The lighthouse was built in 1821. The square masonry tower is 98 feet tall and painted with red and white bands. There are 3 one story keeper's cottages available for rental, although it requires a boat to get to the island, which is a nature preserve. The light signal is 5 red flashes every 15 seconds. The original Fresnel lens was removed in 2014 and replaced with an LED.
The one available boat to service our tour group could only carry 7-8 passengers at one time, which resulted in 3 trips. The above photo taken in the dense fog was from the first boat trip. The fog finally lifted by the time of the third boat trip.
The lighthouse marks the north entrance to Cardigan Bay
Built in 1821, but inactive since 1922. This was the first of many lighthouses designed by James Walker, and has a unique design making it an architectural landmark. The round tower is 56 feet tall and rises from the center of a 2 story round keeper's house. The lighthouse was bought by a private party and converted into a Bed and Breakfast (B and B) in 1987. It was later offered for sale at one million pounds when the original buyer wished to retire, but was not sold.
Located on the west side of the river Usk where it flows into the river Severn estuary about 4 miles south of Newport.
View of the Fresnel lens.
The lighthouse was built in 1841, but the station dates to 1714 and there is evidence that a private lighthouse existed on this site in the 1660's. The octagonal masonry tower is 42 feet tall and is attached to a 1970's building that served as a lighthouse control site, but is now used to monitor helicopter traffic. The original first order beehive Fresnel lens remains in use, and the light signal is a white or red flash, depending on direction, every 5 seconds. There are 5 keeper's houses that are now available for rental.
Located on the point of St. Ann's Head in Pembrokeshire National Park, marking the entrance into Milford Haven.
There is a nearby "High" lighthouse, long since abandoned, that has the lantern room removed and replaced with an observation room that was used to monitor for German U-boats during WWII.
The building is now a B and B.
A lovely and very original looking example, currently SORN. Some from April 2021 in this upload - will get fully up to date eventually, maybe 😊
Had a good weekend away, staying in Southport and exploring the areas roundabout and managed to take 180 photos - which would not upload this evening when I plugged the camera into the pc in the usual fashion. I kept getting the message "connection error", which really isn't good when my remaining hair is white enough as it is. Thankfully a Google search led to me deleting a lot of stuff from the memory card and I could then upload my photos to the pc. I've been carrying a new memory card with me for several weeks now, constantly expecting my camera to say it's memory is full - surely it should do this rather than refuse to upload my photos to my PC?
People were also toasting their hands and their bottoms. Heat from a fire feels good on a cold night!
