Macro Mondays theme: Glass

My subject is a bud vase I bought 60 years ago at a yard sale of an old family friend and antique dealer. To my 16 year old self it was a treasure and reminded me of the art of Aubrey Beardsley. I have always called it my Aubrey Beardsley vase, though he was from the Art Nouveau period and this vase is probably Deco. The glass is in two layers. The inside layer is a nearly opaque yellow and the outside layer is clear. The black and white details are painted on the outer part of the clear layer. It is difficult to photograph as the inner and outer surfaces both catch the light and the painted lines cast shadows. Unfortunately the best lighting had the worst background, so not as artistic.

What would probably have been one of my favourite shots of 2020 will be entered into the "your worst shot of 2020" group.

For the past few months I've been hoping to shoot a westbound in the morning blue hour from a bridge about 5 mins from my home. When I got up in the mornings I'd been listening out for trains being called. Nothing. They would either come while it was still dark or once it was light.

Last Monday however, I got up at dawn and not only was the previous week's snow still thick on the ground, but a thick fog had settled. It was just perfect. I turned on my scanner and immediately heard a dispatcher calling a west bound. Downed my coffee and headed out the door.

I made it with about a minute to spare, and tried to focus on the bottom of the signal but in the low light the AF struggled. I thought I got it though and clamped down on that focus lock.

The shot looked fantastic in the view finder...until I zoomed in. Couldn't believe it. Don't know exactly what happened, but I have had many frustrations with the D7100's auto focus...

Penmaenpool wooden toll bridge, Snowdonia national park, Gwynedd, Wales, UK

Towards the end of the 19th century a wooden bridge was built over the Afon Mawddach. The bridge replaced a ferry crossing that transported people from one side of the estuary to the other.

The bridge was built by the Penmaenpool Bridge Company in 1879. The wooden toll bridge has since been designated a Grade II listed registered landmark along with the toll keeper's cottage and toll booth.

The bridge does in fact have a tragic past as it was the scene of one of North Wales' worst disasters in 1966 when fifteen people, including four children, died in a tragic pleasure boat accident. The tragedy occurred after the pleasure boat the “Prince of Wales” struck the bridge and sank.

“There is something to be learned from a rainstorm. When meeting with a sudden shower, you try not to get wet and run quickly along the road. But doing such things as passing under the eaves of houses, you still get wet. When you are resolved from the beginning, you will not be perplexed, though you still get the same soaking.” Hagakuri

I was out at Fort Desoto Sunday morning and the sunrise itself wasn't great but provided some pretty cool silhouettes. Can you ID the birds by the silhouette? Answers below.

My entry for the FLICKR "Your Worst Shot 2020" group.

Hard for me to choose, as there are so many. I try hard to compensate for that problem with VOLUME. I think what happened here is I was foolishly using a monopod and ballhead with this unwieldy heavy lens - this choice in the interest of mobility.

Today, under pressure from the kids, I entered Sesi, our white german shepherd in the annual village dog show. I was reluctant because frankly our dog is a nightmare. She's lovely, especially with children, but just so totally wired I tend to keep her away from other dogs.

So, I struggled into the ring with Sesi barking and straining on the leash, and was asked to parade her first (I guess so they could get rid of us). The judge was some Crufts winner who was evidently expecting dogs without manky matted hair behind the ears. In front of the crowd, she asked me to walk around the ring. I pulled this off, just about, but when I came back she asked me to prance.

'Pardon me?'

'Prance,' she said again. Only this time it sounded like an order.

At this point I felt a bit dizzy. I didn't want to let the kids down by refusing to do as I was told, but couldn't quite bring myself to do it. I did a half-hearted little skip and then stopped, which just made me look as if I'd hurt myself or something.

Anyway, we didn't win, or earn a certificate or anything at all. In fact, we had to take her home early for howling. But she's our dog, a big part of the family as well as my only work colleague, and didn't kill anyone. For this reason, I thought I would show her off here.

Day 301. Actually the worst was already gone by this time, leaving some nice clouds and blue sky in its wake!

worst possible kind of day for taking pictures. wandered around all day and only took this one picture. still, it's worth having!

taken with a canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens, because that's what was on the camera already.

