In the woods, somewhere around Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, on Wednesday 31st January 2018.
About the photograph.
This is Janey. She is a well-known British model whom had been seen in various British top-shelf softcore magazines, and also around on the Internet often under the username of Juicy Janey.
I found her on the online model booking website called ModelFolio, and after a length of time exchanging messages about a possible photo-shoot, I booked her for a two-hours slot at her home. My plan was split the two hours timeslot into two parts.
The first hour of the photo-shoot was done outdoors, and it was more of a fashion themed photo-shoot, mainly focused on women’s winter style casual outfits. The woods seen in the photos were behind her home, and is what I needed for the photo-shoot.
In the photographs, she is posing in a black size 10 faux fur coat with hood, by the fashion label ETAM. Point of note: the label have the name spelt in all caps, but the name could be Etam and simply stylised as ETAM.
She is also wearing her own spotted top under the fur coat, along with her own blue jeans tucked into her below knee length black books. She also displays a floral print white scarf.
Along with the outfit, she is also carrying a golden tan coloured suede handbag, seen in few of the shots, but is mostly hidden by the way she wears the fur coat.
The photos doubles as both stand-alone photographs, as well as graphic design assets.
The stand-alone photographs are as you see here, full portraiture photographs which I would showcase online like Flickr or Instagram, or simply print them out as prints and display on the walls. Sometimes I may use them as wallpaper on my desktop computer or mobile devices.
As graphic design assets, I usually import them into my own graphic design projects, like for example when designing a fashion magazine catalogue, or a magazine article layout. I prefer to take my own photographs so I would have the full copyright and rights, rather than rely on stock photographs, for which you would have to pay fees or royalties if using someone else’s photo in your graphic design work.
Despite myself being a deaf person with speech impaired, and that Janey is a hearing person, we did work together very well, and got on well, in spite of the communications difficulties. She had remarked that it was a pleasure to work with me, and left positive review on my account on ModelFolio.
Janey was my 5th booked model, and at time of writing this article (Sept ‘25), I had worked with 9 models so far.
After the first hour with her, the second hour was more of a softcore themed indoor photo-shoot.
About the Etam fuax fur coat.
Etam was founded in 1916 by Max Lindermann, in Berlin, Germany as a stocking store.
During the 1920s and 1930s, the company opened a shop and later a factory in France. They produced and distributed various women’s wear including lingerie, using quality materials and craftmanship, and from the 1930s onwards, they expanded throughout Europe.
Over time, the brand evolved, and included swimwear in the late 1960s. Starting from the 1980s, it started collaborations with other fashion designers.
As of now, the company is still a family owned and independent company, under the parent name of The Etam Group which includes other fashion brands, with more than 1300 stores in more than 50 countries.

In the Woods somewhere in Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, on Tuesday 31st January 2018.
About this photograph.
This is Janey, a British model living in Yorkshire, England, whom I booked for a two-hours photo-shoot. The first half as outdoors, and the second half was indoors.
Here, she is modelling in a casual winter outfit. She is wearing an animal print faux fur coat from Roman Originals, in size XL, which is roughly UK dress size 20. Along with the fur coat, she is wearing her own dark colour top with white dots, her own blue jeans tucked into a pair of under-knee length, flat heeled boots. Janey is also wearing a light coloured scarf with pictures of birds all over the scarf. She is also modelling with her own tan coloured suede handbag.
She is posing and showing off the casual winter style, in some woods near her home, during a typical cold and damp English January weather. There wasn’t any snow around at that time, but there was some sunlight through the trees. The ground is not that bad, not very muddy, still good firm enough.
About the overall subject.
Roman Originals was established in Birmingham, in 1957. It started as a family owned business manufacturing ladieswear for many shops. They manufacture a wide range of outfits, including daywear, eveningwear, workwear, and outerwear. They design and manufacture various women’s outfits for all ages and of various sizes, from 10 to 22.
In 1998, the company opened their first retail shop so they would sell their own clothes, and over the years, they expanded to about 150 shops in the United Kingdom, as well as still trading with department stores.
Some years later, they renamed their company to simply known as Roman, but still trading as Roman Originals PLC.
Notes.
My camera’s internal clock was set to the wrong year and I never noticed it for maybe a couple of years. When I started to notice the year is wrong, I got around to checking and setting the correct date in my camera. The year I took those photos were in 2018, not in 2017.

Shot during a cold winter afternoon commute while practicing shutter drag techniques. I was shooting indiscriminately, simply trying to fill the SD card with motion experiments. It wasn’t until reviewing the images at home that this frame stopped me—a woman in motion, her face blurred, caught in a fleeting upward gaze, framed by a dark winter coat and a striking red scarf. An accidental portrait that feels deliberate in its emotion.

