Vulnerable - An infrequently encountered Brazilian endemic, the Striated Softtail can be found from southern Bahia south to Rio de Janeiro. Restricted-range species: present in Atlantic Forest Lowlands EBA. Population estimated at 2500–10,000 individuals; declining as a result of habitat destruction. Distribution within seemingly favourable habitat seems patchy. Evidently requires areas of dense vine tangles in tracts of tall forest, which have been almost eliminated in much of its range. Populations exist in several protected areas, including Boa Nova, Serra das Lontras, Alto Cariri and Descobrimento National Parks, Sooretama Biological Reserve, Serra Bonita Private Reserve, Una Biological Reserve and Desengano State Park. Considered Vulnerable at the national level in Brazil (1, 2). This one was photographed at Itacaré - Bahia.

"Alba" is a 6 year old female Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus). She was born (1/23/201) at the Salisbury Zoo in Maryland now lives at the San Diego Zoo. Alba and her mate "Turbo" are parents to a male cub, "Agapito" born 1/8/2020.
Also known as spectacled bears, Andean short-faced bears, or mountain bears, they are the only surviving species of bear native to South America and the only remaining member of the short-faced bear family. The rings of white or light fur around their eyes can extend down their chest and create unique and identifiable patterns for each bear. Their scientific name: Tremarctos ornatus, means decorated bear.

The African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), also known as the African savanna elephant, is the largest living terrestrial animal with bulls reaching a shoulder height of up to 4 m (13 ft). Both sexes have tusks, which erupt when they are 1–3 years old and grow throughout life.
It is distributed across 37 African countries and inhabits forests, grasslands and woodlands, wetlands and agricultural land. It is a social mammal, traveling in herds composed of cows and their offspring. Adult bulls usually live alone or in small bachelor groups. It is a herbivore, feeding on grasses, creepers, herbs, leaves and bark.
Since 2004, it has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. It is threatened foremost by habitat destruction, and in parts of its range also by poaching for meat and ivory.
They can weigh 7 t (7.7 short tons). The heaviest male on record weighed 10.4 t (11.5 short tons) and was shot in 1974 in Angola. Females are much smaller at about 2.2–2.6 m (7.2–8.5 ft) tall at the shoulder and up to 4 t (4.4 short tons) in weight. – Wikipedia
Very rare and very localized in the spiny forest, it was described for the first time in 1997.

The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five species in the genus Panthera, a member of the Felidae. The leopard occurs in a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because leopard populations are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation and are declining in large parts of the global range.
Contemporary records suggest that the leopard occurs in only 25% of its historical global range. Leopards are hunted illegally, and their body parts are smuggled in the wildlife trade for medicinal practices and decoration.
Compared to other wild cats, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, but generally has a smaller, lighter physique. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed, and do not usually have central spots as the jaguar's do. Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.
The leopard is distinguished by its well-camouflaged fur, opportunistic hunting behavior, broad diet, and strength (which it uses to move heavy carcasses into trees), as well as its ability to adapt to various habitats ranging from rainforest to steppe, including arid and montane areas, and its ability to run at speeds of up to 58 kilometres per hour (36 mph). – Wikipedia

The lion (Panthera leo) is a species in the cat family (Felidae). The lion is sexually dimorphic; males are larger than females with a typical weight range of 150 to 250 kg (331 to 551 lb) for the former and 120 to 182 kg (265 to 401 lb) for the latter. Male lions have a prominent mane, which is the most recognizable feature of the species.
A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females and cubs. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The species is an apex and keystone predator, although they scavenge when opportunities occur.
Typically, the lion inhabits grasslands and savannas but is absent in dense forests. It is usually more diurnal than other big cats, but when persecuted it adapts to being active at night and at twilight.
It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996 because populations in African countries have declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes for concern. – Wikipedia

The black lemur (Eulemur macaco) is a species of lemur from the family Lemuridae. Like all lemurs, it is endemic to Madagascar. Elevated to species status by Mittermeier et al. in 2008, Eulemur macaco, the black lemur, has brown or orange eyes, and ear tufts.
It lives in northwest Madagascar. The black lemur occurs in moist forests in the Sambirano region of Madagascar and on nearby islands.
The black lemur primarily eats fruit, which makes up an estimated 78% of its diet. The ripeness of this fruit is vital to the lemur's diet. Other foods eaten include flowers, leaves, fungi, some invertebrates and, especially during the dry season, nectar.
The black lemur lives in both primary and secondary forest. It is active both during the day and at night. It forages in both the upper and middle canopy, especially at night, and during the day it also forages in the understory. In degraded habitats, it also forages on the ground and may even eat soil. Lemur listed with the IUCN as vulnerable. – Wikipedia

A very special sighting while in Colombia was this Oncilla. I had never heard of it - - it is listed as vulnerable and we were very lucky to spend some time with this little guy.
He was about the size of a large house cat and had recently been in a bit of a mix-up based on his goopy eye and scratched up cheek.

Taken near Cold Lake, AB. Was my first time every photographing this species with any accuracy. I rarely see them so it was a thrill. There has been a 62% decline of this species.. 95% of the population breeds in Canada's vital Boreal Forest.Clear-cutting greatly impacts this vulnerable species.

And we dive into the deep end

I would tell you all my secrets

If the only other option's letting go
I'll stay vulnerable, yeah

Being officially classified as vulnerable, it is a real surprise to see a hooded plover anytime, but this was great to see a couple nesting down near Port MacDonnell in South Australia. I had parked the car and wandered a little closer on foot before I realised there was a nest. They naturally got quite agitated and jumpy, so not wanting to disturb them in any way I immediately backed right off, got back in the car and was surprisingly able to get much closer with the car without causing them any problems. They were happy as long as they didn't see anyone on foot. Fingers crossed they survive all the locals, cats, dogs and sightseers (like me) who travel along this little stretch of road. Thankfully it is on a quiet stretch of track that leads down to the beach well away from the town.

The most beautiful feature of the snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is also the major reason why it is a vulnerable species. That coat has to be (along with the majestic Tiger) one of the most beautiful of any creature. And look at its wonderful big tail here. Almost as long as the body itself.
Tomorrow I'll have some photos of the cats in action, and their speed and agility surprised me. Such wonderful animals, lethal in their natural environment, but endangered by just one other creature - the most destructive of any species to have ever inhabited this planet - homo sapiens.
But the snow leopard was also fortunate to have one of the truly great naturalist writers of the 20th century document its plight. In 1978 Peter Matthiessen (1927-2014) wrote "The Snow Leopard", an account of his two-month search for the snow leopard with naturalist George Schaller in the Dolpo region on the Tibetan Plateau in the Himalayas. It was a book that moved me greatly, as did his more recent work on rare Japanese cranes, "The Birds of Heaven: Travels with Cranes" (2001). In 2017 Peter's son Alex recreated his quest for the snow leopard: www.theguardian.com/books/2018/apr/04/zen-following-fathe...