I got home from work and managed a little backyard birdwatching before the worst of the smoke rolled in. I didn't see anyone outside of the usual suspects except for the goldfinches, who have been here continuously since summer, and are now in very large numbers. We had a very mild summer, so the yard is still full of bracken ferns like this one, which normally would have died off some time ago. Some rain right now would be helpful in many ways. Well I'm not quite sure what happened here the shots either side which have identical exposure settings don't look like this. I was up near the Witches of Wardlow again this afternoon and it was getting dark. That's all I can say the rest is down to coincidence and supernatural powers.

Do you string me along for the thrill?

Knock me out, never go for the kill

You're a bitch 'cause you know that it works

Oh my God, I'm in love, you're the worst

Oh my God, I'm in love, you're the worst

Oh my God, I'm in love

See you pull me to bed with your eyes

But you leave in the dark of the night

I wake up and get up from the hurt

Oh my God, I'm in love, you're the reason

I've been drinking, overthinking

I'm a fucking nervous wreck

Get so angry, I can't stand it

Look what you've done to me

Oh my God, I'm in love, you're the worst

Oh my God, I'm in love, you're the worst

And it's such a sad sight

Wanna smile but I think I might cry

Oh my God, I'm in love, you're the worst

Is it weird that it's hitting the spot

Wanna chase you around 'till I drop

Take my heart, drag it right through the dirt

Oh my God, I'm in love, you're the reason

I've been drinking, overthinking

I'm a fucking nervous wreck

Get so angry, I can't stand it

Look what you've done to me

And it's such a sad sight

Wanna smile but I think I might cry

Oh my God, I'm in love, you're the worst

Stringing out for the thrill, never go for the kill

Cause you know that I'm still yours

Pull me in with your eyes, you can't leave in the night

'Cause you know that I adore

How you don't put me first

You're a bitch cause it works

I'm in love, you're the worst

Oh my God

Memorial of the Smith Mine disaster

Smith Mine, Bearcreek, Carbon County, Montana

The Smith Mine disaster was the worst coal mining disaster in the U.S. state of Montana, and the 43rd worst in the United States, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

On February 27, 1943, at approximately 9:37 a.m., an explosion ripped through Smith Mine No. 3, a coal mine located between the towns of Bearcreek and Washoe. Since it was a Saturday, there was a short crew in the mine. Of the 77 men working that day, only three got out of the mine alive,[2] and one of the rescue workers died soon afterward. The report from the United States Bureau of Mines states that 30 of the men were killed instantly by the explosion, and the remainder died either because of injuries sustained in the explosion, or because of suffocation from the carbon monoxide and methane gas in the mine. The explosion was deep underground, and was not heard at the mouth of the mine, despite having enough power to knock a 20-ton locomotive off its tracks 0.25 mile (0.4 km) from the blast origin.

All of the bodies were removed from the mine. There is a highway plaque near the mouth of the mine, which was never reopened, and there are memorials in the cemeteries in Bearcreek and nearby Red Lodge, the county seat for Carbon County.

The explosion was attributed to a build-up of methane gas in the mine. The cause of detonation is unknown, but various reports note that men were allowed to smoke in the mine, and that fuses for blasting were lit with matches.

The site of the disaster is included in the Smith Mine Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

I wonder what Marble's shadow would look like?

Alone on a Friday night. This shot took forever and now it's time for some cereal and bed!

We got going the moment the worst of the storm passed over. But the hillside was so wet and boggy it made hard going and we were just lucky to be sheltered behind Moelwyn Mawr from the worst of the gale force winds as we climbed up from the Stwlan dam

There's no food on the table. Hal has got his face covered. Flo is in a shadow caused by something blocking the flash. As restaurant photos go, it isn't good.

In recovery I can look back and reflect.. I can remember the worst of times & how I felt. And I never ever want to EVER FORGET that feeling! Remembering that feeling.. My position I was in.. etc. is what keeps me grateful, every single day!

For some, it is easy to forget how bad it was.. once you're doing better & sit back and glamourize all of the "good times"... which were NOT good times. But your addict mind will tell you that they were great times. Perhaps because at that moment, that was a good time to you... in a horrible / hellish world that you lived in every day.

I make sure to remind myself (almost) every day.

...What do I remember? - You ask.