The Old Station, off the A446, near Tintern, Monmouthshire, Wales, United Kingdom. Tuesday 2nd February 2016.
The photograph.
Sally, a model booked for an outdoor photo-shoot, is seen here modelling in her own blue jeans tucked into her own flat-heeled below-knee length boots with side zippers. She is also modelling a size XL/16 Brave Soul brand leopard-print faux fur jacket with a hood. Here she is posing next to two old but restored carriages at The Old Station, Tintern, during the typical British winter.
Brave Soul.
Brave Soul is a British fashion brand established in 1972 by the company Whispering Smith, and is the UK’s largest distributor of fashion to high street shops and to online stores worldwide. It grew from a small fashion brand to a global brand offering the best of British design and street style.
Whispering Smith was founded in Manchester in 1967. It started as a family-owned business, and grown to one of the largest suppliers of young fashion. They also have two more brands, and their own wholesales warehouse.
The Old Station.
The Old Station was a former railway station near the town of Tintern, on the long since disused Wye Valley Railway line. The line was a 15 miles long railway line running between the towns of Chepstow and Monmouth in Wales. It opened in 1876, was operated by the Great Western Railway often abbreviated as GWR, until it was taken over by British Rail which then closed the line in 1964.
The rail station was bought and refurbished into a café and exhibition, it is open to the general public. Monmouthshire Country Council bought a couple of old carriages which were refurbished as gift shop, tourism information, and an exhibition. The two carriages are displayed on what is left of the old rail tracks.
The Project.
I booked Sally for a two-hours photo-shoot project, which was to be split into two parts. The first part was to be a winter fashion photography, and the second part was to be fur fetish photography. Before meeting up for the photo-shoot, I was in email communications with her and requested that she wears some casual outfit, specifically the jeans tucked into boots style, she was to bring a few change of her own tops or blouses, and that I would bring along some of the faux fur coats.
The project was to double as both a stand-alone range of photos, and as part of a graphic design work. What I mean is that the photos can be stand-alone, like just simply the photos displayed on their own, such as framed on a wall or posted online (like Flickr), or that they can be imported into some graphic design work I may be doing, like creating a fashion catalogue.
As I have been a very busy full-time single parent and carer, my photography and graphic design skills were getting rusty. Thankfully as the kids were much older and attending school, I could be able to get to try to do some work for myself, and attempt to refresh my skills, plus build up a portfolio.
I had not been able to find a suitable outdoor location, however it was Sally who lived in Wales, suggested The Old Station, near Tintern, and it was suitable for my projects.
To see some more of Sally, you can view her in this album: www.flickr.com/photos/132335712@N05/albums/72157719210845529

