Welcome to the jungle

It gets worse here everyday

You learn to live like an animal

In the jungle where we play

If you got a hunger for what you see

You'll take it eventually

You can have anything you want

But you better not take it from me

Even Worse on B l a c k M a g i c

Todays challenge on www.photochallenge.org/ was "The Photographer" which I thought was cool, could get a shot of someone taken a photo but reading further it had to be a self portrait, Ok, No problem could take one with A reflection of me distorted enough so I am not recognizable, but then read further and had to be a head shot, so Hope this doesnt give anyone nightmares, but here I am, thought i would get the shot with me by a Map since I have traveled so much

Do not expect to see many or any more shots with me in them, I am much happier behind the camera

The First Cut Is The Deepest by Rod Stewart

www.youtube.com/watch?v=pr3zpqp3ypY

Lyrics:

I would have given you all of my heart

But there's someone who's torn it apart

And he's taking just all that I had

But if you want, I'll try to love again

Baby, I'll try to love again, but I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby, I know

The first cut is the deepest

But when it comes to being lucky, he's cursed

When it comes to lovin' me, he's worse

I still want you by my side

Just to help me dry the tears that I've cried

And I'm sure gonna give you a try

If you want, I'll try to love again, try

Baby, I'll try to love again, but I know, oh

The first cut is the deepest, baby, I know

The first cut is the deepest

But when it comes to being lucky, he's cursed

When it comes to lovin' me, he's worse

I still want you by my side

Just to help me dry the tears that I've cried

But I'm sure gonna give you a try

'Cause if you want, I'll try to love again

(Try to love again, try to love again)

Baby, I'll try to love again, but I know, oh

The first cut is the deepest, baby, I know

The first cut is the deepest

But when it comes to being lucky, he's cursed

When it comes to lovin' me, he's worse, oh oh

The first cut is the deepest, baby, I know

The first cut is the deepest

Try to love again

Photographing landscapes has provided me with countless opportunities to have my mind blown over the past few years. From summits in the Canadian Rockies, to countless sunrises in the Sierras to spectacular night skies in remote corners of Utah to beautiful coastlines in Oregon....so many incredible moments. Of all of these experiences, the one I endured last Friday was truly special. It was a personal triumph and one that I have literally been working toward for the past two years.

Tom Bricker was the first one to mention the Diving Board to me. I had seen the shot by Ansel Adams, of course, and had always wondered where he took that shot from, but I figured you would just...you know. Get closer. I was sure that the location must be just beyond Curry Village. What was the big deal?

The big deal is that the diving board is a location in Yosemite that cannot be reached by taking one of the major, well maintained trails. Back in Ansel's day you just took some ropes and charged up the Leconte Gully. But the gully has long been deemed unstable due to frequent rockfalls. The standard route nowadays begins on the mist trail and winds around behind Lost Lake before heading steeply straight up the side of base of Half Dome. From what we were able to gather from scouting online, this would be a 16 mile round trip hike and the word "strenuous" was being thrown around by some very hard core hikers and climbers. My heart sank as I first heard these reports. After all, the hike up the Upper Falls trail had nearly finished me off a few years before. How in the world could I expect to haul my camera gear up the Mist Trail let alone the nearly vertical sections of this crazy trail to the foot of Half Dome?

But I really wanted that shot. I hit the treadmill and began building up my endurance. (Of course the first night was only 10 minutes, but hey. It was a start.) I also began challenging myself with some more difficult hikes, the most recent of which was up to the Fern Ledge in Yosemite. As the Summer drew to a close, we finally had a chance of thunderstorms and the promise of a possible sunset, and I sent Tom an urgent message: Can we go for it on Friday?

So last Friday, Tom and I took off at 4 AM for Yosemite. By 10:30 AM we were taking off from the Mist Trail parking area. Man I was feeling good! No stops at all on the way up to the first bridge. I was blowing past old people and asian tourists like they were standing still. Then the REAL climbing began. By the time we made it to the top of Nevada Fall, I was wiped. But we hadn't started the tough section yet. Tom and I had found a short cut up from Emerald Pool and we had a GPS map with us on Gaia. We were all set. What could go wrong?

