Cell migration is a normal physiological process that is required for development and wound healing, but also occurs in disease for example cancer. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms behind cell migration is essential.
To try and determine these mechanisms I study immune cells in fruit fly embryos, as during development these cells undergo stereotyped migrations to distribute throughout the embryo.
This means that I can overexpress and inactivate proteins within the immune cell and determine how they affect migration
I can identify how the proteins affect cell migration by fixing the embryos and staining the immune cells and the central nervous system (CNS) and then visualising the embryos using a microscope.
By staining the CNS, I can determine the stage of development of the embryo and identify whether the immune cells are in the correct location at this time point. This enables me to determine whether the proteins affect cell migration.
Here the immune cells were stained green and the CNS red; however, I have false coloured the CNS purple as 7% of the male population is red/green colour blind and would not be able to distinguish between the immune cells and CNS.

North East England Film and TV
c.10,000 nodes representing people, organisations and productions tagged with a filming location in North East England in the IMDB, over the last 40 years. Clouds of nodes represent films and TV shows of various types.
Note - there are many caveats with the data. The Next few months will be filtering it, and producing iterations to create a more accurate picture of the region's film and TV sectors.

Sharina Shahrin - track: This is not an Outro
"Centralising around the theme of 'space and time,' I was inspired by the ominous sound of the audio to create a dark, abstract cityscape that captured the sense of movement and juxtaposition between the delicate and raw qualities of the track."
view from outside reader - the graphic was replicated from the plinth inside but does not quite work here - the vinyl was removed a few hours later... IMG_9043
Trying a different colour approach than previous renderings. I think the others make for a more dramatic picture but this makes it easier to appreciate the data it's representing. It also looks much better in smaller sizes.
Attempt at capturing this learning assemblage.

One of my biggest challenges as a graphic recorder was to understand and visualize this conference on black holes given by scientists.
The day ended with a fascinating session on how #dataviz helps us to better “see” black holes. Big thanks to Barthélémy von Haller and Jeremi Niedziela from CERN and Oliver James from DNEG (with me on the photo). They guided us through this wonderful journey from the smallest elements of quantum physics to the black holes and their representation in the Interstellar movie. Magnificent presentation that shows that synergies between science and art can increase our knowledge about the unknown.

*VISUALISATION OF UNIVERSAL SOUND, Meta_Signal Sonar System*
RECEPTILIUM is a Hi-Tech audio-visual interactive project and performance act in which the human body and emotions are used as a communication medium, or a musical instrument that produces audio content – music when performing an analogue visual artwork, drawing visualisation of universal sound. Visitors have the opportunity to experience and attend to the creation of a visual artwork while listening to audio content as a result of the creation process. During the production of an analogue visual artwork, brain waves followed by EEG and physical motion data from hands are transmitted and converted into sounds that together form an ambient audio record connected to real-time generative visual projected on the wall. The purpose of this act is, to present the oldest language of our existence – the blueprint of the stardust; to seduce the audience with meditative movements and sounds that poetically reflects the surface of the Moon.
First demo version of the performance RECEPTILIUM lasted 4 hours at Sounded Bodies Festival on 12th October 2018. The presentation concept is in development and will be setup differently for upcoming events.
