From there, you walk along a boardwalk for about 1 km to another bus stop whence you can choose which of two forks to continue up.

Most tour guides and previous visitors give the following advice: go as early as possible, as soon as the park opens if you can. (We got there around 8:00 and the lines were already immense; even by Chinese standards, this park gets unbelievably crowded -- especially during holiday periods, which we intentionally missed by two weeks.) Take the bus up the valley to the top of the park -- either fork is fine -- and hike back down to the main junction. Take a bus up the other fork, then hike down to the main gate.

Having been there, I can only say that that's an incredibly ambitious plan. If you want to go slowly at all (as photographers are wont to do) and enjoy the scenery, I don't know how that's possible to do in one day. Doug & I arrived at 8:00, made our way up the right fork (Panda Lake is on that side), and hiked down to the main junction at Nuorilang Falls. That alone seemed to take until close to 4:00 in the afternoon.

At any rate, all of the pictures here are exclusively from the "right" fork down to Nuorilang Falls. Having ridden the bus from the main gate to the center of the park, I'll say it was a beautiful ride, but not nearly as jaw-dropping in terms of scenery as the upper valley.

This is definitely a park I'd love to return to, possibly in winter, though access is obviously much more restricted due to snow. Though it would be great to shoot here in winter. Next time, I'm sure I'll take the bus up there...

As usual, for a different perspective, feel free to view my friend Doug's pictures of Jiuzhaigou on his webpages:

Here is something interesting, an old ARA bus #1527 which is currently going under restoration with Omnibus Society. I photographed this bus almost a year ago to the date :)

These buses are one of a few I grew up with in the 1980's, an iconic Auckland bus that we all remember from the good ole days! Enjoy :)