So up we went.

The trip from Emerald Pool to the regular bush trail junction was easily the hardest climbing I've ever done. The nearly 30 pounds on my back turned out to be a huge mistake as I nearly gave up several times. Between the steep terrain and the bushwhacking, I was toast. When we hit the junction, things only got worse. I was having to stop almost every 100 feet and poor Tom just sat there waiting for me. After clawing my way up another 700 feet or so, I finally collapsed, unable to continue. I told Tom to head up without me, but he refused. After a long break, it finally hit me: I could dump whatever I wasn't going to use at the top and grab it on the way down! So out came my 24-70 lens (way too hazy for a valley shot), the tripod, almost all of my food, two jackets and over a liter of water. I dropped by stuff in a neat little pile behind a tree reminding myself that it would be a bad idea to forget those items on the way down.

Suddenly the backpack was WAY lighter and even though it hurt, I continued to force my way up. For the final 500 feet, I hung back and sent Tom up ahead. After another 1/2 hour break, I lurched back onto my feet and with the soundtrack of Rocky playing in my head, I charged up the last 500 feet to the Diving Board...some EIGHT hours after leaving the parking lot.

The view was absolutely spectacular as Half Dome rose far more majestically than I could have ever imagined. Although we didn't get quite the epic sunset we were hoping for, we did get some color during the last few minutes, just enough to give some atmosphere. A goal I had set two years prior had just been achieved. I had made it all the way to the diving board!

Our smiles began to fade as it dawned on us that it was getting dark in a real hurry and my car was still 8 miles away. There would be no "short cut" on the way down as we were pretty sure we would not survive a hike back down the sketchy ravine we had just clambered up. So down we went on the long, normal route around past Lost Lake. About 45 minutes later, I said something like "Hey Tom....where's my stuff?" Both of us were convinced that it must still be below us, so we plowed on. After we had gone another 1/2 hour or so, it dawned on us that we must have passed it. We were both beyond exhausted and nearly out of water. But Tom, being the hero that he is, charged back up to look for it. But didn't find it. He had a quarter of a liter of water left and I had maybe a half. I wasn't even sure if I could make the hike out, so I took a deep breath and told Tom we just needed to leave my lens...and all of my other stuff up there, which would have been roughly $2500 to replace.

Ouch.

Okay...this is taking way to long. I'll skip to the end.

After we passed Lost Lake on the way down, we found water in a creek and used my filter to keep from dying on the way back. Tom made it back to the car around 2:30 AM and very kindly drove the car around to the trailhead as I had some severe blisters. I didn't make it back to the trailhead until 3:30 AM.

Fast forward to last Monday when I drove back to Yosemite to find my stuff. I stayed overnight in El Portal and set off the next morning, this time without the 30 pounds taking only water and food. I left at 4 AM and by 8 AM I found my stuff exactly where I had left it! I made it up there in HALF the time! My lens and gear were undamaged and I breathed a huge sigh of relief before heading back down.

For those of you who might be interested taking this hike, I'll have much more details for you including maps, etc on my blog in the very near future. Sorry for the ridiculously long story and THANK YOU for reading the whole thing if you are still with me! The Diving Board was truly a once in a lifetime trip for me....at least for now. I MIGHT try it again, but if I do, it will be with MUCH less gear and more water!

I quite like the green colours surrounding the grebe in this photo, but , at the same time it is a reminder that many of our once pristine lakes are changing for the worse. Although a lot of the green here is reflection from a oak woodland behind, unfortunately some of it is the water itself. Algae and duckweed can be seen and is a clear indicator of enrichment -“Eutrophication” where the nutrients accumulate in a body of water. This results in an increase of microorganisms causing algal blooms and bacterial growth and depletion of dissolved oxygen etc. with

environmental degradation.

