Austerity tank WD 190 departs Castle Hedingham at the Colne Valley Railway. Historically there was never a station on this site, all the buildings have been saved from elsewhere over the years. The signal box behind the locomotive came from Cressing Station, on the branch line to Braintree.
The first recorded hill camp at Troodos was in 1878 when the British soldiers ordinarily stationed on the coast withdrew to the mountains to recover from the difficult hot weather conditions at sea level. The camp developed throughout the years, evolving from a canvas only encampment to more permanent structures being constructed. Only a few years after the troops began encamping at Troodos, the Cyprus government (reluctantly) granted the War Department a parcel of land to use. The exact dates of these boundary stones are currently unknown, but the smaller stones, with faint markings, I believe to be from the first few years of this occupation (pre-1900).
