Over in the Nordic republic of Ballard, you can find there one of the most distinctive personalities of any Seattle neighborhood - and that personality is firmly down to its Nordic fishing roots. Over there, they tend to call cars "Fjords" and you can’t go a couple of blocks without seeing a Nordic name: Swedish Club, Sons of Norway, Swedish Hospital, Danish flags, Viking Sport Seattle Cycling Team, etc.

The community also celebrates Norwegian Constitution Day, and it is the home of the only Nordic Heritage Museum in all of the USA. And then there's the tree-and bench-lined Bergen Place Park, located in a triangle of land in the heart of the community, that honors the 1967 twinning relationship between the people of Seattle and the people of Bergen, Norway.

Shilshole Bay Marina even has a giant bronze statue of Norse explorer Leif Erikson, who is believed to have landed in America about 500 years before Columbus.

It was no wonder then that, recently, at the always fantastic and not-to-be-missed Ballard Seafood Festival (www.seafoodfest.org), this Nordic heritage really comes to the fore, with not only the food ("Anyone for more pickled herring?") on offer, but also a signpost telling you the distance and direction to where families in the community originated from.

This was with my plain old Nikon F50!

Film workflow: this one's pretty much straight from the scanner via Vuescan and then Photoshop. 5400dpi, any dust or blemishes fixed with spot healing tool (minimal); then re-sized to 300dpi and 1024w, and a dash of smart sharpen. presto - film to PC!

A view down the lower lawn.

When we paid a visit to Chirk Castle in April, I took along a new (to me) 35mm film SLR, a Canon EOS 50E, which I used alongside my normal digital camera. Unfortunately, as it was the first film I had run through the camera, I hadn't got the settings to my liking and all of the photos were overexposed, to one degree or another (see below), so I decided to photograph one of the negatives and process it using VueScan. The above image is the result of this after a quick "tweek" in PS. See the "untouched" version from VueScan below.

Best viewed on black (click on image or press "L").

More examples of this shot and a comparison shot taken with my Nikon D90 can be seen below.
