Minerva, the Roman name for Athena (I believe), the goddess of wisdom. There's an interesting myth about Vulcan trying to get intimate with Minerva (she was chaste, and prevented this union) that resulted in coinage being created. Here, however, she is shown holding a symbol of wisdom, the cutest owl in the universe.

I will always remember this dog. Barely a year old she had four pups in the street outside our house. She knew hardship but also how to survive. I often wondered what stories lay behind those anxious brown eyes... Wisdom can come at a price.
