Excellent time in the woods today. Dozens of Silver-washed fritillaries and other butterflies on the wing and loads of dragons, bees and spiders etc... :@)

Two minutes later, the heavens burst, and all the people disappeared.

The famous tower is a campanile, a bell tower standing free from the Cattedrale Metropolitana Primaziale di Santa Maria Assunta, designed from 1173 by architect Diotisalvi.

The Wash, in eastern England, is a Special Protection Area under European legislation. It is made up of very extensive salt marsh, major inter tidal banks of sand and mud, shallow waters and deep channels.

Migrating birds, such as geese, ducks and wading birds, come to the Wash in huge numbers to spend the winter, with an average total of around 400,000 birds present at any one time.

It has been estimated that around two million birds will use the Wash for feeding and roosting during their annual migration.

The build up starts in mid August, and reaches a peak in December and January.

A few days a year it is possible to witness the gigantic involo of waders driven by exceptional tides at The Wash Bay in English Norfolk. In this photo part of the countless Red knots (Calidris canutus) flying all around us. Unfortunately the light is what it is in February but the experience was wonderful and exciting

Just an old tree washed up on shore at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, just north of Half Moon Bay, California. But I like it. I have lots of pics of this log; from all angles and focal lengths. Close-up to macro.

From my Wild and Weathered Wood collection.

I should have called this shot 'breached' given half of the north sea came over the top of my boots and filled my wellies.

Though darkness was falling we hiked about a mile down the largest branch of Nielson Wash. This branch had some tafoni too as seen on the left side of this rock formation standing in the wash. One of these days this formation will topple and be sent down stream by flood waters.

At a car wash ;-))

Reminded me of the song Car Wash by Christina Aguilera (feat. Missy Elliott).

Or if you prefer the original by Rose Royce?

Enjoy ;-))

In 1634 Jacques-Philipe Cornut (1606-1651) saw this Nerine in a French garden owned by the famed Morin family, well-known nurserymen of Paris. He named it Narcissus japonicus. Apparently a Dutch eastindiaman had earlier been shipwrecked on Guernsey. The Dutch traded heavily with Japan and would return to Europe by way of the Cape of Good Hope. Some of that ship's wreckage among which the bulbs of our plant washed away and quickly brightened the shores of Guernsey. Soon they were growing in Europe and England, too. Cornut incorrectly assumed that our plant hailed from Japan by way of South Africa and Guernsey. It is, in fact, a South African plant. In 1820 it was renamed Nerine sarniensis - from Guernsey - by astute English botanist William Herbert (1778-1947). Incidentally, Cornut remarks that their lack of aroma is compensated by the very beauty of the colors of the flower.

Here in the Amsterdam Hortus it's Autumn and one of the few bright plants to be seen. In the background Euryops, also from South Africa.

Some time after a low-colour sunset the clouds began to glow pink. This went on for some time. A treat.

A tiny CP T07 rolls west in the heat with only 6 cars from IKO in tow. The early morning mine run was cut short after they came across about 300ft of washed out trackage. They turned back for Havelock yard and were only able to take a few valuable loads from IKO to Toronto.

The last moments of sunshine brightens up the bays at the Benton Car Wash. A beautiful sunset fill the sky. Car wash structures have passed the test of time as many have been around for decades. The controls can be upgraded using the existing structure.