Fertiliser runoff from farming and sewage pollution are the main causes. This change in the water body will affect the whole food chain and this Grebe sits very near the top of this food chain. So , yes I quite like the the effect in this photo but at the same time it is, as I said, for me, a reminder.

Thank you for having a look at my photos. Comments or faves are very welcome and much appreciated.

One from an evening on Plymouth Hoe, Smeaton's Tower is Plymouth's most famous landmark. I must have taken hundreds of shots of the lighthouse in the past but I really liked the way the evening sun was giving it a glow, although I think it really needs a bit of TLC and a paint job, it's looking a bit worse for wear at the minute.

The original tower was the third of four famous lighthouses to have been built to mark the dangerous Eddystone Reef, a treacherous group of rocks that lie some 14 miles south-west of Plymouth. Designed by Yorkshire man, John Smeaton it was in service from 1759 to 1882.

Smeaton’s robust tower set the pattern for a new era of lighthouse construction. However, by the mid-nineteenth century, its days were numbered. The sea was undermining the rock that the lighthouse stood on and although technical improvements had been made in lighting methods, it was too small to contain the latest machinery.

The upper part of the lighthouse was taken down, brought ashore and rebuilt on a new granite base, it Opened on Plymouth Hoe in September 1884 as a tourist attraction.

Closing out my photos taken last week is this fellow, for better or worse.

The Heddal Stave church (www.flickr.com/photos/115540984@N02/30679417426/) is one of the biggest stav churches in Norway, and dates back from the 13th century. It has been restorated several times, and not always in the correct manner. But this sanctuary part is IMO quite nice, and in a way gives you the feeling stepping back in time! It was the first time I had to use an ISO setting of 2500. Normally I would never do that, because it is not the strongest point of Sony camera's. But I had no choice, it was almost dark inside and I didn't bring my tripod with me.

With some help of Lightroom and different denoise filters I was able to come up with this. It could have been worse.

Lovely valleys, bare mountains and cold winds, snow packs, glaciers, beautiful lakes, and then there are the enchanting fjords that never stop to amaze. The most beautiful country of Europe, for me no doubt about that, with only one minor aspect, which is the weather. During my month of traveling I only had 4 really nice days, the rest of the time clouds, rain, and very changeable! Still no regret, and I will go back to make even more than the 3500 pictures that I took this time.

When you try your best, but you don't succeed

When you get what you want, but not what you need

When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep

Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face

When you lose something you can't replace

When you love someone, but it goes to waste

Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home

And ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below

When you're too in love to let it go

But if you never try, you'll never know

Just what you're worth

Lights will guide you home

And ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down your face

When you lose something you cannot replace

Tears stream down your face, and I

Tears stream down your face

I promise you I will learn from my mistakes

Tears stream down your face, and I

Lights will guide you home

And ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you

It was getting late and I was getting tired. Sonia was getting worse so I had to keep going though. I had to figure out what was going on. So I kept all night digging and searching. Following that lead Sonia gave me before she would pass out, I did some research on the ship we were traveling on that day. Turns out that this ship had a history and a dark past. The story goes like this...

While they were building it, the chief engineer who had designed the hull, brought his wife and kids one day, to see the big boat, daddy was building. They toured the shipyard and then they went up the ship. He wanted to show them every little detail. After hours of going through every corner of that ship, they decided to take a rest. That's when someone from the crew called for his help. Something had came up in deck C, so he had to leave them for a short while. And then it happened.

Word is, the kids while playing and running around, asked their mom to take a photo of them in that ship. So she reached for the camera and tried to focus on them while they were doing all their crazy posing and laughing stuff, fooling around to tease their mom. She tried to back step a little and that's when she tripped over some uncovered pipes running through the floor. She lost her balance and fell two stories down. Rumor has it, that the chief engineer never set foot on that ship ever again after his tragic loss. After the ship was finished he vanished and no one seen him again since to this very day. Through time, many stories were told about the ship being haunted by the spirit of that woman. Others claimed they've seen a ghost. Well I'm not one to believe in ghosts, but I had to be open minded for Sonia...

