Bartolomé Island is named after Sir Bartholomew James Sulivan, an English naval lieutenant who participated in Darwin's voyage on the Beagle. The island is located to the east of Santiago Island. The eastern part of the island consists of volcanic cones, while the western part is a peninsula with several rock formations, including Pinnacle Rock, a steep volcanic rock.

OLYMPUS
Old lava fields cover the area towards the southern end of Lanzarote, where the sea meets Timanfaya Park. The sun was sinking behind me, under a bank of clouds and offering some great light.

There are plenty of volcanoes that are part of the Fuji Volcanic Belt that continues southward to Mt. Fuji, Izu Peninsula, Izu Islands, and the Marianas.
Volcanos that form the skyline include Yakeyama (焼山 2,400 m) that is still active, Myoukou-san (妙高山 2,453 m) with a distinct lava dome, and Iizuna-yama (飯縄山 1,917 m) that is believed to be the abode of Tengu spectre whose Tokyo residence is Mt. Takao-san. Iwasuge-yama (岩菅山 2,295 m) and Yokote-yama (横手山 2,307m) are volcanoes that constitute parts of the Shiga-kougen (志賀高原) Ski Gelände, which is the major rival of Happoone. Shirane-san (白根山) is another active volcano that is currently off-limit for visitors.
A group of non-volcanic peaks near the centre are the Togakushi Mountains (戸隠連山 2,160 m) that is a sacred place for Shugendou ascetics.
More volcanic formations in the Volcanic Tablelands south of Mono Lake. There is much to explore in this area -- hope to go back in October.
Happy Tuesday! Thanks for stopping by and for all of your kind comments.

This was taken on a trip to Lanzarote a while back. Timanfaya National Park is a spectacular place although not easy to photograph. The Spanish Government only allows authorised coaches into the park and nobody is allowed to alight from the vehicle meaning that all photos must be taken through a window. This presents a number of obvious difficulties although I still managed to get some reasonable shots.
The Racetrack Playa — a barren lakebed in Death Valley National Park — is home to one of the world’s natural wonders: “sailing stones” that mysteriously meander across the dried mud, leaving tracks in their wake. Since the 1940s, these rocks have fueled wonder and speculation because no one had seen them in action — until now.
Recently, a team of U.S. scientists recorded the first observation of these boulders in motion, using GPS monitors and time-lapse photography. By meticulously tracking weather data, scientists also explained how these rocks slog across the playa. What was one of the world’s natural wonders now appears to be the perfect combination of rain, wind, ice and sun.
After leaving Valley of Fire, Wayne and I headed to Death Valley for some night photography out on the Playa and when we arrived there it was 114 degrees. We still had a long 3 hr dirt road drive ahead of us and we also wanted to stop off at Ubehebe Crater for a couple of photos. Most of my time here was spent traveling to the Racetrack Playa so I didn't get any time to shoot photography during the day, but what a blast it was to shoot on a dry lake bed under the stars at night. We spent about an hour looking for the famous Sailing Stones when we came across a couple other photographers that were on their way out and pointed us in the right direction. I can't wait to get back here, preferably during sub triple digit temps. :)

The Canary Islands have a volcanic past. Everywhere where the lava masses met the ocean, beautiful little bays were created away from the rough Atlantic Ocean.

Happy weekend to all, greetings from Kuata island, Fiji.
The lava formation seemed to be a head of lava to me as I always see a face when looking at this image. Lanzarote in April 2022.

Lava rock and many other types of historic volcanic rocks, forms and features are everywhere here. Fascinating.
Have a fabulous Friday and a wonderful weekend!
So this is one of the icelandic volcanic sunset we had last night, and very nice it was too... There's a couple more over on FS Photography should anyone be interested... :)

An image taken near Rotorua at the Hell's Gate geothermal area. I was quite fascinated by the bright orange hue the trees had taken on in here - evidently to do with the volcanic and geothermal mineral rich ground and air acting like a super fertiliser.
