Montevideo Maru (Japanese: もんてびでお丸) was a merchant ship of the Empire of Japan. Launched in 1926, it was pressed into service as a military transport during World War II. It was sunk by the American submarine USS Sturgeon on 1 July 1942, drowning 1,054 people, mostly Australian prisoners of war and civilians who were being transported from Rabaul, the former Australian territory of New Guinea, to Hainan.[2] The sinking is considered the worst maritime disaster in Australia's history. The wreck of the Montevideo Maru was discovered on 18 April 2023.

Diefenbunker: Canada's Cold War Museum

Canada participated in the Korean War of 1950-53 as part of the United Nations.

As a former Japanese possession, Korea had been divided between the USSR, occupying the North, and the US, occupying the South, following the Second World War. The country remained divided and a Communist government was installed in the North. The Korean War began on 25 June 1950 when forces from Communist North Korea invaded South Korea. The United States led a United Nations coalition to repel the invaders. Canada joined the UN coalition and sent its armed forces to fight on the Korean peninsula to help stop Communist expansion.

The first Canadian contribution to the conflict came with the dispatch to Korean waters of the destroyers HMCS Cayuga, Athabaskan and Sioux on 12 July 1950. The RCAF also began regular trans-Pacific flights to Japan to support UN operations in Korea.

Canada's peacetime army in 1950 was tiny, consisting of some 20,000 all ranks. The government therefore decided to raise a volunteer force, the Canadian Army Special Force (CASF) for service in Korea. The majority of CASF volunteers were veterans of the Second World War. Later, regular Canadian army units were rotated to the front in Korea.

Canada participated in Korea for three years, on land, sea and in the air. Much of the land combat took place in very harsh conditions. Canadian units distinguished themselves during these actions, including the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, which received a US Presidential Unit Citation.

In all, 26,791 Canadians served in the Korean War. Of these, 516 lost their lives. Canada had shown it was willing to stand by the United Nations and its allies to stop aggression.

We are inundated with bad, even apocalyptic, news about the economy, climate, food shortages, war, nuclear meltdown. However, at no time in human history have we lived so long or so well: smallpox has been eliminated; polio is nearly gone; lead pollution in the air in the US has been virtually eliminated. Counter-intuitively wars are less frequent, less deadly and far less costly since the end of the cold war.

This sculpture addresses those issues from the highly suspect optimistic point of view.

Each tubular piece is an abstraction of a graph representing a generally desirable 'ending.' The sculpture is, in short, a random catalog of good news.

Each tube has a number stamped at its end. A guide depicts both the original graph and a representation of its sculptural abstraction (in red) along with extent and data sources.

"pictures of fighting, soldiers, and military hardware are ... more compelling to viewers than images of, say, water-purification projects. Reports of violence and destruction are rarely balanced with reports about the overwhelming majority of the Earth's population not being harmed.”

Hero of War, Rise Against

by Charles Umlauf at McNay Art Museum, San Antonio.

There was one particularly striking grave in Stockton church yard.

It was an old war grave for someone who passed away back in 1920. Despite being around for a long time, the grave was in very good condition & was gleaming white. The well kept white looked particularly striking in the light as well.

We were planning a walk around the Mall today, specifically to hit the Vietnam War Memorial and the WWII one. When we looked at a map and saw the Korean War Memorial, and Pookie and KtG were all, "Let's stop there!" And I was like, "I didn't realize there was a Korean War Memorial... Whatevs." But then we got there and it was incredible. Such a great memorial, and such cool sculpture, and such a moving commemoration of a war we don't really learn much about these days. I'm so glad we stopped.

It's a little known fact that ant colonies are, in fact, highly territorial and often war upon their neighbors. Here you can see two such colonies, one of red ants, the other of black. Both have cleared the area surrounding their nest site. This allows them to better see any approaching enemies and to give them a suitable battle ground.

If you look closely you'll see the war underway, complete with siege towers, catapults, and a battering ram.
