For the Looking Close... On Friday Challenge, Picture with text added in post production.
Happy Friday!
"When I think about those summer nights
Singing out the window, on the back roads, Sweet Child of Mine
Sipping on the locos
Spark a light
Ain't it funny how the best days of my life
Was all that wasted time, all that wasted time"
-Keith Urban
An oldie...

"You did not desert me my brothers in arms
There's so many different worlds,So many different suns
And we have just one world But we live in different ones
Now the sun's gone to hell and The moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight And every line in your palm
We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms"
Mark Knopfler

Well here it is, the ultimate in time waste management. I hate to say it, but I worked hard on this. I am going to need therapy just to unscramble my brain.
Have a wonderful Saturday!
I don't normally say a whole lot about the photographs I create. I create them, shoot them, give them a title, and then post them. That's it... done! But I will have to make an exception in this case. Quite a few months ago I went to California to attend a seminar by Kyle Cease (www.kylecease.com/). The purpose of the seminar (which was named "Evolving Out Loud" www.kylecease.com/live-events/evolving-out-loud/)... a little complex to explain, but I would say it's about trying to get rid of the bullshit in life that misdirects or distracts you from living a life that is free and full. If you want to know more specifically about it, consider "liking" Kyle Cease's page and going through the material he has posted, or is posting. I think it's important that you have an open mind as you delve in to the topics he discusses... you don't have to believe/agree with what he's saying... just let down your guard, and put aside your preconceived notions. I'll admit, I don't necessarily agree with EVERYTHING he says, but I can tell you that I've learned a TON of things from him... he has some great insight, as is a pretty darn good speaker. And, with a background as a comedian, he's quite entertaining as well.
Anyway... as the seminar came to a close, we were presented with a challenge... which is where this long-winded write-up is coming from. The premise of the challenge was to choose something that you were going to do for X-number of days, that is... something you've always wanted to do, something you thought would be healthier (physically or mentally) for you to do, etc... For example, workout for 60 days, or do something helpful for a complete stranger for 30 days. Now, I may have deviated a little from how everyone else executed the challenge, in that I knew mine might not be a "daily" thing... but still, I was doing something that I've always wanted to do, and it was something I could share with others to maybe help them out, etc... So, what I chose for my challenge, was to come up with a photo idea in 30 days, and document the entire creative process from beginning to end. It is something I've always wanted to document and share. So that's what I did...
One day I read a short story on Facebook, it was a true story, and it really got me thinking... shortly afterward, I came up with a photo idea. So, I got a video camera and documented where the idea started from, and what I was thinking about for the photo. For the next couple weeks I would record video of progress I had made on the idea, props I had thought of, elaborating on the story and where my brain was taking me, acquiring the shoot location, and organizing help.
The ultimate goal for me, was to post all the video and the final image at the same time, but life can get very busy and distracting. So, here's the photo, the video will follow this up... I'm just not sure when yet. However, seeing as how in the video I'll be talking about the story behind the photo, rather than make you wait, I'll just tell you it right now...
I read a story about a guy who's wife divorced him. When asked some really hard questions about his failed marriage, the guy responded by saying that it's been 4 years and he still had a hard time dealing with it because he didn't know why she left him. As I thought about that, I went through a few different emotions, as I too have gone through a divorce and failed relationships. But what stood out to me most, wasn't that he didn't know "why" she left him, but how much time he had spent stuggling over the "why"... four years of time where it seemed like more energy was being put into getting an answer that today, would probably not change his life one bit. Four years that could have been spent moving on to bigger, better things, or a more healthy love. So that's what the photo is about... the calendars represent time going by... the pile of paper is us trying to communicate with people who have an answer to a question we have... the guy walking away and throwing the last paper on the pile, is making the decision that too much time has gone by trying to get the answers, and it's time to move on.
"A house divided against itself cannot stand." -Abraham Lincoln. I hope my message is not too obscure?
As I sat and made this image, I had a lot running through my mind...
I asked myself... Why?
Why are people considerate? Why are people inconsiderate? Why did I forget to charge my extra battery? Why did Moby Dick, Davy Jones (not the guy from The Monkees), The old man of the sea, or one of the guys from The Deadliest Catch just drag his feet across this very last section of this beach that I was about to photograph? Was that the guy from the Monkees? Why did I change batteries, only to find out that I didn't change batteries... Why haven't I spent more time on this beach... It's nice here. What am I going to eat for dinner? What did I really accomplish this year? Will I get more done next year? Damn those lemon cookies are good... Why didn't I make more? I wonder what this place is like at high tide? I wonder how many Great Whites are out there, and how far off shore are they? Why have I gotten away from making color images? Why did I ever make color images? Why is it that every time I go to make a color image, the colorful sunset doesn't happen? (Note... Rumor has it that Jim Patterson sucks all the good light and color his way) Why did I forget my jacket? How did I get so lucky? Why don't I have better luck? Why do I love pizza so much? Where did Moby Dick, Davy Jones (not the guy from The Monkees), The old man of the sea, or one of the guys from The Deadliest Catch disappear to? What ever happened to The Monkees? Why am I singing Your Auntie Grizelda in my head right now? Did I pick the right exposure time for this light????
Then the answer came to me.... Why ask why? Does it really matter? Damn! another question!
As the light faded away, and the cold became too much for me... It was clear to me.... Life is short... Time moves fast... Live each day for today... Don't ask why.... And Damn those cookies were good!
Thank you for another year...
A good reminder not to dwell on time lost, missed opportunities or what could have been.

