The Traveling Wilburys - End of the line-

A good spot from where to imagine what could have been, or what could be.

Roy Orbison/Not Alone, as recorded by Roy with the Traveling Wilburys:

Antelope Island, Utah, USA. Buffalo Point trail, looking north. I have taken several shots from several angles of this subject, haven't quite been satisfied with any of them, but this comes closest to what I want. Not far from the paved parking area, as you follow the trail to the summit of the landform.

RAW processed in View NX2, additional adjustments to sharpening, white balance and brightness added in Corel Paintshop Pro.

The image is winter trees reflected upside down in a puddle along Sheboygan's South Pier Drive. The title comes from the lyrics of a Traveling Wilburys song.

A Heartbreaker and a Traveling Wilbury, you've left us too soon.

Tom Petty October 20, 1950 – October 2, 2017 RIP.

I loved him, his music.

Not one of Petty's song but here he is singing Needles and Pins* with Stevie Nicks from 1986.

Nuthatch contemplating how to neutralize that device hanging from my neck. Apparently he's ruled out levitation for this round.

Taken from the Lisburn Road, looking towards the City Hospital stop.

One of my favorite music groups. I mean ELO is my all time favorite music group, and Jeff Lynne from ELO is here. The man I am named after his here. And my favorite Beatle is here.

From L to R: Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, George Harrison, and Roy Orbison.

Since I know a lot of you probaly have no idea who these guys are or what they look like (Shame on you), here is a picture of them: fanart.tv/api/download.php?type=download&image=41370&...

Keep in mind that the outfits I have them in this photo do not match the reference on purpose.

The Traveling Wilburys - End Of The Line

youtu.be/UMVjToYOjbM

Well, it's alright, ridin' around in the breeze

Well, it's alright, if you live the life you please

Well, it's alright, doin' the best you can

Well, it's alright, as long as you lend a hand

You can sit around and wait for the phone to ring (at the end of the line)

Waiting for someone to tell you everything (at the end of the line)

Sit around and wonder what tomorrow will bring (at the end of the line)

Maybe a diamond ring

Well, it's alright, even if they say you're wrong

Well, it's alright, sometimes you gotta be strong

Well, it's alright, as long as you got somewhere to lay

Well, it's alright, everyday is judgment day

Maybe somewhere down the road a ways (at the end of the line)

You'll think of me and wonder where I am these days (at the end of the line)

Maybe somewhere down the road when somebody plays (at the end of the line)

Purple Haze

Well, it's alright, even when push comes to shove

Well, it's alright, if you got someone to love

Well, it's alright, everything'll work out fine

Well, it's alright, we're going to the end of the line

Don't have to be ashamed of the car I drive (at the end of the line)

I'm just glad to be here, happy to be alive (at the end of the line)

And it don't matter if you're by my side (at the end of the line)

I'm satisfied

Well, it's alright, even if you're old and grey

Well, it's alright, you still got something to say

Well, it's alright, remember to live and let live

Well, it's alright, the best you can do is forgive

Well, it's alright (alright), riding around on the breeze

Well, it's alright (alright), if you live the life you please

Well, it's alright, even if the sun don't shine

Well, it's alright (alright), we're going to the end of the line

As the song plays out by the Traveling Wilburys, this song just popped into my head whilst on a hike around Lands End, kinda ironic really.

Let’s hope it isn’t the end of the line for this fine old arrow neon but its safer shootin’ it here rather than in front of the crack house where it formally stood…

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2016: Bob Dylan

The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2016 is awarded to Bob Dylan "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition".

Photo taken at the Bob Dylan Exhibition "Mood Swings", Halcyon Gallery, New Bond Street, December 2013. I think the original photo was credited to His Bobness himself.

From the Svenska Akademien / The Swedish Academy:

Bio-bibliographical Notes:

Bob Dylan was born on May 24, 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota. He grew up in a Jewish middle-class family in the city of Hibbing. As a teenager he played in various bands and with time his interest in music deepened, with a particular passion for American folk music and blues. One of his idols was the folk singer Woody Guthrie. He was also influenced by the early authors of the Beat Generation, as well as by modernist poets.

