Ferdinand, a volunteer of the Oxford Food Bank, shows a mega-chocolate tray bake that will be delivered to a community kitchen that feeds homeless people.
The Oxford Food Bank is a food charity that relies on volunteers seven days a week and every day of the year. Its double mission is to feed the community and protect the environment. The charity collects surplus food from local supermarkets and wholesalers and delivers it for free to around 60 registered charities in the Oxford area. Even though the food received is rejected by supermarkets as "surplus" food, it is good quality food that would have been thrown away - most often because of a date stamped on it. Best Before is still good after.

Note: This photo is part of an ongoing project on food waste that I have been zooming in over the past years. Most of these photos have never been published anywhere and have sat on an external hard-drive for too long. I decided to use more of Flickr, so over the next months I will be uploading here photos taken for the project (aiming at one-per-day). If you're interested in the subject, keep an eye on the "Love Food Not Waste" album.

While one billion people across the planet suffer from hunger, the amount of food wastage taking place every single day in developed countries is obscene. With up to a third of all food thrown away, producing food simply to bin it is a waste of all those precious resources – land, water, energy – that were put into growing, processing and transporting it.
My photo project, ‘Love Food Not Waste’, illustrates some of the levels of the food waste reduction pyramid: Feeding Landfills is the lowest level in the hierarchy and should be illegal; Feeding AD Plants, which, despite not being the best way of dealing with surplus food, at least generates modest amounts of energy, and also fertiliser; and Feeding Bellies, where food waste heroes such as freegans and food charities help rescue some of the surplus food and re-distribute it to people in need.
A comprehensive waste management plan has been put in place and recycling stations are located throughout the building.
The Dmax mobile trailer system is designed to process a variety of waste streams including waste from digesters and wet wells, reed bed material, gully waste and waste from lagoon and pond emptying services. This unit is employed by many contractors to the sewage industry who have seen reductions in waste to landfill of some 70%

Everything from books and toys to furniture has been exchanged by residents in Kirkby in a bid to help the environment.
A ‘Swap Day’ was held by Knowsley Housing Trust (KHT), Knowsley Council and Quarry Green Residents Association, on Saturday, March 27, to reduce the amount of waste residents were sending to landfill sites.
“We had a lot of people picking up some great items” said Kerry Kirkpatrick, from KHT.
“KHT is committed to recycling and helping our tenants reduce the amount of waste they produce, so we thought this was a great idea.
“The whole community got involved which shows how much people care about helping the environment."
John Flaherty, Knowsley Council Service Director for Neighbourhood Delivery said: “Swap Days are a great way of prolonging the life of really useful items and preventing them from going to landfill. It’s also a great way to recycle all your unwanted household items and help Knowsley reach its recycling target of 30%.
"The Swap day has proved to be really popular and great fun. Swap Days will be repeated in other areas of the borough throughout 2010”

My awesome friend and final project partner, Hanh. She made the most amazing dress out of energy bar wrappers - she's passionate about recycling and waste reduction, and she's super knowledgeable.
To celebrate finishing school, she dressed up and we walked around the Mission taking pictures. So many people were fascinated by her and the dress, it was so much fun watching her interact and seeing them react.

La Poudrière is an income-sharing community of about 60 people living in three locations in Belgium: Brussels, Péruwelz and Rummen, and is a member of the Emmaus International network. The main activity of La Poudrière is a recycling/reuse business, which enables the community to be financially self-supporting. The community collects and sells a wide range of second-hand goods, from furniture, bric-a-brac, electrical goods and bicycles to clothes, toys, books, records and DVDs. La Poudrière gives a second life to both objects and people, enabling socially excluded people to rebuild their confidence by gaining new skills, and conserving the environment by saving waste from landfill.
Emmaus International is an international movement born in 1949. It relies on its 337 groups, spread in 37 countries, in all 4 corners of the world. Emmaus groups work with and for the poor, fighting against the causes of exclusion.

Loved this origami envelope for sending Tony a new SIM. Simple idea, but nice. Easier to recycle than most packaging.

When your trash container is full (capacity is 2 cubic yards), you can use the optional cover to keep animals, people, and weather away. Then you are able to put another container in for continuous use of the compactor.
The P200 is an Outdoor Trash Compactor, but with optional rear chutes that attach to the building with security doors and interlocks, your staff does not have to go out side to throw out the trash.
