Wat Arun (Thai: วัดอรุณ, Temple of the Dawn) is a buddhist temple (wat) in Bangkok, Thailand. The temple is located in the Bangkok Yai district, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. The full name of the temple is Wat Arunratchawararam Ratchaworamahavihara (วัดอรุณราชวรารามราชวรมหาวิหาร).
The temple was built in the days of Thailand's ancient capital of Ayutthaya and originally known as Wat Makok (The Olive Temple).
The later King Rama II. changed the name to Wat Arunratchatharam. He restored the temple and enlarged the central prang. The work was finished by King Rama III. King Rama IV gave the temple the present name Wat Arunratchawararam.
As a sign of changing times, Wat Arun officially ordained its first westerner in 2005. Sean Patrick from America.

Prepare to have your mind blown!
This is by far the most amazing temple I have visited in Thailand. If you are in Chiang Mai, add it to your "must see" list. The ornate metal work must be seen to believed. I am sure my pictures will not do it justice.

Angkor Wat is a Hindu-Buddhist temple complex in Cambodia. Located on a site measuring 162.6 hectares (1,626,000 m2; 402 acres) within the ancient Khmer capital city of Angkor, it is considered the largest religious structure in the world by Guinness World Records. Originally constructed in 1150 CE as a Hindu temple dedicated to the deity Vishnu, it was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the century.
Angkor Wat was built at the behest of the Khmer king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yaśodharapura (present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the temple-mountain and the later galleried temple. It is designed to represent Mount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology and is surrounded by a moat more than 5 km (3.1 mi). Enclosed within an outer wall 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) long are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the west with scholars divided as to the significance of this.
The temple complex fell into disuse before being restored in the 20th century with various international agencies involved in the project. The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs and devatas adorning its walls. The Angkor area was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. It is regarded as one of the best examples of Khmer architecture and a symbol of Cambodia, depicted as a part of the Cambodian national flag. The Angkor Wat is a major tourist attraction and attracts more than 2.5 million visitors every year.

Sunset shot of Wat Arun, Bangkok. Cloud cover meant it was the least spectacular sunset I had ever seen, but it did give the sky this interesting orange hue.

Angkor Wat, located in Cambodia, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its stunning architecture and historical significance. Built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II, Angkor Wat is considered the largest religious monument in the world and represents the pinnacle of Khmer architectural achievement. Its design is a fusion of Hindu cosmology and Khmer temple architecture, reflecting the cultural and religious influences of the time. Angkor Wat served as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu before later being transformed into a Buddhist temple. In 1992, Angkor Wat was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its outstanding universal value and its importance as a symbol of Cambodia's cultural heritage. Today, Angkor Wat remains a revered and iconic symbol of Khmer civilization and attracts millions of visitors from around the world each year.
The Wat Ban Den located North of the city is one of Chiang Mai’s most remarkable temples. It is also one of the largest temple complexes in Chiang Mai province. The complex contains a large number of structures including an ordination hall, a viharn, a meditation hall, the kuti or monks living quarters, a drum hall and several other buildings.
The temple complex holds 12 chedis or pagodas. According to ancient local belief when people die their spirit will stay in the chedi of their Zodiac animal sign. During their lifetime, everyone should make a pilgrimage to the temple of his Zodiac sign. Every Zodiac animal sign has an official temple in Thailand. Since some of these temples are far from Chiang Mai, abbot Kru Ba Tuang decided to build 12 pagodas in the Wat Ban Den, each one representing one of the Zodiac signs.