Thinking of this tragic story and trying to make connections, I kept digging through Sonia's archive. I had to see where she's been, if I were to help her in any way. After hours I came up with this photo which was right after going down to the locked deck. Apparently she had found a way to sneak in and go further down, deeper into the belly of the ship. She had to be really scared or in despair. For I went there myself while searching for her that night and couldn't find a way in. Everything was locked. Somehow she found a way through and while there, she took a picture so she would not get lost. I have to give her credit for that, for it's not easy to think clearly under pressure, especially when you 're being hunted! And now I know for certain she was, for that shadow on the floor was not hers...

The wonderful Parque de las Leyendas in Lima is something you shouldn't miss when you visit Peru's capital. It's one of the most interesting 'Zoos' I've ever visited. The 'animal' part is immaculately clean, and though it hasn't got many varieties of beasts, they seem very well taken care of. The Botanical Garden is devoted especially to a great collection of pine trees, agaves, bromeliads and the like.

But perhaps most intriguing is that this place is set up within archaeololgical ruins of the Maranga Civilisation. It lasted from about 600 BCE to around 1500 CE and the Inca Culture displaced by the Spanish. There's lots to see and a small but exquisite museum about the finds gives really fine information (but if you don't know Spanish you'll have a diffiult time; the photos and diagrams, though, are easy to understand).

Of course, the adobe and mud ruins are quite the worse for wear, much like the wings of our Carpenter Bee.

Happy Easter everyone. I thought this might be an uplifting song for Easter morning in the light of the challenges our world faces right now - continuing COVID, the war in Ukraine threatening to get even worse and difficult economic times. There is a small explanation of what the song is about at the end of the lyrics. The shot was taken at Bribie Island in SE Queensland. The link will take you to the youtube video. This song was used as the closing theme in the very funny movie "Bridesmaids" which also had some great messages.

Hold On Lyrics (With thanks to Genius)

I know this pain (I know this pain)

Why do you lock yourself up in these chains?

No one can change your life except for you

Don't ever let anyone step all over you

Just open your heart and your mind

Is it really fair to feel this way inside?

Someday, somebody's gonna make you wanna

Turn around and say goodbye

Until then, baby, are you gonna let them

Hold you down and make you cry?

Don't you know?

Don't you know things can change?

Things'll go your way

If you hold on for one more day

Can you hold on for one more day?

Things'll go your way

Hold on for one more day

You could sustain

Or are you comfortable with the pain?

You've got no one to blame for your unhappiness

You got yourself into your own mess

Lettin' your worries pass you by

Don't you think it's worth your time

To change your mind?

Ooh, no

Someday, somebody's gonna make you wanna

Turn around and say goodbye

Until then, baby, are you gonna let them

Hold you down and make you cry?

Don't you know?

Don't you know things can change?

Things'll go your way

If you hold on for one more day

Can you hold on for one more day?

Things'll go your way

Hold on for one more day

I know that there is pain

But you hold on for one more day and

Break free from the chains

Yeah, I know that there is pain

But you hold on for one more day and you

Break free, break from the chains

Someday, somebody's gonna make you wanna

Turn around and say goodbye

Until then, baby, are you gonna let them

Hold you down and make you cry?

Don't you know?

Don't you know things can change?

Things'll go your way

If you hold on for one more day, yeah

If you hold on

Don't you know things can change?

Things'll go your way

If you hold on for one more day

If you hold on

Can you hold on?

Hold on, baby

Won't you tell me now?

Hold on for one more day 'cause

It's gonna go your way

Don't you know things can change?

Things'll go your way

If you hold on for one more day, yeah

Can't you change it this time?

Thanks to Genius for the Lyrics.
