I have just discovered VueScan – software that helps one’s scanner to produce good results from photos.
Using my Epson Perfection V500, I have never had any problems in uploading slides to the computer, but copying colour prints has been a different matter (as is well known), partly because of the orange cast that tends to permeate colour negatives. Fortunately, VueScan automatically removes the cast, and reproduces the colour balance of the colour prints. To get quite acceptable results, all you need do is to use VueScan, which walks you through the process, and then tweak things to your liking in your image manipulation software.
Here are two “curiosities” – copies of colour prints (almost certainly taken on Kodak Gold 200 ASA) dating from a visit to Trieste that we made in the early 1990s (I guess).
The first shows an array of empty wine flagons on a cart, a scene that I stumbled across in the backyard of a rural restaurant in Friuli, when I went looking for their outside loo. A grainy image, certainly, but an interesting one, perhaps.
Both this photo and the next one were taken using a Canon Sure Shot XL Zoom 35mm film camera, with a built-in high quality 39 – 85 mm zoom lens, given to me as a present by Maryam around 1990. I used it until 2005, when I bought my first digital camera, and found it highly tolerant of rough treatment and thoroughly reliable, and capable of surprisingly good results. The model is nowadays something of a collectors’ item, and is not easy to find on auction sites such as e-Bay.

Anyone familiar with using Vuescan? I've switched to scanning my negatives on my Mac and the software I'm using is more complex than what I used on my PC--and a lot less straightforward.
This is regular color film that I x-pro'd in slide film chemicals (at home). I shot it in my pinhole, and the negatives came out really dark.
I'm having trouble getting the colors of the scan to match the colors of the actual film. Vuescan saves two versions of the image--the one I've color-adjusted in Vuescan (see it here), and also a raw tiff file (which is what this one is). Neither really match the negative. I'm OK with that, I think they're both cool images, I'm just not sure what I'm doing with this software! A little bit frustrating.
On Friday, May 2nd 2014 the Impossible Project had it's Open-Day in the Factory in Enschede. My brother and i decided to attend.
Trainride from Hamburg was a bit long and only getting in for the 10am Tour meant i had to get up at around 2am :)
It was quite amazing to see where those films in my fridge come from and what is involved in making them. Seeing the drums of developerpaste kept reminding me of the Roger Rabbit movie ;)
Shot a roll of film while on the tour. Well... i think there are a few Kodak BW400cn pics in the Olympus AF Mini but that's not ready yet to develop.
Anyway... I hope you enjoy the pics although they are not that great and my chems where really on their last run.

Almost twenty percent of Americans have no means whatsoever of paying for healthcare. For that population here in Seattle, there are few places to go when they are sick, and only one place they can go for advanced medical care - and that's the "ghetto" hospital of Harborview Medical Centre.
The folks that work in the ER may not treat you like your regular doc does, but they really have only one mission... to keep you alive, and there, like most other hospitals around Seattle, they don't first check your insurance status. If you are ever in a traumatic accident, the Emergency Services protocols in King County automatically send you to Harborview. Nowhere else. These folks have seen it all and do it better than anyone else.
My hat is off to the folks that work in the ER at HMC. It's a thankless job and they do it non-stop 24/7, 365 days a year.

More unseen borders forming in Westlake Park, as Seattleites mingle with the 26 (now down to 24 due to summer casualties) androgynous human figures as they mix art into their daily life through a major summer art exhibit entitled “Borders”, by the Icelandic sculptor Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir. Meanwhile, for those that might feel intimidated by the life-sized one’s, at the Nordic Heritage Museum across town in Ballard, there’s also an exhibit by the same artist using their smaller counterparts she used as models for the real thing.

There has been a tangible lack of free music and arts shows in the heart of downtown Seattle since the historic Summer Nights at the Pier concert series was shut down a few years back. Who could forget those sultry summery concerts that unfolded against a backdrop of glistening water and setting sun since 1991? Some of my more memorable nights at Pier 62 & 63, included performers that have ranged from sexy soul singer Macy Gray to quirky Scottish rocker David Byrne, and not forgetting the timeless and über-talented Carole King of Tapestry fame.
But thanks to that wonderful, cover-all invention of "Health and Safety", gone are those marvelous summer concert nights on the pier, to be replaced by - wait for it - a dozen cheap, randomly placed plastic chairs that are screwed to the pier and a ping pong table emblazoned with "Waterfront Seattle" with a selection of burst ping pong balls you can't even use. And they call this entertainment……

Don't be fooled by the pom-poms and all those skimpy outfits: It's now official that Cheerleading has become the 'most dangerous sport for US women', according to a new report published recently in the Journal of Pediatrics.
With the choreography and acrobatic routines becoming more and more elaborate, researchers found that the number of visits to the ER resulting from high school and college cheerleading injuries rose from 4,954 in 1980 to 26,786 in 2007; and that the sport accounted for 66 per cent of "catastrophic" injuries -- those resulting in permanent brain and spinal disabilities or medical conditions -- to girls.
This picture shows the visiting Boise State cheerleaders doing their routine recently at the all-concrete Westlake Park in downtown Seattle…but they soon came crashing down to earth with an almighty bang, as the Huskies routed them, 38-6, in the season-opening first game to be played at renovated Husky Stadium.

After opening as a screening room in 1924, the long-time Denny Regrade bar has morphed over the decades from speakeasy to porn theater to its present makeover incarnation as the popular retro Rendezvous Restaurant, located in the heart of Belltown.
The atmosphere is sort of 1920's, with high booths, red walls, dark, swanky, sultry with good food and a plentiful supply of spirits -- both the alcoholic and paranormal variety. Ghost trackers have concluded that the spirit of a man haunts the basement (which may account for the mysterious thudding sounds and bizarre flashes of light), while the spirit of a woman haunts the upper level (where menus have spontaneously propelled themselves across tables).
Then again, legend has it these spirits only show themselves to those that have overly indulged in the spirits! But certainly from its spooky Belltown back-alley appearance, Rendezvous has an eerie feel to it -- and one not to be walked down during the upcoming Halloween period.
