I rarely photograph eagles sitting on the ground. One big advantage of perching high up in a tree is that it gives them a position of strength to view possible prey as well as keep an eye open for enemies.
This one appears a bit vulnerable as he surveys the terrain around him and is hoping it is safe to walk over a few yards to some roadside kill by a busy road.
I learned how the aoudad, Yellow, received her name. Years ago, there were several aoudads at the zoo. This last survivor of the group is the one who had a yellow tag on her ear.
Now, we all know.

Mush was not really our dog, but he did live with us off and on for a while. We met while Chance was still a puppy and Mush's person at the time was my cabinmate. We shared a dry cabin, no phone, no electric and about a tenth of a mile off the one lane, pothole filled, dead end dirt road. Judy had rescued him from a remote town, Kotzebue, above the Arctic Circle. People often talk about rescuing dogs, but Mush and Judy’s story is unique and a very literal rescue.
Judy was living in “Kotz” doing, if I’m not mistaken, graduate work. I’m sure she had seen Mush before, but one day while he was harnessed and in team, she heard yelling; his owner pulled a gun and was about to shoot him dead. Evidently Mush was a fighter and was not receptive to being told what to do by this person. This method of training, shooting a dog in harness while his teammates look on was meant as a lesson to the other dogs that they better behave. Truly misguided and cruel – “training” through fear and intimidation. But things were different in the bush and some people could not afford to keep a dog that not only did not perform, but also harmed other dogs in the team.
Judy intervened, “don’t shoot that dog!” And the person reluctantly acquiesced, warned her about his behavior, and said, “get him the hell out of here.” (or something to that effect).
Judy returned to Fairbanks for University studies (where we met and became roommates), of course she loved that dog with all her heart, with all her being, and he no doubt loved her as well, realizing maybe not that she saved his life, but that she got him away from a bad person.
It was said that Mush was ½ wolf. I usually take such claims with a grain of salt, but with Mush I believed it. Huskies can be very aloof, and arguably most or all of them can be traced to some wolf heritage, but Mush was the most aloof dog that I have ever experienced. Also, he did not like men, any wonder. But he tolerated me and eventually we became as close as he would allow. Later Lenore came around and she fell for him and he preferred to live with her in her little cabin. He provided her security and comfort. But I jumped ahead a bit.
Judy and Mush moved in when Chance was still a young pup, he was not aggressive with the rambunctious puppy, but as a matter of training and demonstrating who was boss, he would sit with seemingly all his weight (he was big) on Chance the pup. Chance learned. In his time with me Mush was a strong freight dog, helping haul firewood locally and supplies out to my remote cabin site. I even named a stretch of trail after him, “Mush’s Misery,” as it was a long uphill slog and he would put his head down, lean into his harness and march ahead without complaint.
Later Mush disappeared and some weeks or months later I was surprised to see him at a friends cabin. This was not near where Lenore or I had lived. The friend was surprised that I knew him, as surprised as I was to find him living with her. She said he just appeared on her porch one day and stayed, as if he lived there. She was involved in a separation and felt alone and vulnerable too in that place. She was convinced that Mush sensed this, and intentionally appeared to protect her and provide comfort. They had not met before. I didn’t really feel like it was my choice, so he stayed. Eventually he disappeared from her too, and that’s all we know.
a (color) outtake of a series of black and white self portraits I'm taking for the cooper union hometest, that's entitled "descent into madness"

There are a lot of things you won't have any power over in life, many things will happen, and lots of it might make you feel completely lost and vulnerable, kind of like sailing along all alone on a raft through eternity, having to defend yourself against unknown and perhaps known enemies. Just keep in mind... you might feel like you're all alone, but you will always have someone. Even if it is just a tiny goat, it's still someone. And clean feet, nice tea, and a cake... these things will always make any day brighter. Just saying..
This picture is HUGE btw. You can click it twice to zoom in since I have a Pro account. If it looks blurry, just wait and let it load. :)

A recently fledged Blackbird Chick - wondering who I am. Snapped with my mobile phone.
The Blackbird - Turdus merula, is one of the most prolific of uk birds as it has adapted to live happily in woodland and house gardens. The female is the sole nest builder which takes about 11-14 days to make and will incubate the eggs but the cock bird will help feed his offspring. The pair will produce 2-3 broods a year and the youngsters fledge after 13-14 days. The song of the blackbird is delightful and will sing for hours.
Tribute to the innocent victims of terrorist bombings in Sri Lanka. What has happened to the world we know? Not only are we poisoning the environment , we are also poisoning the minds of vulnerable people in the name of religion ! Truly a very sad day for humankind.

