We call this the 'secret garden' as when you're looking down from the house this part of the land is not so obvious as there's a large hedge with only a smallish gap where I'm standing to take the photo which divides our two gardens. The little bridge is covering a stream. The first tree on the left is a fig tree and the large tree centre stage further down is a walnut tree. The ploughed area to the right is ready for planting vegetables and the ploughed area to the left is for fruit. The two hedges you see on the left and right in the middle of the photo were cut right back as they had been allowed to grow too high. It's opened up the garden quite a lot. You can see lots of cut bamboo to the right further down. This took a lot of effort to cut down! It had to be done to allow the sun to shine on the new vegetable area. It was growing very large as the boundary between our garden and the garden of our neighbours out of sight to the right of the photo. Our neighbour was very happy that we cut it down as it was impeding the amount of light reaching her vegetable planting area (which is huge!). The green bags are there to put rubbish in as and when. There are two further terraced gardens down past the walnut tree and then the river. It's quite an area all told. Some of it, especially the land down by the river is allowed to grow 'au naturel'. It's just too much to maintain. I'm fortunate and lucky to have such large and differing types of garden/land with the house.

We went for a drive a couple of days ago and just happened to notice a bear jump into a large tree. After stopping for a better look I counted 4 bears in this one tree. I believe it was a sow with three cubs as one was much larger than the others. Not a great picture but a rather special occurrence.
A summerday - time to be outside into the vineyards, the woods and more.

Last summer this sweet little fawn was testing the limits of her distance from Mom. She was hiding behind one of our giant walnut trees, but keeping an eye on her mother.
This red-bellied woodpecker is searching for insects in this tree by twisting his neck and using his tongue to search under the bark.
The poor little owl was asleep when the woodpecker landed next to her and began to peck at the branch on which they were sitting.
In fact, I followed the woodpecker and I only saw the owl when it landed next to her.. I think they are old acquaintances because this is the second time I have photographed an owl while following a woodpecker. Owls are invisible beings to me, I only see them with the first darkness, but I hear them more than I see them.
I listened to this little titmouse sing for a long time today. Such a happy bird. As I listened closely, I was sure I heard Chicago's 1970 song:
"Colour My World."
As time goes on,
I realize
Just what you mean
To me
And now,
Now that you're near,
Promise your love
That I've waited to share
And dreams
Of our moments together
Color my world with hope of loving you.

I have been working with Photoshop for some time but have never edited one of my photos in PS to be posted in Flickr. This is my first!!!! Everything in the photograph is as it was when shot. The only change from the orginial is the deletion of twigs. What do you think?

It's wonderful to see a pair of Greenfinch's in my garden, sadly they have become a rare visitor since the outbreak of a disease called "Trichomonosis"
Trichomonosis is the name given to a disease caused by the protozoan parasite Trichomonas gallinae. It has been recorded in a number of garden bird species and is widely acknowledged to be the causal factor in the rapid decline of the British Greenfinch population that was first noted in late summer 2006. The disease is also known as ‘canker’ when seen in pigeons and doves, and as ‘frounce’ when seen in birds of prey. It has been known as a disease of cage birds for some time.

We drove to the Hope Valley in California to see the fall colors in the Sierra Nevada mountains. On the way we passed by a walnut tree farm near Lockeford, where we noticed a lot of dust in the trees. We stopped, it was a good photo opportunity! It turned out that the walnuts just were getting harvested. One machine drove along the nicely arranged trees to shake them one by one to make the nuts fall to the ground, another machine arranged the fallen nuts and debris in the middle between tree rows, and a third machine scooped it up. All that created a lot of dust, to the delight of us three photographers.
I processed a balanced, a paintery, and a photographic HDR photo from two RAW exposures, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.
