The wise old owl
Sat in an oak.
The more he saw,
The less he spoke.
The less he spoke,
The more he heard.
Why can't we be like
That wise old bird?

Today's story and sketch "by me" you see Slim Whipsum, the year is
1935 in Broken Drum Indiana. Slim is in the middle of the strangest
day of his life. Slim will never forget this day, and will have flash
backs of the day he spent with this very Wise Tree.
Slims day began like any other morning, he woke up showered
brushed his teeth, kissed his wife Malena goodbye, drove his new 1935
ford touring roadster to the Dimension Two Moon Pie Drive Thru, ordered
a cup of coffee and a Pecan Moon Pie, and as he was driving to his
job at Apes Electric, Slim bit into the moon pie and suddenly he was
no longer in Broken Drum but in another dimension, a strange and silent
haunting place next to a mumbling Spirit tree, that softly told Slim
he was in the place customers of the Dimension Two Moon Pie Shop
ended up when they forgot to tip Zooelda, the Gypsy Lady at the Drive
thru window, and that if he looked up he would see the Voodoo Doll Zooelda
made in his likeness with pins poking out of it, but he was lucky and
would only be here for 24 hours, soon he would be back in line at
Dimension two, and be sure not to forget to tip Zooelda or he could
become a Spirit Oak himself.
The Spirit Tree then explained to Slim he had committed the worst offence
a Gypsy Husband could do, he forgot Zooelda's birthday forty years ago
and was turned into a Spirit Oak. The two spent the next twenty four
hours talking about his 35 Ford and the annoying Flying Saucer that
kept buzzing overhead, and in the middle of a sentence Slim was back
third in line, digging in his wallet for a tenner, until next time

I'm happy to present my second build for the Iron Forge, from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the famous scene of the Holy Grail. Choose wisely!

I was glad to see that the organizers chose the seed part wisely! It was a chalince to build, but I used the tap 15 times, for the torches, the swastika, the ashes, and of course the goblets!
After southern Ontario's first big snowfall in almost 2 years, I got my winter clothes on and went out to search for something that would look good in front of the lens. As soon as I left the back door I was spotted three bucks in the tall grass enjoying the morning sunshine so I snapped a few shots and continued through the fresh snow. As I was wandering along one of the many paths this Great Horned Owl flew right over me, landed on a nearby tree, and just watched. When he landed, his back was towards me and I got a great view of how far an owl's head can rotate without the rest of their body moving at all. I made my way around the tree as quietly as I could until there was a nice clear shot from his frontside. I put my eye to the camera and the owl posed perfectly for me. It was a great early Christmas present and I walked away with a smile on my face.
The Great Horned Owl, also known as the Tiger Owl, is a large Owl native to the Americas. It is an adaptable bird with a vast range and is the most widely distributed true owl in the Americas. Owls have spectacular binocular vision allowing them to pinpoint prey and see in low light. The eyes of Great Horned Owls are nearly as large as those of humans and are immobile within their circular bone sockets. Instead of turning their eyes, they turn their heads. Therefore, their neck must be able to turn a full 270 degrees in order to see in other directions without moving its entire body. These birds hunt at night by waiting on a high perch and swooping down on prey.

Mom
You can tell, can't you
Truly a wise woman
She sees through you
She loves you just like you are
But she is a lion at heart
She doesn't show her lion
But when you understand what has been going on in your own life...
Then you can see what she saw years ago
That is a true lion
Letting you yourself discover the imbalances without interfering
Hoping that the light finally willl shine through
What an awakening it is to see and get to know your mom in adult life, when you yourself understands a little bit more of what was going on
I'm truly blessed and I'm very thankful
An Eagle Owl is surely one of the most impressing owls - just have a look to this orange glowing eye!

I'd rather trust a countryman than a townman,
You can judge by his eyes, take a look if you can,
He'll smile through his guard,
Survival trains hard.

The three wise monkeys are a pictorial maxim, embodying the proverbial principle "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil".
The three monkeys are Mizaru, covering his eyes, who sees no evil; Kikazaru, covering his ears, who hears no evil; and Iwazaru, covering his mouth, who speaks no evil.
Lafcadio Hearn refers to them as the three mystic apes in his Glimpses of unfamiliar Japan
Making a spur of the moment decision to make the long haul up to Humboldt County, with a chance of not seeing this 'wise old owl', was a choice I will never regret. Seeing this amazing and beautiful Great Gray Owl with birding buddies Marty & Sharon is an experience we will always remember.
On our arrival it was perched on a nearby tree branch and then made it's way to it's hunting grounds on the field where there were many birders and photographers waiting and watching. What a show it did put on.
The next two days were not nearly as eventful...but what a great time we all had.
Thank you for your visit and comments.
Tavern Puzzles are reproductions of a type of puzzle traditionally forged by blacksmiths to amuse their friends at country taverns and inns. Keeping with tradition, a museum-trained blacksmith from Long Island has reproduced some of these antique designs as well as his own original designs. All the puzzles are handcrafted and individually assembled. Each puzzle is mechanical in nature; removal of the object piece does not rely on force or trickery. This one is called "Wise Guy" and is considered intermediate difficulty. Just remove the ring... I have a dozen of them, one of which I have yet to solve.
Not much call for owl cakes in these parts but fun to make.
Dummy cake covered in fondant, gumpaste decorations.
This is an image of a barred owl I found at Myakka River State Park. They are such neat birds. I had to wait forever it seemed for the owl to turn towards me. It had been looking to it's left for about half an hour. It looked me up and down and after posing for about 10 minutes longer and then flew away into the woods.

Though only two, I thought Lucy looked like a wise old soul here. In truth,
she was watching a bug circling the lamp above her.
Day 10 of summer holidays. A heatwave started today in Germany. So we decided to flee in direction of the North Sea, because there it is always a bit windy and less temperature. We visited first a small zoo near the sea side, and there I found this old wise looking turtoise. One of the oldest still existing species. What a fascinating animal..