I like the idea of Okarito using their old boat house and pier for their information center. Improvements on the interior needs work, but one would expect that the contents are sparse due to the center being open 24 hours. One would also guess that this might leave the center vulnerable to theft.
Following excursions into the Balkans and Al Dabir, the United States Army decided that many of its logistics vehicles were vulnerable to small arms fire and artillery splinters. In order to keep roadborne supply lines stable closer to hostile territory, the Army began buying and installing armored cabs on its Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles. The two-axled M1078A2 Light Medium Tactical Vehicle (with added Material Handling Equipment) seen here is one such example. The additional ballistic protection enables crews to sustain hits from LMGs with impunity and offers moderate protection against small explosive charges. These enhancements have saved numerous lives as ambushes in rugged deployment zones have become increasingly common.
Much love to Evan for letting me jack his LMTV. Everything but the cab and crane are his doing, so kudos to him.
I am confused about what to title this photo because it is also about opening up spaces and accepting differences. Suggestions are welcome!

Month 5/12
So me and my friend Alex started our own little project together. Every month, we're going to pick a concept. Every month, we are going to use up a roll (or two) of film on that concept. This month was vulnerability.
Replaced (again) because you like this one more.

One of many fruit bats hanging from trees ready to take off into the air. I was not in a good position to see any of the bats' faces, and I only photographed one decent shot of a bat flying. This can be seen in the first comment section.
Wikipedia-
The Madagascan fruit bat (Eidolon dupreanum) is a species of bat in the family Pteropodidae. It is endemic to Madagascar and is listed as "Vulnerable" by the IUCN because it is hunted as bushmeat.
The Madagascan fruit bat is found both around the coastal plain and in the inland high plateau. It has not been recorded in some areas but that is likely to be because it has not been observed rather than that it is absent from these areas.
It requires suitable rock fissures and caves in which to roost during the day. Colony size varies between about ten and five hundred individuals.
Examination of the droppings from the Madagascan fruit bat show that it mainly consumes fruit but also feeds on the flowers of Eucalyptus spp.
In its Red List of Threatened Species, the IUCN has classified this bat as "Vulnerable". Its numbers appear to be declining and the greatest threat it faces is being hunted for bushmeat. Under Madagascar law,
Some colonies have been completely wiped out, but in some instances, these sites have been recolonised a few years later. The bat is present in a number of protected areas where it should receive protection. It is an adaptable species in that, if its main food sources are lost, it is able to change to other sources although it seems to prefer the fruit of native trees to those of introduced species.
In Africa, the Cheetahs population is struggling and listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. Human encroachment continues to shrink and fragment their native habitat. During my time in Ndutu I was encouraged that we found several thriving families. These sleek and beautiful cats stole my heart and quickly became favorites. We found this young cub just before sunset one evening. In the first year of life, cheetah mortality is high and this tough guy was the sole survivor from what was likely a litter of three or four. Due to this little one's cautious nature, I have am hopeful that he survived.
A very young, about 8 week old Otter cub having its first trip down to the beach away from the sanctity of its holt - the mother would have hidden them in this rocky cave on the shore line for safety although there are no known predators on the Islands.

There's more to this story than just two lions mating as Mr Lion is one of the three 'Sala's Males' who had just taken over the pride - or what is currently left of the pride - and Mrs Lion is trying to protect her newborn litter. A lioness who has recently given birth would not normally be receptive to a male, but when faced with the very likely potential threat of having her cubs killed by a new pride lion, she may use her female charms to confuse him. And that's exactly what she was doing when we found them.
This is the Rekero Pride, a pride that has gone through some difficult times over the past couple of years and a pride that has now split. This lioness and her sister both have cubs. Her sister's were born a few months ago and from what we could see had been accepted by the new males. However, this lioness still had her newborns hidden in the den, so mating with the new males so early on in their relationship may confuse them into thinking they are theirs. When one male mates, his coalition partners generally don't come near. If the lioness then mates with another male, the situation gets more complicated and the males get more confused!
The female of the species is clever.
As a point of interest, the cubs in this pride - the three older ones and the newborns - would have been sired by one of the famous Four Musketeer coalition as the Rekero Pride was in their control prior to these new, much younger, males arriving on the scene.
CSX U072, operating with the local crew out of NMJ, storms west past the vulnerable Lincoln Depot approximately 13 miles after departing Mattawamkeag. Leading the charge is CSX 9025, which is rumored to be the last operating Dash 9 on the entire CSX system. Ironically enough, this is the first CSX widecab to reach the far east end since the CSX takeover, doubtful it will be the last but it sure is interesting to see up here. Second in line is the equally as unique CSX 9280, the only ex. Pan Am unit painted into CSX colors. Trailing are 40 cars from interchange with Eastern Maine Railway.
