On August, 3`rd 2022 a volcanic outburst startet near Icelands mountain Fagradalsfjall, 40 km south of Reykjavik. Approachig the scene, a trail of dirty smoke blown to the Atlantic indicated the event and its location.

Looking north from Goatfell, a volcano 60 million years ago. Isle of Arran, Scotland.

We were able to find a spot to get out along the amazing volcanic rocks that make up a huge area near Cedar Breaks National Monument. The rocks are huge and very sharp. Captured here in the late day light and CPL filter. These rocks cover several hundred square miles. By dating the trees that have grown back in the area, the latest flow occurred in the past 900 years.

According to the Bureau of Land Management Bishop field office, the Volcanic Tablelands is a vast volcanic landscape that was formed over 700,000 years ago by materials spewing from the Long Valley caldera. The 3,000 ft thick rock is called Bishop Tuff. The cloud covered mountains in the background are the White Mountains.

Hope everyone has a great week! Thanks for stopping by and for all of your kind comments.

Stacks of volcanic flows make up the mountains along the southeastern Mosfellsdalur (Mosfell Valley) in Iceland. Notice the cliffs in the lower third of the photo that are make up of columnar basalt. These hexagonal columns are bounded by cracks or joints that form during the cooling of a thick basalt flow. Geologist refer to them as cooling joints or columnar joints. Though common in basalt, columnar jointing may occur in many types of volcanic flows as they cool and contract.

A wider view of one of the impressive geological formations that is Smith Rock. Image taken from the top of the larger formation. The two are connected by a small ridge, hence one rock, even though each stands out individually.

Images of the bigger rock in comments.

"The geology of Smith Rocks is volcanic. It is made up of layers of recent basalt flows overlaying older Clarno ash and tuff formations. Approximately 30 million years ago, a large caldera was formed when overlying rock collapsed into an underground lava chamber. This created a huge amount of rock and ash debris that filled the caldera. That material solidified into rock, becoming Smith Rock tuff. A half million years ago, basalt lava flows from nearby volcanoes covered the older tuff.

More recently, the Crooked River cut its way through the layers of rock to create today's geographic features. Smith Rock itself is a 3,200-foot (980 m)-high ridge (above sea level) with a sheer cliff-face overlooking a bend in the Crooked River (elev. 2600 ft), making the cliffs about 600 feet high."

Happy Sliders Sunday!

The sunset horizon from the Homer Spit in Kachemak Bay is dotted with active volcanoes (all quiet now) and this sunset seems to evoke the power of volcanoes.

10,000 ft Mt Iliamna volcano is a dot on the horizon. Iliamna hasn't erupted in more than a century, though there are large active fumaroles constantly emitting vigorous ejections of steam and sulfuric gases.

It is ranked as a high-threat volcano by the US Geological Survey, 20th most hazardous volcano in the United States. Probably many of the 19 others ranked higher are quite near, on the Alaska Peninsula and Aleutian Chain, far north part of the Pacific 'Ring of Fire'.

Vestrahorn ("west horn") rises to a height of 454 meters (1,490 feet) above sea level. The mountain is situated on the Stokksnes Peninsula, facing the Atlantic Ocean on its southern side. The mountain is noted for its two distinctive peaks, which create a jagged, tooth-like silhouette against the sky. Unlike most mountains in Iceland, Vestrahorn is composed primarily of gabbro, a dark, greenish-colored volcanic rock.

We were patiently waiting for the sun to set and for the clouds to light up. That didn't really happen on Baker, but this earlier shot before sunset caught a wonderful glow on the ancient volcano. Happy Sunday.. Kris..

Playa del Verodal is a place full of beauty and danger. Swimming and walking on the beach are both forbidden. So enjoy the view and mood of this place. Image taken in the late morning hour in October 2016.

This closes out my Smith Rock series. Thanks for hiking along!

This would have been a scene from Hell in 1730 and for 6 more long years. Multiple volcanoes erupted some 2 cubic kilometres of lava.

A parish priest of the time wrote of destruction of villages, terrifying earthquakes, mountains rising up overnight, explosions and raining hot ash. West coast of Lanzarote, Spanish Canary Islands.

The Reykjanes peninsula is a region particularly rich in geothermal phenomena due to the high level of volcanic activity. The mid-Atlantic ridge rises to the surface in the Krysuvik region, and there are numerous lava fields, fissures, solfataras, mud pots and other hot springs. This volcanic activity can be seen in particular at the Seltún site.
