Decided it was time to get outside for a solitary walk with Nature. Sometimes that’s not easy to do in my neck of the woods. But on this occasion, it was just me and my Egret.

The elegant Great Egret is a dazzling sight in many a North American wetland. Slightly smaller and more svelte than a Great Blue Heron, these are still large birds with impressive wingspans.

They hunt in classic heron fashion, standing immobile or wading through wetlands to capture fish with a deadly jab of their yellow bill. Great Egrets were hunted nearly to extinction for their plumes in the late nineteenth century, sparking conservation movements and some of the first laws to protect birds.

Great Egrets fly slowly but powerfully: with just two wingbeats per second their cruising speed is around 25 miles an hour.

Though it mainly hunts while wading, the Great Egret occasionally swims to capture prey or hovers (somewhat laboriously) over the water and dips for fish.

The oldest known Great Egret was 22 years, 10 months old and was banded in Ohio.

Will you just hold still for a second!! And I swear the Nuthatch would look at you and smile and would be off to the next branch about the time you achieved focus!! These guys are so hyperactive flying from trunk to trunk of trees and running up and down the trunks looking in the bark, in search of insects!! The light and the bubbles of gold left a sparkling trail along the fringes of where the tide had been, begging me to follow.

No-one else saw. My lens did though. Always drawing my attention to the little details.

I think I have been in lockdown too long and my mind is wandering and falling to sentiment

I was given strict instructions I was not allowed to stand on the rocks at all to take images. The tide was coming in and huge waves were crashing through the cavern and over the rocks. You wouldn't know it from this long exposure though.

This image was taken from a ledge on the side of the rock-face. The sea spray was so bad that I only got few usable images.

Note to self. When it is that wild and windy, it really isn't worth the effort. Try as I might I could not get the filters clean between images.

I am starting my field survey season and already have way too much work. I will be cutting back posting and commenting to a few times a week to try to manage my time. In the words fellow photographer Leon-"please don't desert me'!
