The US Capitol building, reflected in the ice of the frozen solid Capitol Reflecting Pool. This unusual situation brought to you by the extraordinary cold blast that came when the Arctic Vortex dipped way down into the eastern United States earlier this month. Temperatures were in the single digits Fahrenheit for several days, with some places in the US South even dropping down as low as 0º F (-18º C), with wind chills in the -20º F (-29º C) range. The gulls seemed to be just as confused as everyone else.

Just playing around with Photoshop, this end image was achieved by layering 28 different images and textures. Weird looking I know but the focus was to end up with an image that has a sense of depth and rotation that would draw your attention into the centre of the image. I couldn't resist throwing is a little lightening : )
Taken the same day as the previous photo. Looks like there is a general counterclockwise rotation in the area of the dark cloud. Not a tornado but interesting how this occurs in the northern hemisphere and opposite in the southern.
'Spiraling down, the void is pulling me
Twisting me
Willingly, I'll abandon all I knew
Circling
When I'm finally down the drain, I will see it differently
Sadly that's the best I can do'

This was taken late last year when I was at Little Yosemite in one evening. I had this waterfalls all to myself as it was getting late. I was the last one out of the park. It got pretty spooky too when critters started to make noise all over the place.

You're looking down the barrel of a 105mm field gun. More or less SOOC apart from crop and a slight levels tweak. I loved the effect of the rifling as it faded into the bokeh. The colours are the result of people walking by the other end of the barrel.
Following on from Mike's post Nine Ladies And A Black Santa this is the creator of a new board game entitled "Vortex Chess"
He was shooting a video for the start of crowdfunding camapign on Kickstarter to fund a King Arthur's Vortex Chess board game set in Arthurian's universe where Merlin Ambrosius have to defend Camelot and Excalibur against Medraut ap Lot and his barbaric army.
Totally random!

Thumbnails from low resolution 30 fps video of a smoke filled vortex in air. Note the shedding of outer ring vortex layers that remain in place as the ball emerges from the cannon. The effect is the formation a horizontal mushroom cloud. The linear vortex velocity reduces until it reaches the plate and expands. The sequence is from work done with a student. The impulse at the plate on impact was measured with four force probes and used with the velocity to estimate the mass of the vortex.
