My first car had whitewall tires (and a white vinyl roof), but those are now a thing of the past. I was glad to see this old Packard with its shiny rims and clean whitewall tires at the “Bent Axles” 39th Annual July Car Show in Old Orcutt.
Including some new whitewall tyres!

The Impala finally has its whitewall tires. Now there is a wheel with a whitewall tire that spins and steers. For slot purposes it seems to be better to turn the black tire inside out so that there is a profile.
Whitewall tires or white sidewall tires are tires having a stripe or entire sidewall of white rubber.
Early automobile tires were made of pure natural rubber with various chemicals mixed into the tread compounds to make them wear better. The best of these was zinc oxide, a pure white substance that increased traction and also made the entire tire white. However, the white rubber did not offer sufficient endurance, so carbon black was added to the rubber and greatly increasing tread life. Using carbon black only in the tread produced tires with inner and outer sidewalls of white rubber. Later, entirely black tires became available, the still extant white sidewalls being covered with a somewhat thin, black colored layer of rubber.

Whitewall tyres eh? So whilst we are on the subject of dirty back-ends, this came into Moor Lane one really foul morning. It wouldnt have left the depot like that but due to the long, busy and fast nature of the 400 Bolton Ashton/Stockport Trans-Lancs Express combined with the appalling, even for Manchester, weather this morning, this was the result. The picture has not been edited, only watermarked. At least the driver wouldnt get booked for speeding!