Dylan moved to New York in 1961 and began to perform in clubs and cafés in Greenwich Village. He met the record producer John Hammond with whom he signed a contract for his debut album, called Bob Dylan (1962). In the following years he recorded a number of albums which have had a tremendous impact on popular music: Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited in 1965, Blonde On Blonde in 1966 and Blood On The Tracks in 1975. His productivity continued in the following decades, resulting in masterpieces like Oh Mercy (1989), Time Out Of Mind (1997) and Modern Times (2006).

Dylan’s tours in 1965 and 1966 attracted a lot of attention. For a period he was accompanied by film maker D. A. Pennebaker, who documented life around the stage in what would come to be the movie Dont Look Back (1967). Dylan has recorded a large number of albums revolving around topics like the social conditions of man, religion, politics and love. The lyrics have continuously been published in new editions, under the title Lyrics. As an artist, he is strikingly versatile; he has been active as painter, actor and scriptwriter.

Besides his large production of albums, Dylan has published experimental work like Tarantula (1971) and the collection Writings and Drawings (1973). He has written the autobiography Chronicles (2004), which depicts memories from the early years in New York and which provides glimpses of his life at the center of popular culture. Since the late 1980s, Bob Dylan has toured persistently, an undertaking called the “Never-Ending Tour”. Dylan has the status of an icon. His influence on contemporary music is profound, and he is the object of a steady stream of secondary literature.

Title is a line from a 'Travelling Wilbury's song

We're here visiting the Rail and railways world wide group

End of the line

Traveling Wilburys

The song was used over the end credits of the final episode of the British sitcom One Foot in the Grave and the American comedy Parks and Recreation.

A version sung by actor/singer Dennis Waterman was used as the theme tune for the pilot of the BBC production New Tricks

Imachar shore on the west coast of Arran is quite a fascinating and otherworldy place with some great pools and rock formations at low tide. Well, they're still fascinating at high tide, you just need a snorkel, and maybe a dry suit, this is Scotland after all! It reminds me of the scenery in The Chronicles of Riddick and I was half expecting Vin Diesel to spring out from behind a rock.

If rocks and all things geological hold no interest for you, then if you're from the south, go back to reading your Economist with your chamomile tea, croissant and finest Fortnum and Mason preserve, however for all my northern brethren, well, it's back to the Ferret Fanciers Fortnightly and builders tea and slap a bit more lard on your balm cake whilst you're at it.

Don't you just hate stereotypes!

The boring bit.

Arran has often been referred to as the Highlands in miniature and both from a visual and a geological perspective this is true. The Dalradian schists; part of the Dalradian supergroup of Scotland and Ireland which are found on Imachar shore also occur in the Highlands and the Great Glen. They were formed during the Lower Cambrian period about 540million years ago which to put into perspective is around the same time The Stones were recording their aptly titled first album 'The Rolling Stones'.

Dalradian rocks found on Arran were deposited on the bottom of a deep Ocean as sedimentary rocks quaintly termed greywackes. I think one of the appeals of geology is the terminology; who thinks up names like schists, pillow lava, gneiss, clints and grykes?

The 'Dalradian Supergroup', contempories of 'The Traveling Wilburys' have Jim Kerr, Stuart Adamson, Dolores O’Riordan and The Edge as members, they just haven't released anything yet.

So in keeping with the Celtic connection, here's some music.

Somebody mentioned corvids to me today. By that time I already had this picture in my camera but did not know what else it contained. This all came to light once I transferred everything to my computer. One of these days I will start shooting butterflies to see if they really do cause tornados.

The autumnal waterfalls continue. Well, not much of a waterfall here, but close enough.

Has anyone else noticed that when traversing a stream like this by leaping from rock to rock, that no matter which route you choose there will always be that one boulder whose sole purpose is to surprisingly pivot when you land on it and scare the you-know-what out of you? Just sayin'...

Nobody's Child (song)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Nobody's Child"

"Nobody's Child" is a song written by Cy Coben and Mel Foree. It was first recorded by Hank Snow in 1949 and it became one of his standards, although it did not chart for him. The song has been covered a number of times in the UK; it was on Lonnie Donegan's first album in 1956 (which went to #2 as an album in the UK), it was covered by Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers (The Beatles) in 1961 in Hamburg, and in 1969 Karen Young took the song to #6 on the UK charts and used it as the title track on her album. In 1969 Hank Williams Jr. did a version of it that made it to #46 on the US Country charts. The Traveling Wilburys' 1990 version made it to #44 on the UK charts.

