US Civil War Battle camp life and battle re-enactment "Bringing history to life", Fort Stevens State Park, Oregon.

Fort Stevens was constructed during the US Civil War, initially to protect the Columbia River from a feared invasion by the British Navy, but also in case the Confederate forces crossed the country and sailed up the coast. It may seem odd, but Oregon has an actual Civil War era historical fort (later rebuilt for WW I and WW II).

The oppressive, dark, shattered shapes of this amazing building are the perfect structure for such museum.

This is a hard one for me to post. Normally, while I am painting, I watch something educational on the tv. That helps to babysit my conscious mind and allow my energy/chi/qi to flow from me through my brush. But, I think I didn't have anything like that to watch this day and I ended up watching a war movie. It might have been "Thin Red Line" but am not sure. Anyway, it was quite a violent movie and I feel like that comes out in the painting.

Since my goal is to bring good/peaceful energy into the world, it is hard for me to post this one because I think it shows the turmoil of war. I think we have plenty of that kind of energy in the world already. Still, it is a unique piece and a part of my body of work... I think I painted this in 2002 or 2003.

The War Memorial in Regency Square was erected to commemorate the 152 soldiers of the Royal Sussex Regiment who died between 1900-1902 in the Boer War. It was unveiled on October 29th 1904 by the Marquess of Abergavenny, Lord Lieutenant of Sussex. The bronze statue, modelled on a sergeant sounding the charge, is based on a real incident that took place during the South African campaign at Doornkop. The pedestal is surmounted by four artillery shells.

It is signed C. HARTWELL 1904

Once we arrived with the boat to Harwich and go out, we saw there was barbed wire on both sides of the gangway. I think they knew the war was approaching. And just outside there was a small shop that sold chocolates with a small placard in front of the window that said "Gift Shop". And I got very scared. "Gift", "poison" in German. I thought, oh my God, they are going to poison us after all! Gift became the first word I learned in English.

I wanted to post the picture of the sentence that I copied, but it was a little out of focus.

Avrei voluto mettere la foto della frase precedente, ma era un po' sfocata; ci tenevo a ricopiarla però.

Summary

First World War memorial, unveiled on 2 November 1919, with Second World War additions.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.

One such memorial was raised at Preshute as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the 16 members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. It was unveiled on Sunday 2 November 1919 at a ceremony attended by local dignitaries and clergy. The memorial was paid for by subscription at a cost of £70, and designed by architect G H Shackle who also designed the Grade II-listed Headbourne Worthy War Memorial.

The names of the eight parishioners who fell during the Second World War were subsequently added to the memorial.

Details

First World War memorial, 1919, with Second World War additions.

DESCRIPTION: Preshute War Memorial stands on a raised mound in the churchyard of the Church of St George (Grade II*-listed), to the south-east of the chancel.

It is of granite and takes the form of a tall, tapering Latin cross rising from a rough-hewn, four-sided, tapering plinth. The inscriptions and names are in incised lettering to the plinth and cross shaft respectively.

The main inscription is incised into a recessed panel cut into the east face of the plinth and reads, IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ OF PRESHUTE/ WHO FELL IN THE WAR/ 1914 – 1919. The 16 names of those who died in the First World War are recorded above on the east face of the shaft, below a carved cross pattée symbol in a circle.

The dates 1939 – 1945 are incised into a recessed panel cut into the north face of the plinth. The 8 names of those who died in the Second World War are recorded above on the north face of the shaft.
