The pairing of the legendary Merlin engine and the P-51 Mustang eventually resulted in the P-51D, which provided the US Army Air Forces’ with a high-performance, high-altitude, long range fighter that could escort heavy bomber formations all the way to Berlin and back. The changes significantly reduced the unacceptable loss rates bomber crews had suffered since the daylight bombing campaign began in the summer of 1942. Between 1941 and 1946, roughly 1,000 African American pilots were trained at a segregated air base in Tuskegee, Alabama. The most famous of the Tuskegee Airmen were the 332nd Fighter Group, also known as the “Red Tails” for the distinctive markings of their planes. The 99th Pursuit Squadron, later renamed the 99th Fighter Squadron, also distinguished themselves in combat. Together they flew more than 15,000 sorties and lost 66 men in the line of duty. This aircraft is painted in the markings of one of the aircraft known to have been flown by the squadron.

Civil War Days at Conner Prairie

ok, so it's a bit weird that i am taking pictures of my bruises, but i am amused that in 4 days i manages to get 4 big, colorful bruises. this is very unusual for me to be so banged up. The color quality isn't that great, but just imagine bright blue and purple for the big one.

Today marks the 85th anniversary of the outbreak of the Winter War.

Stalin had decided to conquer Finland in two weeks, but the Soviet parade march to Helsinki was halted by the icy death in Finland's winter forests.

The Winter War ended 105 days later, and the peace treaty was signed on March 12, 1940.

Without the incredible spirit of the Winter War and the selfless sacrifice of our veteran generation, Finland's independence would have been lost.

You can pop off his chest plate to have his tunic flap up or down. Not the greatest of features, but a nice detail non the less. The lightsaber hilt is from Obi-Wan Kenobi (AOTC).

The National Museum of the Marine Corps, located near the Marine Corps base in Quantico, has been one of the top tourist attractions in Virginia since it was built in 2006. It's unique shape is the design of Curtis W. Fentress--symbolic of the Iwo Jima flag-raising.

In the first encounter with the Covenant there were a lot of wounded soldiers.

I took few photos. Here, Beta has lost his forearm.

The Covenant lost the battle, but the price was high for both sides.

CAMP PUNISHMENTS-TOO FOND OF WHISKY.-SCENE IN THE ARMY OF THE MISSISSIPPI

Harper's Weekly, June 28, 1862

"ON page 412 we illustrate two of the punishments adopted in our army. One of the pictures represents the DRUMMING OUT OF A COWARD FROM GENERAL BURNSIDE'S ARMY. The fellow was marched through the lines between a file of soldiers, with his head cropped, and a large placard "coward" affixed to his back, while the band played the "Rogue's March."

The other picture represents one of the punishments for drunkenness adopted in General Halleck's Army of the Mississippi. The drunkard is made to get into a barrel. which is so suspended that his head and his feet project, and locomotion, if not agreeable, is not impossible. The barrel is labeled, "Too fond of whisky." Thus accoutred, the miserable fellow is the butt of the scoffs and jeers of his comrades for a day, and learns a lesson which ought to teach him the virtue of temperance for the rest of his life.

The Cwmcarn War Memorial was raised by members of the town and unveiled by Major Sir John Wyndham Beynon, Baronet, on 5th March 1922. The memorial, now a Grade II listed building, was initially erected to commemorate the 80 local men of Cwmcarn and Pontywaun who made the supreme sacrifice in the First World War...

Day 234 I've had the idea of taking the War Memorial in Leicester for a while. It seemed appropriate to wait until Remembrance Day, we found a group of what we believe to be De Montfort university students giving a reading (in Greatcoats) of Journey's End by R.C.Sheriff.
