In Offshoot’s Walk With Me for this season, I’m in the product photography group led by Stacey of jewellery materials supplier Yellow Brick Road . She photographs her creations in her product studio using a light tent with lights similar to this setup. A group of us recently brought items along to see how this was done – I borrowed this black and silver bracelet from herself – under threat of serious harm if anything bad happened to it! :-)

As with any other type of photography, doing it well is a lot harder than it looks! Firstly, all the technical aspects such as studio, lighting, backdrop, camera and tripod must be setup - or better yet - get Stacey to do this! Even more importantly, the layout needs thought and experimentation to look good – and in a commercial situation a client would need specific parts or attributes displayed in the manner they believe would generate sales. I took this with Stacey’s Canon 7D and her Canon 100mm f2.8 macro at f22, ISO 100 for 0.8 of a second – at these long exposures we all had to stand very still to avoid sending any vibration up the tripod. Initially we placed it on a normal mirror but I though it looked better on this black mirror - with the polished stones adding further interest to the setting.
