A view down the lower lawn.

When we paid a visit to Chirk Castle in April, I took along a new (to me) 35mm film SLR, a Canon EOS 50E, which I used alongside my normal digital camera. Unfortunately, as it was the first film I had run through the camera, I hadn't got the settings to my liking and all of the photos were overexposed, to one degree or another (see below), so I decided to photograph one of the negatives and process it using VueScan. The above image is the result of this after a quick "tweek" in PS. See the "untouched" version from VueScan below.

Having a heatwave, a tropical heatwave as the Irving Berlin song goes. It's highly unusual for Seattle in May to be in the 80s with glorious sunshine and not a cloud in the sky. I tell people that Al Gore was right all along, and this is all to do with global warming and it is going to come with a major earthquake.

But Seattleites, who are still overdosing on Vitamin D, and more accustomed to having grey skies and rain, are wondering what that big yellow thing in the now bright blue sky is - and why they have had so many continuous days of it. And some, like in this picture, just merrily dress up for the usual Seattle elements expecting a downpour.

My first successful Nikon Coolscan V ED scan using Vuescan

While I did a decent scan of this earlier on my Epson, it needed more tweaking and I ended up with an image that has significant post processing. I still like the results, but wanted to get back to less manipulation and more straight shooting, as it were.

Since I got my half plate camera and Fujinar 210mm f/4.5 lens (flic.kr/p/22En6zv), I've been taking photographs on photo paper because the original film size (4 3/4 x 6 1/2 inch or 120 x 165 mm) is no longer available. Then a few days ago I took delivery of some Fomapan 400 5 x 7 inch (127 x 178 mm) film which I cut down to half plate size. This shot was taken at EI 320 and exposed at f/45 for 4 seconds. The negatives were processed taco style in a Paterson 3 tank and developed in Adox Rodinal (1+50) @ 20C for 11 minutes. Post processing was done by scanning the image to a raw file in Vuescan @ 1,200 dpi and then inverting and scaling it in Photoshop. Finally, the image was sharpened for the screen and a vignette was added in Lightroom.

I must say that I was blown away by the level of detail in the shot, especially considering it was taken using an uncoated barrel lens that must be about 70 years old.

Very odd picture. Looks like something weird happened with the emulsion after 30+ years. No other pic on the roll has anything remotely like this.

Film might not be dead, but i believe this roll was dying. ;) or maybe something went wrong with scanning? weird stuff.
