Tiruchchirappalli, 10 Feb 1980

The last stop on our steam bash in India in 1980 was Tiruchchirappalli, often contracted to Trichy. We rode a stopping rain from Erode the day before behind a WL 4-6-2 and spent the night before going to the shed on the 10th. We left for Sri Lanka in the afternoon, so these appear to have been taken around noon, which accounts for the challenging lighting.

Slide film had maybe 1 f/stop of range between shadows and highlights, so if you expose for the general scene, shadows were often black during the middle of the day and the closer you get to the equator, the more directly overhead the sun is a noon time, so under the running boards is frequently dark on these shots. To make things even more fun, it appears that most engines were facing north on the south side of the shed.

On the plus side, Trichy was a meter and broad gauge shed, so in addition to WPs and the less common WLs, there were YPs and YGs in abundance. It was also a good place for WW2 US power with both broad gauge AWC 2-8-0s (aka S-160s) and meter gauge MAWD (or WD) 2-8-2s present.

We had an enjoyable visit and then it was time to head for the airport, where we took an Indian Airlines Hawker Siddeley 748, a twin engine turboprop, to Colombo for a week in Sri Lanka, which we spent recovering from our marathon trip around India.

Built in 1862 by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board and transferred to Trinity House in 1973, but inactive since 1985 when it was sold into private hands and converted into a B and B. The 37 foot tall lantern room is at ground level and is attached to a 2 story castellated keepers house which resembles a castle more than a lighthouse. . The whole structure is perched on the vertical cliffs of the Great Orme, a huge limestone promontory jutting into the Irish Sea.

Located on Marine Drive, a toll road, 3 miles northwest of Llandudno.

The fog finally liftrd enough to see the lighthouse.

The lighthouse was built in 1821. The square masonry tower is 98 feet tall and painted with red and white bands. There are 3 one story keeper's cottages available for rental, although it requires a boat to get to the island, which is a nature preserve. The light signal is 5 red flashes every 15 seconds. The original Fresnel lens was removed in 2014 and replaced with an LED. The structure on the far right is the fog signal building.

The one available boat to service our tour group could only carry 7-8 passengers at one time, which resulted in 3 trips. The photos taken in the dense fog were from the first boat trip. The fog finally lifted by the time of the third boat trip.

The animated WLS TV 7 sign at State and Lake. Despite (or because of) the camera shake, I want to post this; the blurred buildings match the low resolution of the sign, enhancing the incongruity of the scene.