I remember the pain.. The wishing it would all just end.. even if that meant dying. I remember crying, and laying there so sick & dirty. I remember sleeping outside in the rain and the snow. (yes outside, under a boardwalk). Snow was fine, until it melted.. I remember that. Rain was the worst.. and even worse under the boardwalk.. because it fell in sheets (not drops).. thru the cracks. I remember getting lucky and finding a tarp with a dead cat in it.. (i'm not even joking). And it smelled so bad. But my ex decided IN NOVEMBER or DECEMBER to go clean it IN THE OCEAN.. Freezing. But he got the dead cat's guts out.. and most of the smell.. that way we had something to put over top of us when it rained.

*I can't believe I just remembered that*.

I remember people talking about, "in 2020" and I'm like, "I'll never make it past 23" "Wow I'm 23, I'll never make it to 25" etc.

Now I'm 34 with over 2 years sober. And so grateful.

I can open up.

I have to be transparent and truthful with everything.. if I ever want to reach out and really touch someone.. and show them it is possible.

People who see me now have said, "Wow, Jess... You're doing amazing, I'm so proud of you. YOU ARE PROOF!! IF YOU CAN GET OUT OF THAT LIFE, ANYONE CAN!!!"

Yes, anyone can get better.

You have to truly want it first.

& Yes, you may say, "yes I want it" but you need the drug more.

... It's not time, for you yet.

And I hope you make it thru to tomorrow.. because maybe tomorrow will be your day.

If you know someone struggling.. Know that you cannot help them. They have to want it. And help themselves.

They have to hit bottom. Or "their bottom". And really make a decision. Like I did, that one day.. when I looked at Juan.. and thought to myself, I'm killing the man that I love.

That was it.

I pray for all of you out there still struggling. I hope you know that you're not alone. And if you ever need to talk, about anything.. I'm here -just message me.

You can be addicted to anything (its a mental thing) the drug is just a symptom of the disease.... I have an addict personality.. So I can get addicted to anything.. and I take it to the extremes with everything I do.. So I have to TRY to set boundaries.. and find HEALTHY addictions.. Like photographs.. and sharing my story.

Just because you're not sitting in an alley with a needle in your arm, doesn't mean you're NOT an addict.

It all starts (for MOST OF THEM) with prescription pills FROM THEIR DOCTOR. (every single addiction you see/hear about) ALL STARTED WITH A DOCTOR VISIT!

Keep that in mind...

Alcohol.. that's a drug.

Food can be a drug.

Sex.

Gambling.

Porn.

Shopping.

Working.

I could go on and on.

So it's good to try to choose healthy addictions if you can. & If you can look at yourself and think, "wow I'm not addicted to drugs, but I'm addicted to porn & shopping".. then be very careful.

VERY CAREFUL.

Because like I said, the drug is just a symptom to the disease.

The disease of addiction.

You may feel like there is NO WAY OUT..

But believe me when I promise you,

There IS a way out. & It's amazing over here! I wake up and go to bed every day GRATEFUL! No every day is perfect, but I get to choose the way I deal with it.. instead of just using. And that's amazing.

Have a beautiful night everyone.

Red Fox

The Red Fox, Vulpes vulpes, is the largest of the true foxes and the most abundant wild member of the Carnivora, being present across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, North America and Eurasia. It is listed as least concern by the IUCN. Its range has increased alongside human expansion, having been introduced to Australia, where it is considered harmful to native mammals and bird populations. Due to its presence in Australia, it is included among the list of the "world's 100 worst invasive species".

Was there a tripod used, did I remember which lens took which pictures? There are pictures and they do tell me something, not in any science way as the pictures have been edited beyond testing the lenses. Now to go back and to redo it all for science and the opportunity to quest on a test and then to discover what is expressed rather than just confessed, that of course would be and yes it could be even should be the goal to have the testing exemplars and the variations all in regards to a hearty control.

It's the middle of February, 1979, one of the worst winters Chicago had ever experienced. I'm in the gritty East Side of Chicago, the skies are a dull gray, it's cold, and my camera is loaded with that rotten Ektachrome 400. But nothing is going to stop me from shooting a copy of my favorite EMD switcher, the SW1. At least, the engineer is giving me a nice wave as the Chicago, West Pullman, & Southern 39 crosses the street near the engine terminal.

Taken at Britannia Mine near Squamish.