I'm nobody's child, I'm nobody's child, I'm like a flower, just growing wild,

No Mummy's kisses, and no Daddy's smiles. Nobody wants me,

I'm nobody's child.

No Mommy's arms to hold me, and soothe me when I cry,

Sometimes I feel so lonesome, I wish that I would die.

I'd walk the streets of Heaven, where all the eyes could see,

And just like all the other kids, there'd be a home for me,

"DO NOT ENTER"

*This is a 1960 Kodak slide that was created by Les who is 91 years old and is now in Hospice preparing to enter the other side of the curtain and the light.of truth and innocence. The sienna color is a natural light reflection from a close by stain glass window. It represents The blood of Christ. I purposely positioned to bring it into the composition. No tripod... just hand held trying to get the best focus and POV in the cramped area where the sienna color reflection momentarily existed.

455841 and 455835 depart from Hove and take the line round to Preston Park, working 1Z57 12.55 Brighton - Charing Cross (via Hove, Preston Park, Brighton and Lewes), the third leg of the Southern class 455 farewell charity tour "The Metro Marauder". The train is approaching Wilbury Villas road bridge. [Pole, 4/6 sections (~5.4m)]

The full route of the tour, for which the Branch Line Society was booking agent, was:

1Z55 09.02 London Victoria - Billingshurst Signal T1430 via Clapham Junction, Streatham Reversible, Mitcham Junction, Epsom, Dorking;

1Z56 10.25 Billingshurst Signal T1430 - Brighton via Three Bridge (reverse) and Hove (reverse);

1Z57 12.55 Brighton - Charing Cross via Hove (reverse), Preston Park (reverse), Lovers Walk Carriage Road, Brighton (platform 6 - reverse). Lewes Signal LW58 (reverse), Haywards Heath, Quarry Line, Norwood Junction and Brockley;

1Z58 15.31 Charing Cross - Blackfriars via Peckham Rye, Tulse Hill, Balham, Clapham Junction and Wandsworth Road;

1Z59 16.42 Blackfriars - Sevenoaks via Peckham Rye, Catford and Swanley;

1Z60 17.38 Sevenoaks - London Victoria via Orpington, Catford and Stewarts Lane.

Having made it to Hove just in time to photograph the previous leg of this tour setting off for Brighton, photographing it from the bridge in this shot, I then looked at other possible angles in the area and reckoned there was plenty of time to get between two locations while the train reversed at Preston Park.

I used the pole to get over the lower branches of a tree.

This was us at our peak. Our Sgt. Pepper, our Use Your Illusion. In the weird, wild world of the Internet, circa 2009, we were riding high on a bit of Tumblr fame, a bit of Flickr popularity, and the notion that if you put four photographers together, despite the inherent challenges, you'd end up having a pretty good time.

We did group shoots, we hosted a barbecue at the park, we had a Tumblr blog, we were like the Traveling Wilburys of amateur internet photography.

We ran all over LA, shooting on rooftops, in the rain, in tunnels, at abandoned ranches. I'd met Sam while working at an office, I'd met Laura and Ian right here on Flickr, all of us hobbyists (though Laura would soon find her way to becoming a professional). All of us as into hanging out together as we were taking pictures.

And the dreaded elephant in the room? Competition? All that did was propel us forward. When someone else is taking the shot you were thinking of, you've got to go farther, look more deeply at your environment, get even more creative. It was exhilarating.

Looking back, that was the real gift. Being able to hang out with your friends, make art, and never have it sour. We never fought about stealing shots, or stealing set-ups, or hogging models. It was all about the good time. Our big bbq, I barely took any pictures. Just enjoyed hanging out with my friends.

Talking with Ian last night, we tried to figure out why we stopped. And it wasn't any one thing, no fights, no blow-ups. Just life. I got a long-term set medic gig. He had a baby. People's jobs changed, people's priorities changed. After our big Wetshirts BBQ, we found our time and attention increasingly pulled in different directions. We all still hung out, but never got together for another group shoot after the middle of 2010.

And then people moved. People fought. More people moved. Life just kept on rolling on.

JUST LIKE THE TRAVELING WILBURYS.

Well it's all right,

Riding around on the breeze,

Well it's all right,

If you live the life you please,

Well it's all right,

Even if the sun don't shine,

Well it's all right,

We're going to the end of the line
