Rijksmonument Waterloopbos Flevoland is a beautiful and interesting forest in Noordoostpolder of the Netherlands in which the former Waterloopkundig Laboratorium (WL) (1951-1996) was established. Since 2016 this site is a national monument for the period after WOII.

The Waterloopkundig Laboratorium (the official name of the Delft Hydraulics laboratory) was established for hydraulic research in the Netherlands. It had two laboratories at its disposal, viz. the laboratory at Delft and after WWII the laboratory in Noordoostpolder. In the beginning the laboratory in Noordoostpolder was an open-air laboratory. Because of its low-lying situation, water could be guided into and out of small-scale models without pumps. The aim of the studies may either have been a hydraulic design, calibration or improvement of structures or testing of new ideas. The close cooperation between hydraulic structure designers and the researchers of the laboratory allowed the completion of complex infrastructural works like the Deltaworks, as well as large scale international projects.

Through the years, the Waterloopbos has lost its original function. Fortunately, the forest was preserved and is now being managed by Natuurmonumenten (the Dutch Nature Preservation Society). In 2016, the forest was even put on the National Monuments List. The remains of the hydraulic models are still present. Mosses, plants and trees are slowly covering over the sites that were once so valuable. You can hear water flow everywhere and special plants and animals can be found along the river banks. In fall, there are thousands of mushrooms. These elements all serve to give the Waterloopbos its fairytale ambiance.

The famous ‘Delta Flume’ has been transformed. The artists Ronald Rietveld and Erick de Lyon cut huge concrete panels of different widths from the 240 meter long Delta Flume, turning them 90 degrees. The result is a magical experience in a labyrinthine environment. Stand amazed at the way light and dark interact and enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding nature. 4 may, Dodenherdenking

Remembrance of the Dead (Dutch: Dodenherdenking) is held annually on May 4 in the Netherlands. It commemorates all civilians and members of the armed forces of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who have died in wars or peacekeeping missions since the outbreak of World War II.

Until 1961, the commemoration only related to the Dutch victims of World War II. Since 1961, the victims of other military conflicts (such as the Indonesian National Revolution in Indonesia) and peacekeeping missions (such as in Lebanon or Bosnia) are remembered on May 4 as well.

On May 4, the Dutch hold "Dodenherdenking," Remembrance of the Dead for the people who fought and died during World War II and in wars in general. There are remembrance gatherings all over cities and in the country, the better-known at the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam and at the Waalsdorpervlakte in the dunes near The Hague, one of the infamous Nazi execution places. Throughout the country, two minutes of silence are observed at 8 p.m.

5 may, Liberation Day

In the Netherlands, Liberation Day (Dutch: Bevrijdingsdag) is celebrated each year on May 5th to mark the end of the occupation by Nazi Germany during World War II.

On May 5, Dutch people celebrate the liberation of the nation from the German occupation of 1940 to 1945.

Titus Leeser; Mariniersmonument (1963)

Titus Leeser; Marine Monument (1963)

This is a classic monument honoring the Marines, exuding courage and fighting spirit. The bronze statue by Titus Leeser commemorates the wounded Rotterdam Marines who successfully defended the Maas bridges. These formed a vital link between the south of the city and the city center. Between 1823 and 1940, the Marine barracks were located on Oostplein, in the former arsenal of the Admiralty of Rotterdam. The statue stands with its back to the river and looks in the direction of the barracks, which were bombed in May 1940. The work was unveiled in 1963 by Prince Bernard, and an annual Marine Corps commemoration ceremony is held there. The pedestal bears the coat of arms with the motto "Qua Patet Orbis, 1665." The wall surrounding the memorial also lists other achievements from the history of the Marine Corps, such as the Four Days' Battle of Chatham in 1666, the Dutch East Indies, Korea, Cambodia, and Uruzgan. Above the nearby metro entrance is the preserved side gate of the barracks. The Marine Corps Monument was initiated by the Marine Corps Foundation.