No Way Fest 2008 at the always money hungry Alley Katz in ugly Shockoe Bottom! Awesome hardcore punk fest held last weekend! All of these were shot with a Canon EOS-20D with a 15mm L glass lens I borrowed from The Pixel Factory and a Speedlite 277T on a Promaster Off Camera Sync Cord! Sorry if you are checking these out and I didn't get pictures of your band, but if you ever play a show in Richmond again please let me know and I will come to shoot you guys!!!
1000 dice forming an image of God's mug (or Charleton Heston). Not a new idea. Pierre Fouche did a piece for Bell Gallery using a bunch of dice. I was pointed to a music video that used dice in the same way (http://joyriderfilms.com/wade_shotter/ankle_injury.html). And lets not forget the much more interesting Rubik's Cube Portraits that are popping up in the tubes. But I had some dice and was feeling like getting into a zen state so there you have it.
Love that the smaller the image, the clearer the representation within it. Perhaps something metaphorical there.

Rationalization, objectification, and the devitalization and rigidification produced by defensive polemics had carried theology very far from the sapiential perspective.

Started editing some photos from this weekend out on the Cape, got sidetracked, then ended up with this vintage-y looking travel poster. Rather than declare the time completely wasted, why not share it?

This song has many personal memories associated with it, and always serves to haunt me with the demons of my past. Though this song was written with drug addiction as its subject, we all have our personal demons and regrets that we slay in our lives. Some just keep coming back and need to get trampled on once and a while.

I completely forgot when I ordered my Robot Heroes set that paying shipping is far preferable to having to wait in the line at the Wal-Mart "Customer Service" area.
THOSE WHO HAVE DRANK VODKA EVERYDAY FOR YEARS...know that quitting is not a piece of cake, but there are those who will state that it was nothing, nothing at all, "just woke up one day and said, it's over, and that was that." If that was the case, more power to you, my friend, you are a most powerful individual. But there are others who know that getting the monkey off one's back is not, or was not, an easy chore.

This is on a section of coastline where DOZENS of tourists and locals alike have been washed away, most never to be seen again.
Hmm... sounds dangerous... what we need is some sort of FOOLPROOF safety device to stop this happening.
Might I mention that this life ring is about fifty metres from the waterline for most of the time.... genius