Near the Newport City Footbridge over the River Usk, in the city of Newport (Welsh: Casnewydd), Gwent, Wales (Cymru), United Kingdom, on Friday 29th January 2016.
Photos were taken opposite the Friars Walk Shopping Centre, and the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, next to the A4042 known as Usk Way. It is also near the University of South Wales, Newport City Campus, which can be seen in the background in a few of the photos.
About this photograph.
As well as being a photographer, I am also a graphic designer, but in both cases I’m currently out of work. At that time the above photograph was taken, I was a busy full-time single parent, so my careers were put on hold.
However, in order to ensure the I do not lose my skills, and also to keep gaining more experience, I often try to do photography or graphic design projects, while the kids were at school. This was one of the few graphic design projects I was doing.
As a graphic designer, I prefer to make an effort to take my own photos, and include them in my design works, rather than use stock images. The above photo of the model is for my own design.
The graphic design project I was doing, was to be a DVD case cover and a boxset design, for a non-existence fictional police and detective television show. This was to showcase my creative skills in designing case covers for DVDs.
The theme of the non-existence DVD was to be a police drama, the idea was a civilian woman, herself a single mother of two teenager kids, helping the police as a consultant. The idea of the story was for her to balance her life between being a single mother, struggle with dating, her work, and her role as a consultant.
So, I needed a woman in her later 40s or early 50s. That’s all I wanted, since I only thought of her character as being in that approximate age range. I never thought of what colour her hair should be, what she looks like, etc. That allowed me some flexibility with finding any models available for a photo-shoot.
Plus I wanted it to be set in a city, as the theme of the story was set in a city.
I searched on some of the model booking websites, like PurplePort, and found Lulu, whom was living in Newport, Wales, on ModelFolio. We exchanced email, mostly pre-shoot communications, and finally I booked her for a two-hours photo-shoot in Newport.
I managed to arrange for my ex-wife to pick up the kids from school on Friday, and look after them for the weekend, so that as soon as I drop of the kids, I drove to Newport, to her home. We made preparations for the outdoor photo-shoot, and her husband offered to drive us into city centre, to the location you see in the photograph.
Here, Lulu is wearing a typical women’s winter outfit. She is seen posing in a size XL animal print faux fur coat from Roman Originals.
She is also wearing her own dark blue jeans, tucked into her own brown flat-heeled knee-length boots, with full length zippers on the sides of the boots. She is also wearing a casual top under the fur coat, not seen in the photos. The weather was gloomy with light winds, hence her hair is sometimes seen flying in the wind.
She was aware from pre-shoot communications, of what the photo-shoot is all about, and I directed her to the kind of poses I wanted. I asked her to pose like a woman lost in deep thoughts, over her personal life and the investigation, which is what I hoped her pose in the photo would imply.
Despite myself being a deaf person with speech impaired, she had remarked that we had worked together well, and she also left a positive review on my account on ModelFolio, stating that I was able to give directions well.
About the Roman Originals fur coat.
Roman Originals was originally established in 1957 in Birmingham, England, United Kingdom.
It started as a family owned manufacturing business, designing and making ladieswear, for the high street shops in Britain. It grew to include evening wear, wedding outfits, smart casual day wear, work wear, and holiday wear, for the women.
The meaning of the company name was from an inspiration of Italian fabrics they used in their designs, and over the years, continue to change the styles as the fashion style changed over time, mostly for the younger customers, and try to design their fashion to fit customers of all ages.
As the company grew, by around 1990’s, they decided to open their High Street stores, and ended up with about 150 stores nationwide. They later renamed to simply Roman, but still trading as Roman Originals PLC.
About “Kimberley” Project.
Kimberley is the eponymous character of a fictional crime/police story I came up with, for a creative non-existence television show DVD cover design, as part of my ongoing graphic design training.
The main reason is about my skills in doing graphic design, and showcase my skills of designing a DVD case cover, and a DVD boxset design. When I was at college doing my graphic design training, we did not have computers because at that time, it was in the late 1980s, and the college had limited budget for new technology. I did most of my graphic design training in the traditional old fashion way, like using craft knife, masking tape, and glue a photo to a packaging design.
So, nowadays, I have been doing self-training in using computers and software, to do graphic design work, in order to gain experience. First, I started with Corel brand (i.e.: CorelDRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT.), then I switched to Adobe brand when I upgraded my computer to a new one.
You can see screen capture of the Adobe InDesign layout work I did, in one of my Albums, titled Graphic Design. or by clicking on the links here…

The above photographs of the model posing outdoors, can also serve as stand-alone photos, like showing them in my portfolio, or like showing them on Flickr.

At that time of the photo-shoot, I had an idea for a graphic design project, which was to create a non-existence fictional television series DVD case cover (or as Apple’s iTunes Store would call it “album art”) and a DVD boxset. For this, I would prefer to use my own photographs to go into my own design, rather than using stock photographs.
The idea is that the leading character, named Kimberley, would be someone juggling between her personal life at home, and her job working for the police. The plot of the stories is mainly crime or murder mystery and detective drama, with her family and relationship problems as a sub-plot.
So I asked Lulu, to pose as if the leading character is lost in thoughts on the subject of her personal problems, and of the police investigation. Lulu did a great way of posing for the kind of photographs I needed, and thankfully the gloomy damp weather seems to give a better illustration for the photos I needed.

Photographs were taken at The Old Station, Tintern, Monmouthshire, Wales, United Kingdom. 2nd of February 2016.
About the model and the shoots.
Sally was booked for a two-hours outdoors photo-shoot, on the grounds of The Old Station at Tintern. The model was posting in a casual winter style outfit. She modelled in a tan coloured faux fur jacket, bought second-hand from charity shop. She worn her own casual sweater with her own blue jeans tucked into her own brown knee-length boots. I had requested the kind of jeans-tucked-into-boots kind of outfit, and she came with the outfit good enough for my plan.
The photographs of Sally posing in the front of an old carriage, were taken at various lens length settings and myself at various distance from the subject. That’s why the size of the carriage behind her looked different from other similar shoots.
About the location.
The Old Station was a former rail station near the town of Tintern, on the long since disused Wye Valley Railway line. The long gone line was 15 miles long, between the towns of Chepstow in the south and Monmouth to the north of Tintern. It opened in 1876 and was operated by Great Western Railway (GWR) until taken over by British Rail, then closed in 1964.
The rail station was bought and refurbished into a café and exhibition, and is open to the public. Monmouthshire County Council bought a couple of old carriages, which were refurbished as gift shop, tourism information, and an exhibition. The two carriages are displayed on what’s left of the rail tracks.
If you wish to know some more about the location, simply Google “the old station tintern.”