2019 marks 75 years since Operation Market Garden took place. At Ede, a lawn has been set up as a temporary airport as it was in 1944. Various historical warbirds, including the Westland Lysander, various Mustangs, Hurricanes and Spitfires and a Buchon 109 were present. The B-25 of the KLuHV and B-17 Sally B would also participate, but both were unfortunately unable to attend. The weather during this day was beautiful with a lot of sun. Unfortunately just on the wrong side, which meant that a lot had to be photographed against the light. But nevertheless a beautiful air show where we will be present if it is repeated again.

Already 70 years ago. Let's not forget

Ste-Mère-Église and John Steele

(You can see him hanging on the right side of the church tower)

On the night before D-Day (June 5–6, 1944), American soldiers of the 82nd Airborne parachuted into the area west of Ste-Mère-Église in successive waves. The town had been the target of an aerial attack and a stray incendiary bomb had set fire to a house east of the town square. The church bell was rung to alert the town of the emergency and townspeople turned out in large numbers to form a bucket brigade supervised by members of the German garrison. By 0100 hours, the town square was well lit and filled with German soldiers and villagers when two sticks (planeloads of paratroopers) from the 1st and 2nd battalions were dropped in error directly over the village.

The paratroopers were easy targets, and Steele was one of only a few non-casualties. His parachute was caught in one of the back pinnacles of the church tower, causing the cables on his parachute to stretch to their full length, leaving him hanging on the backside of the church to witness the carnage. The wounded paratrooper hung there limply for two hours, pretending to be dead, before the Germans took him prisoner. Steele later escaped from the Germans and rejoined his division when US troops of the 3rd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment attacked the village capturing thirty Germans and killing another eleven. For these actions and his wounds, Steele was awarded the Bronze Star for valor and the Purple Heart for being wounded in combat.

Observatorium Operatie Manna (Manna Monument) (2006)

Observatory Operation Manna (Manna Monument) (2006)

A work of art was made along the A20 near Terbregge, mainly from crash barriers. This material has created a connection between the aesthetics of the motorway on the one hand and the Terbregge residential area on the other. The work has more or less become part of the noise barrier due to the material used, creating a relationship between these two generally separate worlds. The pavilion, asphalt garden and footbridge were completed in 2001. After this, the work was given a new meaning at the initiative of concerned citizens as a memorial for the food drops at the end of the Hunger Winter in April and May 1945, which took place in the area. Since 2006, the work of art has also functioned as a memorial for this drop, called “Operation Manna”. In this way, the work automatically acquired the organic function desired by Observatory, in addition to being a connecting and observation post.

Dutch Holocaust Memorial of Names

Seventy years after the Second World War, more than 102,000 victims of the Holocaust finally have their own memorial in Amsterdam. A memorial with the names of all the Dutch Holocaust victims. This has finally provide the Netherlands with a tangible memorial where the 102,000 Jewish victims and 220 Sinti and Roma victims can be commemorated individually and collectively.

This national memorial is located in the heart of the former Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam, there where it all happened more than seventy years ago. The opening was in 2021.

The memorial consists of four Hebrew letters that make up a word that translates as ‘In memory of’. When visitors enter the memorial, they find themselves in a labyrinth of passageways flanked by two-metre-tall brick walls that convey the message ‘In memory of’. Inscribed on each of the 102,000 bricks is a name, date of birth and age of death, in such a way that the name of each victim can be touched. The walls of names support the four letters in reflective stainless steel.

Brick is a building material used throughout the Netherlands and western Europe. In combination with the highly reflective geometric forms of the steel letters, the brickwork connects Amsterdam's past and present. A narrow void at the point where the brick walls meet the metal forms makes it appear that the steel letters float, symbolizing the interruption in the history and culture of the Dutch people.

Rijnboutt Architects was the coordinating and executive architect for the Names Memorial. With its knowledge of local construction practice, it supported Studio Libeskind by detailing its wonderful design in compliance with Dutch laws and regulations.