She is seen posing in a size XL animal print faux fur coat from Roman Originals, along with her own dark blue jeans tucked into her own brown flat-heeled knee-length boots with full length zippers. She is also wearing a casual top under the fur coat, not seen in the photos. The weather was gloomy with light winds hence her hair is sometimes seen flying in the wind.
About the subject(s).
Roman Originals was originally established in 1957 in Birmingham. The family owned business started as a ladieswear manufacturing company, making various ladies outfits including daywear, eveningwear, workwear, and outerwear. They design and made women’s outfits for all ages and of various sizes from 10 to 22.
In 1998, Roman Originals opened their first retail shop, and over time, expanded to a chain of about 150 shops in the United Kingdom. They later renamed to simply Roman, but still trading as Roman Originals Plc.
Kimberley is simply a title for a fictional crime/police story I came up with, and used this as a base for a graphic design project. The project was to create a (non-existence) fictional television series DVD case cover and a DVD Boxset packaging.

While the photographs were imported into Adobe InDesign as part of the packaging design (see above links for the InDesign project), the photographs can also be used on their own, simply as stand-alone photographs for mounting on the wall, or for showing online like on Flickr.

Intro.
Back in the late 1980s, I trained in traditional graphic design while at college. When I said “traditional” I meant the old fashion way, using pens, pencils, craft knife, cutting mat, masking tapes, and working on paper, as opposite to digital graphic design which is done on computer. Starting from the middle 1990s, I got myself a Windows based PC, then bought a graphic design software, and started self-training.
Few years ago, I upgraded my computer (4th upgrade), and changed my graphic design software to Adobe brand. While I was a full-time single parent, I continue to keep my skills refreshed by doing my own graphic design projects, mainly to keep my portfolio updated in case I get a chance for an interview.
This is one of the graphic design project ideas I came up with in 2016. A DVD case cover and DVD Boxset based on a (non-existence) television series.
I came up with an idea of a detective/crime drama, centred on a leading female character, and using an eponymous title.
An eponymous title means of a person giving their name to something. For example, a character’s name, often just a single name, used as a title for a series. Examples…
Bergerac. British 1980s police detective series.
Castle. American 2010s crime/comedy series.
Lewis. British spin-off from Inspector Morse.
MacGyver. American 1980s television series.
Columbo. American 1970s-2000s detective series.
I used Kimberley which is a surname in the English language, and it is a variant of Kimberly. Point of note: It is also a given name as well as a surname. I used the variant Kimberley as a surname instead of the more common Kimberly as first name.
The idea of the plot is a single mother of two teenagers, juggling between her personal life at home and her job working for the police. The idea for the cover design is the leading character out and about, on her own, as if she’s lost in thoughts, possibility thinking of the police investigation and also of her personal problems.
How was that done?
I booked Lulu, a model based in Newport, Wales, United Kingdom, for an outdoors photo-shoot, as part of the graphic design project. When setting up the photo-shoot, I explained to Lulu what my project is about. It helps if I give her some background on what it is about, and explain to her what I want her to do, so that she would then know what kind of posing to do. She posed in different ways that are what I hoped for.

After getting the photos I needed, the next step was to find out the dimensions of a DVD case cover and a DVD Boxset case. Usually the case cover is much easier to work with, but the Boxset dimensions is bit tricky. When I’ve got the dimensions, I then started Adobe InDesign, set up a new spread,* and created the layout.
*We call it a spread, not a page.
For the case cover, the layout can fit on a single A4 spread. But for the box layout, it needed to be done on A3 spread. The case cover layout is often of the right dimensions on the first go (if you get it right the first time), but the box dimensions needs to be double-checked. This was done by printing out just the layout, cut it out, place it on a box, check if it fits or not. It was a simple case of adjust the layout’s dimensions in the software.
Then I imported the original photograph into Adobe Photoshop and saved it as a .PSD file, then imported the .PDS file into the main layout in the .INDD file. Next task was to simply just type the words on it, add any other graphics or other photographs, and make any adjustments to the objects.
The above image shows a screen capture of the completed layout design in the InDesign workspace, and the inset shows a photo of the finished work.
